After Announcing Delay, No Man's Sky Dev Gets Death Threats

"I have received loads of death threats," Sean Murray says.

This week, Hello Games announced that its ambitious space-game No Man's Sky has been delayed from June to August--and not everyone was happy.

Designer Sean Murray said on Twitter that he's faced death threats in wake of the news. Here's what he had to say on the subject (via Polygon).

Kotaku broke the news of No Man's Sky's delay. The author of the story also reports he's received threats.

Previously, No Man's Sky was pegged to debut on June 21, but Hello Games confirmed on Friday that it's now coming in August. Specifically, it'll be out on August 9 in North America, followed by August 10 in Europe, and August 12 in the UK.

"We understand that this news is disappointing. Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we're prepared to make the tough choices to get it right," Murray explained about the delay.

"The universe of No Man's Sky is incredibly vast. More than you can imagine. This is a type of game that hasn't been attempted before, by a smaller team than anyone would expect, under an intense amount of expectation," he added.

In April, Murray talked about why No Man's Sky was almost canceled and shared a story about snubbing Kanye West (sort of).

well I think stuff like this happens to other companies as well when they delay, only difference is it's not openly spoken of and about, at least I think so

Some people need to un-rustle their jimmies and CALM THE F*** DOWN. It's only a video game. Odds are at this point it's probably not even going to be that great of a game.

That's what you get when you are dealing with Playstation fanboys they did the same thing to the girl that did Lori Croft's voice the new Tomb Raider.I have said this before they are an embarrassment to the gaming industry and a cancer this just proves my point even further. It's sad when developers can't delay a damn game so it can be finish without this crap here going.Developer's need to stay away from that platform let it die so they don't have to deal with this BS anymore.Love to see these cowards caught get about 10 years in prison where they belong and out of their parent's basement

@flames325: You still pushing that meme, Xbox loser? That incident predates the existence of ROTTR, and had nothing to do with the games at all. http://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/2013/11/16/Tomb-Raider-video-game-actress-receives-death-threats/13401384625812/

Only embarrassment here is your constant shilling for a brand that's long since irrelevant.

@flames325: I would argue that this is what you get when you deal with fanboys in general. Mario v Sonic, PS v XBOX, Star Wars v Star Trek, Liverpool v United. We ask for decades when will the extreme/polarized elements among any fan group go away, when the simple solution is to ignore them. If we ignore them they have no platform, if they have no platform they're just angry folk ranting at each other. Of course that's easier said than done, especially when death threats are involved.

The comments sections of almost every gaming site are plagued with the troll toxicity of fanboys crusading (unasked) on behalf of one platform or another. Meanwhile the rest of us, as you say, look on embarrassed and wonder if folk outside of gamer culture see us all as toxic trolls issuing death threats over social media because a game was delayed so it could be completed to a standard we deserve.

But pointing at one group in particular and blaming them just puts fuel on the fire, especially when the game is releasing on two platforms. And letting the PS platform die when the majority of people in the PlayStation community are just as awesome as the majority of the people in the XBOX and PC communities is definitely over-kill.

I play on XBOX, PC, and PS. I've only ever encountered racism once, during a Halo 3 match years ago. Two dumbasses gave me hassle during the game because of my accent, then sent a few abusive and violent messages afterwards. I blocked them without replying and played the next game. And the thing is, I'm sure that they weren't even really racist. Just dumb kids amusing themselves.

Anyway, my long winded point is just ignore the lame trolls and the angry fanboys when you can. You'll be happier. But deaths threats are never casual unfortunately. Regarding them I have no tolerance.

@flames325: It has nothing to do with "PlayStation Fanboys," and everything to do with a fringe group of the gaming community as a whole. Get your head out of your rear end and stop showing your bias.

@DragonessAthena: Where have you been where everyone is "fine and happy" over the MN9 delays? Seriously, everytime the game is even mentioned anymore all anyone posts is about how they wish they had never funded it and/or how Inafune is a crook. Sure, it ain't death threats, but that's hardly what I'd call people being "fine and happy" over it.

