As Adventure Time finishes up with its four Distant Lands one-hour specials, Cartoon Network has announced that there's more on the horizon for AT fans to get excited about. This time, gender-swapped heroines Fionna and Cake will be in the spotlight with a new ten-episode series for HBO Max.

Fionna and Cake originated in the Adventure Time Season 3 episode of the same name, appearing as gender-swapped versions of Finn and Jake ultimately revealed to have been invented by Ice King for a fan fiction. The alternate universe storyline, which included gender-swapped versions of much of the show's main cast, was a hit with fans, and was returned to in multiple subsequent episodes.

The last Fionna and Cake episode of the main series implied there was more to the duo than just being a product of the Ice King's imagination, and it's likely we'll see those questions explored in more depth in the new spin-off show. Currently titled Adventure Time: Fionna And Cake, the show has been given a series order of ten half-hour episodes by HBO Max.

"Fionna and Cake--with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov--embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery," the series synopsis reads. "All the while a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows."
