After Announcing Delay, No Man's Sky Dev Gets Death Threats

"I have received loads of death threats," Sean Murray says.

This week, Hello Games announced that its ambitious space-game No Man's Sky has been delayed from June to August--and not everyone was happy.

Designer Sean Murray said on Twitter that he's faced death threats in wake of the news. Here's what he had to say on the subject (via Polygon).

Kotaku broke the news of No Man's Sky's delay. The author of the story also reports he's received threats.

Previously, No Man's Sky was pegged to debut on June 21, but Hello Games confirmed on Friday that it's now coming in August. Specifically, it'll be out on August 9 in North America, followed by August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK.

"We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we're prepared to make the tough choices to get it right," Murray explained about the delay.

"The universe of No Man's Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn't been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation," he added.

In April, Murray talked about why No Man's Sky was almost canceled and shared a story about snubbing Kanye West (sort of).

Death threats are over the line, but mark my words, this will be one of the most over-hyped biggest disappointments in gaming.

@dryvlyne: I'm seeing the future of gaming after that game, imagine having other types of games in that kind of scale, like take Dragon Ball franchise, or super hero franchise as whole, or maybe even a proper Spore game.

Imagine starting as nothing, a nobody, and then rising to planet busting capable super hero or villain.

Maybe an evolution type game, where you start to evolve into a being like Frieza and can breath in space and fly around in it.

Think how long the game even would be, if you would start from an amoeba like creature, and everything depends on what kind of planet you spawn, maybe one day you're able to leave the planet and go to some place that makes you stronger, because of the atmosphere, the solar radiation or the gravity.
Maybe you arrive on a meteorite with some type of element that could start a life when getting the right combinations, like we water based creatures did.

These so called death threats aren't real death threats. I'm tired of reading these stories. Anyone that is online has gotten them. It's simply immature people that don't know how to express themselves or simply think they are funny. Either way it's pathetic. But the people that take them seriously are almost as bad. Stop reporting this, unless there is an actual real threat. Let's move on and not give the kids the attention they are seeking..

@straightcur: to be fair though, it doesn't sound like Sean's taking them very seriously. to be completely honest however, every single one needs to be taken seriously because you really can't tell if one is legit or not.

@bigrob007: Oh, so you'll be able to detail the last game developer killed as a result of an anonymous death threat on the internet.

@Thanatos2k: So you're saying death threats shouldn't be taken seriously because you can't think of a past occurrence?

I'm sorry, but that sounds like a completely stupid way to go about it.

@LPDisturbedHU: That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm saying anonymous death threats over social media shouldn't be taken seriously, because there is no reason to take them seriously. They've been around for how many years, and how many game devs have been killed? I know I don't get paranoid and overreact over things that have minuscule chances of killing me, like flying in a plane. Did you know the pilot could crash the plane AT ANY MOMENT? And unlike a game dev getting killed over anonymous twitter threats, it's even happened before!

Look at his response, he's not taking them seriously either. Only the usual suspects in game journo land appear to be trying to trump up this story.

@Thanatos2k: to be clear I don't believe a spectacle needs to be made of every death threat. If you threaten someone's life though, no matter how casually, you deserve some form of punishment. treat it like a gun someone hands you. would you point it at yourself or someone else without knowing whether or not it could discharge? I have no sympathy for anyone who perpetrates a death threat.

@bigrob007: Sure, but that doesn't make the threats credible or that the victim should in any way fear for their life.

This guy clearly didn't.

@Thanatos2k: nobody is really arguing legitimacy though. the argument is that it's a subject that shouldn't be taken lightly, regardless of intent. it's not a "joke" because you can't possibly know what someone else is really thinking, or what they're capable of. there are some messed up creeps out there.

@bigrob007: Uh what? If a threat isn't legitimate, you can take it lightly. If a threat has no intent behind it, you can take it lightly. If a threat is a joke, you can take it lightly. I don't even know what you're trying to argue.

Saying "you can't possibly know what someone is thinking" is a non-argument. You can't know what someone who DIDN'T SEND A THREAT is thinking too. You can't know what someone who praised you is thinking too. They might want to actually kill you. In fact, very few random killings are done by people who leave threats first. Do you live your entire life in paranoid fear of every human you come into contact with because there's some "messed up creeps out there"?

Not a good way to live your life.

@straightcur: Death Threats should never be ignored. There are some truly crazy people out there and you never know what they are capable of. It doesn't happen often, but it has happened and will happen again.

@kryptin: So hold on, you're sure people have been murdered after stupid threats like these, but you can't name any.

Does no one else see the contradiction here?

@Thanatos2k: he can't name any developers killed because you were being overly specific so you could knock his argument down afterwords and play dumb. I'm beginning to think you weren't playing though.

@davillain-: Death threats over any piece of entertainment makes me lose my hope for humanity.

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact we have a Deadpool movie, but no one needed to send 20th Century Fox bombs (supposedly) or death threats (I can 100% believe).

What makes me wonder the most is how they could wait a year because of a delay and now it's just 2 months delay and they're sending him death threats..

Despite most if not all not being genuine, it is still pathetic to be so enraged due to a two month delay. Two months time will only be a benefit to the game rather than a detriment, have some self control and play something else in the meantime.

I look forward to the final product, do what you need to do.

By "threats" he means anonymous dbags sending them via stupid social media apps. Those aren't real, nor is social media.