I think the most shocking thing is that Kotaku was right about something for once. I guess even a broken clock is right at some point.

Also, internet death threats are news now? Why do people take everything they read so freaking seriously?

@dyshonest: All you have to do, is google Hello Games address. You'll find a website with their full address along with a summary of their accounts, including amount they have in debt. The thing is, if someone is crazy enough to follow through with the threats. There is always a way for them to do what they plan.

"Waaah wah we were dumb enough to put all of our personal information online WAAAH WAAAH"

Also, who the hell follows through with their public plans to "kill" someone on Twitter?

Ignoring the fact that only one whole tweet was a death threat. "Kill yourself" isn't a death threat and even that was only a few tweets.

@dyshonest: That wasn't the site that I was talking about. But even so, there are other ways to view people's address', such as the electoral roll. Which would allow you to find any of the staff's personal address', just by visiting your local electoral registration office.

Who would have thought that a man who was a big fan of John Lennon, would end up killing him? The world is full of crazy people, what may look harmless, can easily turn into something far worse.

@dyshonest: umm, usually the individuals who are getting threatened (i.e the victims) are somewhat public figures. Are you telling me it's impossible to find the personal information of the members of the dev team? I mean, for one thing, it's already easy to find the address of where they all work at Hello Games.

So I don't know exactly what's going in your head or if you just entirely missed my point, but yes, I do fear for the safety of those people who are threatened, because all it takes is one threat to be credible for this to be something serious. And the way we (and you) dismiss these threats will suddenly seem stupid when something like that happens..

Of course, should something serious happen, I'm sure you'll be outraged by the events, but you'll probably forget how you were part of those people who initially dismissed death treats as newsworthy.

@Oogazi: It's not public knowledge where Hello Games is located, so...

"And the way we (and you) dismiss these threats will suddenly seem stupid when something like that happens."

Let's prepare for the sky to fall guys. At least we won't look stupid when it DOES fall!

"but you'll probably forget how you were part of those people who initially dismissed death treats as newsworthy."

It really isn't newsworthy. It's a bunch of empty comments from internet trolls.

Even if there was any credibility, what the hell does publicizing the threats do? It empowers the people making the threats. But I'm sure you don't believe there's any problem with how our media glorifies school shooters and serial killers because "boy will you look stupid if you don't give THEM advertisement!".

Go back to Anita Sarkeesian's Twitter, where she regularly makes up fake Twitter accounts to "attack" herself then spam about the attackers.

You PC bro?

I would have thought the death threats would have come after people bought the game and saw how shit the graphics are and suddenly realised there was no game other than 'fly around and explore and stuff'.

Unfortunately that's the reality of being the face of something. Does not escuse the (insert insult here) who can't be patient for a game's release and must harass those who are making the product they so desperately desire.

People get death threats for less. Don't know why devs love to make a big deal out of these things but they dont actually try to combat it.

@kaliskonig: They had to delay the game, how are they supposed to "combat" a death threat for delaying a game?.. And you're wrong, no one gets their life threatened for having to delay something. People don't throw tantrums and pull a gun on someone because they have to wait another 2 minutes for a coffee (I hope I'm right but somehow I wouldn't be surprised if someone has...).

@kaliskonig: It kind of IS a big deal. If it wasn't a big deal, then they wouldn't have worked on it for as long as they did. They spend a lot of money to make this ya' know. Aren't you the same group of fake fans that are sad, when thousands lose their jobs, due to an EA takeover, shut-down, etc. I also don't think you would be able to know how to combat thousands of determined people in harassing and making death threats on you're life. Is there a strategy guide for that?!

Don't know why "fans" seem to love you one minute, & then stab you in the back the second that plans change from what they demand. God forbid rabid, psychotic foaming at the mouth "fans" don't get some great game, the nano-second it's released. Oh and I love this part...god forbid it's released too early...lol MORE death threats! WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT?!?!?!?!?!? LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!

Playstation Players are the scum of the videogame industry. Xbox Players would never do this... especially for a game like this. It's gonna be mediocre when it releases. Fail Man's Sky.
