After Criticism, Sega Says It's "Working On" Its Classic Game Re-Releases

"We want to see them done right, and we're going to keep working until they are."

Last week Sega launched its Sega Forever service, which brings back classic games from its Master System, Genesis/Mega Drive, Game Gear, Saturn, and Dreamcast consoles and repurposes them as free-to-play mobile titles. The launch lineup incorporated Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II--with new titles to be added every fortnight--but initial fan reception has been mixed. Some players have complained of dropped frames, poor audio mixing, and fiddly controls.

Now, Sega has defended the service's launch, at the same time as reassuring fans that it is working on improving the quality of both the lineup and each game's port.

Now Playing: SEGA Forever - Official Launch Trailer

"We've got lots of things planned as we go through, and we're going to keep on working on that quality," Sega Networks' chief marketing officer, Mike Evans, told Eurogamer. "For the vast majority of our fans it's solid, but the specialist guys who are looking for the absolute epitome of quality, we're going to keep improving for those guys."

"The launch itself has been really positive--if you look at the vast majority of feedback it's been strong, if you look at ratings on the App Store from consumers there's definitely some very good sentiment as well. Is there room for improvement like anything? Yeah there is."

Evans went on to say that Sega has "some really good updates coming out soon which will address some of the challenges of the d-pad, some of the [graphics] shading as well that we're looking at how to improve."

Currently, Sega Forever is only available on Android and iOS, but Evans hinted that an expansion to other platforms may come further down the line. He stated that developing these re-releases in the Unity game engine "opens up other commercial opportunities for us with Apple TVs, desktops and the Switch as well."

Lastly, regarding criticism of the games lineup at launch, Evans said the company started with Genesis games as it's the "most successful platform" and "a good place to introduce the mainstream audience," but that more platform favorites would be coming soon. "I'm actively looking at Segagaga as a title which will be a great thing, there are other titles I'd love to see, like Panzer Dragoon," he said. "They're the things that take a bit more time, but what we've got to do is get the quality right as well, and that's important."

If they'd put a translated Segagaga onto you know current consoles and sell it for $10-20 they'd you know make more money than putting it for free (with ads) on a phone....just saying. Also Skies of Arcadia HD please.

Oh wow what a sarcastic ****. "Specialist guys" my ass! It's just the majority of the mobile crowd are casual players so they don't know what quality is supposed to be or how the games are supposed to run.

I rather play the games elsewhere, thanks.

While it would almost certainly be an extremely poor business decision, if not an outright impossibility, I can't help but wish Sega would follow Nintendo's example and start releasing Sega systems in "Classic" form. I'd absolutely buy the Genesis and Dreamcast versions, and since I never had a Saturn I'd probably be curious enough to pick it up as well.

These games have already been out for a while, I can't see that big of a market still wanting to play them. And maybe instead of turning out apps as quickly as possible, They should make sure they run properly first :) Sega needs to go away for a while. They haven't done anything but re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-release Sonic games.

So there's been free emulators around for decades, running these games perfectly on hardware from decades ago, and Sega still manages to mess it up. Impressive.

I mean, they're free, but mobile touchscreens will never work for games that were designed for a controller.

So Sega is still trying to hang onto a goodish game from the 90s which they haven't really given any us a reason they can do anything good with sonic since the original. All I can say is Sega please just give up and move on.

the only real bad thing on it is the always on line stupid decision . why the hell i need to be always on-line to play sonic? yes you can trick us with the cloud save but come on i dont mind to play like the old times without save so just simply let me play off-line and hte ones that are online get the save done problem soled

Sega's such a strange company. It's like they don't have any standards or quality control what so ever. They've let AtGames **** up their plug-and-play systems for years, Sonic Boom happened, they can't get emulation right on hardware that eclipses the 25+ year old original... and nobody seems to be able to take a step back, look at the product before release and say "You know what? Maybe this isn't ready yet. Maybe there's more work to be done before we put this out."

Well, if you plan on putting this stuff on anywhere other than the total casual smartphone market you'd better get that quality up to scratch for people who do actually know the difference between just slapping games on there and actually giving them something that's near enough as good as the original experience in all the ways that actually matter.

If they finally get around to releasing Segagaga in the West, or porting the panzer dragoon series, I will be extremely happy. If its only available for phones, I will be extremely not happy.

I was hesitant at first with SEGA putting these out on mobile before consoles/PC, but it does make sense why they went with this route, starting out. It'll be so freakin' cool to maybe see some SEGA CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast games one day; it may take a year or more, but we'll get there :)

I was looking at getting Phantasy Star II but the reviews are very bad. It looks like people already owned a version of the game, which Sega then "updated" for their Forever service. This caused people to lose save files, and there are some who claimed they were required to pay for the game again to get rid of the new ads.

@Xanthus179: It's terrible just like the other unity-emulated sega games. Tons of cut frames and terrible audio mixing. Avoid it.

@Xanthus179: I think that is a current bug going on. If you previously owned the game before SEGA Forever launched, you can simply restore purchases and the ads will be removed, but like I said.... I think it's a bug, which will get fixed soon, if not already.
