Activision unfazed by Disney Infinity

Publisher says it is "flattered" Disney is competing with Skylanders, believes it will continue to lead the market.

72 Comments

Disney today announced plans to go toe-to-toe with Activision's Skylanders series through its new game and platform Disney Infinity. With a formidable stable of franchises like Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles to draw from, some may think Disney Infinity is putting a scare into Activision. But that's not the case.

Activision vice president of consumer marketing John Coyne issued a statement to GameSpot today welcoming Disney Infinity to the market, but also making clear Skylanders is the king of the category.

"We are thrilled by the incredible success that the Skylanders franchise has had in such a short period of time. We are also flattered that one of the leading family entertainment companies is joining our 'toys to life' category," Coyne said.

"We continue to focus on delivering innovative and immersive entertainment experiences to kids around the world and are pouring more creativity into our games. As a result, we are well positioned to continue leading the category."

Activision's Skylanders series has generated more than $500 million in revenue since its inception in 2011. The game's most recent entry--Skylanders Giants--drove more than double the unit sales of the original Skylanders in the United States during December 2012.

I really don't think, EVEN with Pixar and Disney characters, this game will sell as much as Skylander has.

@Darkmoone1 What if they added Marvel, Star Wars and Kingdom Hearts characters? I'd say it definitely could sell as much, and even more if Disney would just use all of their recources.

@JayQproductions

You don't have to be a fanboy to know that the names alone are gonna sell as much. Putting effort into gameplay and putting ALOT of commitment to this is what is going to be required for this to succeed. It's common sense, not being branded a fanboy.

@Zorphose

Also what you said.

@JayQproductions well lets be honest pixar/disney characters appealed due to story and if i take a guess at the audience demographics it would seem to be more for boys rather than girls. In this regard Disney lacks the cool factor that drives these youth addictions simply due to the average character design being.. well boring. Glancing at the models I have seen other than brand recognition, disney/pixar would have to show something more than the generic to be truly competitive. I love pixar but unless they can pull from the girls in twilight fashion this seems like its going to be an rigorous up hill battle.

@Darkmoone1 @lo_crow98 dude, it's basically skylander with Disney and Pixar characters, If you honestly think Skylanders will continue the same success and be more successful than the same game with bigger names and more recognized characters, I would call you.....well IDK, i guess I would call you a fanboy but being a fanboy of Skylanders is sad enough that I'll just leave you alone now.

@Darkmoone1 @lo_crow98 Mine would be naive, except it is backed by Pixar and Disney being huge with adults and children and are widely beloved and well-known.

Disney characters, Pixar characters, more gaming appeal to little girls compared to Skylanders AND with Disney backing it...I don't see how Activision can claim to keep a monopoly on this market :P

@lo_crow98 will that be enough is the question, though this product might give us an indication of how much younger female audiences are interacting with games.

I'm surprised it sells so well, considering that it's relatively more expensive than the average game and it's targeted towards young kids.

Being a fan of Skylanders, me and my son play it, I am super excited for this game as well, the only thing that bothered me in the trailer is, there were no voices? I heard laughs and giggles, and I know its highly unlikely they'd be able to get all the VAs from all their properties for the game, but I hope they have atleast some sort of comparable alternative and atleast have a voice for each characte

I don't think Nintendo is willing to go that low with Pokemon but consider this is a business making money, Nintendo is better off just doing the Handheld Pokemon Games. Spyro Skylander has been out for a year now and Disney is going to have a hard time catching up and assuming Nintendo follows, it could be all Disney, Activision, and Nintendo all out War.

@EasyComeEasyGo Nintendo already releases multiple Pokemon versions which is the same for those who don't have friends to get the counterparts.

@EasyComeEasyGo I agree with doubting there being a Pokemon game like this released, but Disney is gonna catch up quickly in this battle. While Skylanders is and I believe will continue to be successful, this Disney game is gonna sell A LOT. Parents and kids are going to eat this up, especially with how many Disney franchises there are, not to mention if they add Marvel and Star Wars in to it

hmmm, Spyro or Disney/Pixar......sorry Spyro, your about to become irrelevant again. Especially if Disney decides to throw Star Wars and Marvel in on this down the road.

Sry, but the game has become ALOT bigger than Spyro. Most kids who buy giants don't even know the importance of Spyro unless they know his past or played the first one and even then there are so many more characters that, unfortunatly, appeal more to the kids than Spyro.

@Darkmoone1 @JayQproductions regardless of where the other characters come from, their not gonna be able to compete with the names that Disney and Pixar have to throw into this game.

Brands will sell, but if the game is utter garbage what makes you think they are gonna keep buying it?

Looks like you pulled your retort out of your arse instead.

Names sell, but they don't sell THAT much. You need quality to back it up.
