After Announcing Delay, No Man's Sky Dev Gets Death Threats

"I have received loads of death threats," Sean Murray says.

This week, Hello Games announced that its ambitious space-game No Man's Sky has been delayed from June to August--and not everyone was happy.

Designer Sean Murray said on Twitter that he's faced death threats in wake of the news. Here's what he had to say on the subject (via Polygon).

Kotaku broke the news of No Man's Sky's delay. The author of the story also reports he's received threats.

Previously, No Man's Sky was pegged to debut on June 21, but Hello Games confirmed on Friday that it's now coming in August. Specifically, it'll be out on August 9 in North America, followed by August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK.

"We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we're prepared to make the tough choices to get it right," Murray explained about the delay.

"The universe of No Man's Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn't been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation," he added.

In April, Murray talked about why No Man's Sky was almost canceled and shared a story about snubbing Kanye West (sort of).

Outside of the whole being threatened issue... I find it super odd we were at a pinch over 3 weeks until release and suddenly you realize you need another 2 months to finish up.

the thing is... I don't really think this is news.

I bet it happens to a lot (most) of developers when they delay a game.

This dev just puts it out there for extra publicity

@GhansB: its only really news because its very very highly anticipated. Its become a high profile game over peoples anticipation of what it can do. Not many games out there give the same effect. Also with it being delayed so close to its original release, it was out of nowhere. Usually delays happen within a few or more months, not around the same month of release.

@GhansB: It would've been news back when people had to send a letter or make a phonecall. Those are traceable and it meant the sender was crazier. Now with the internet any teenage edgelord can send death threats.

I hate the current crop of gamers. They are mostly immature, selfish, spoiled, ignorant, impatient, self entitled brats that have nothing going on in their own life.

@rasterror: Nah, I don't think it's mostly. I think there is a small crop of nutcases, but a very small one. And it happens in everything. I mean, jeez, I have a feeling athletes who botch big games get far worse.

Note, I am not defending said nutcases. They are, in fact, nutcases. But even if there are, what, 100 of them? (Which is a lot of death threats, really) that's a teeny tiny percentage of all of us.

Have faith. Players of games are good folks. Mostly.

You have to take most of these threats as seriously as you take people who say "I'm moving to Canada if so-and-so becomes president". I'm sure there are a few twisted people who do send death threats for small things but I don't think any would for a mere two month delay. Talk to a person who works at an abortion clinic about these video game death threats and they'll laugh in your face, they get way worse and those threats are actually credible.

WTF is wrong with people.

It's a ****-ing game for crying out loud. You're entitled *** isn't going to die if you don't get to play it two months later. I'm getting sick and tired of these inane man babies crying and whining that the game is taking too long to release.

I've been gaming over 30 years and not once did a game delay affect me in any way.

These dev's need to do like iD and Apogee back in the day and list the release date as: "When it's done"

And Moonco....seriously do you find it that hard to believe that people online wouldn't do something THIS stupid. Proof or not, it's pitiful behavior.

To those people I say grow up, there are PLENTY of other games to play while you're waiting and learn some patience for ***** sake. >=-(

I can believe it. I remember when Kanye West had a article on here about his game and all you would read is comments like "i hope your family gets brutally raped and murdered on your daughter's birthday you stupid ****" and all you can do is just sit there like wtfs wrong with this guy. Did Kanye rape you or force your family into poverty by putting your father's employer out of business out of greed?

Its funny tho because I bet the same guys saying all these terrible, violent things were the first ones to cry during Jack Thompson's era of attempting to ban violent games. The sad part is that he would have actually had a case if he was to read some of the comments you guys leave.

I wouldn't be that surprised if the threats were real or the guy was just being dramatic. Assuming there were actual threats made, I think the worst thing this guy could have done is go public with them. All that does is show the trolls making them that they are being heard. Don't feed the trolls; ignore them and they'll leave.

If you are actually seriously threatened don't advertise it to the world, tell the police. If you just announce it to the world all over social media it just makes it look like you are seeking attention.

Proof? Guess what, there's none but his tweet. This crappy trend of letting social media be judge and jury has got to end. If he really felt threatened, he'd have gone to the police. But the reality is he needed to draw attention to his game.

Play that victim card. Cry for help from corrupt game journos.

(via Polygon) tells you all you need to know about this farce. No proof, no examples, just smear gamers and garner that sweet sweet sympathy and free PR.

Seriously, any child / manchild who does this kind of criminal acts needs their IP address tracked or something like that and sued / arrested. Video games have become one of the largest and respected medium in the entertainment world. We don't need these plagues in our gaming society to bring us all down and make us look bad as a whole.

Death threats over a video game delay? Have you people lost your minds? Think about all the Vaporware titles back in the day and Aliens: Colonial Marines lies.. and Duke Nukem'..wait I'm starting to see a Randy Pitchford pattern here...

THIS get's your fur all up in a dander though? a 2 month delay? That's it?

My Acehole hurts from Gearbox alone, not counting all the early access abandoned games I own...

@Daveof89: I don't think he's saying he is. I mean, he mentioned it, sure, but his tweet was "but don't worry, Hello Games now looks like the house from Home Alone" not something either a) scared or b) preachy. This was a throw away laugh it off tweet.

One has to wonder about the legitimacy of this, given that certain devs will happily play up any martyr status they can grab. If you've gotten loads of death threats, prove it, and don't just display your victim status on social media. Oh and pro tip: they aren't really coming to kill you, Sean.

Does one? One would think that the practical impact on one's life of speculating about the validity and motivations of a matter one is in no way involved in or has any actual insight into would be extremely minimal.

I don't get their logic, why death threat the guy who is making the same game that makes you wanna death threat someone if you're not able to get your hands on the game as soon as possible. Pretty counteractive seems to me.

@freedom01: May/June is jam pack with new games to play, hell even I'm having a hard time trying to finish up before the next big thing releases but I'm really glad No Man's Sky was push back to August at the very least since I got nothing to do this August anyway. People these days just need to get a life and have some patience!
