Activision files to trademark 'Dance Hero'

Megapublisher registers title for possible Guitar Hero rhythm spin-off. Is a Dance Dance Revolution rival next?

It could be argued that Konami invented the instrument-based rhythm game genre when it created Guitar Freaks and Drummania around the turn of the century. However, it wasn't until earlier this year that the Japanese publisher announced its first multi-instrument rhythm game, Rock Revolution. Set for release October 14, the title will attempt to take a slice of the faux-rocker revenue pie cooked up by MTV/Harmonix's Rock Band and Activision's Guitar Hero series.

No Caption Provided

Now, it appears Activision may be readying its own rival to one of Konami's bread-and-butter rhythm franchises, Dance Dance Revolution. This week, the Activision Blizzard subsidiary filed an application to trademark the name "Dance Hero" with the US Patent and Trademark Office. If granted, the trademark would give Activision rights to the name for "computer game software," "interactive video game programs," "computer game discs," "downloadable computer game software," and other related categories.

Though Activision reps had not responded to requests for clarification as of press time, the very name Dance Hero evokes images of a title along the lines of DDR or EA's more recent Boogie. However, just because Activision has registered the name, doesn't mean a game is definitely in the offing. In January 2007, Activision trademarked "Guitar Villain" and "Drum Villain", with no sign of a game bearing either handle having yet surfaced. This past February, it locked down rights to the title "DJ Hero" without announcing a new product, although rumors of a turntable-based mash-up game bearing the name are beginning to bubble up.

I think the Japanese are better at arcade games, and lets face it: dance mat games are arcade games. I hope that Konami doesn't get kicked off its own scene, but then again I hope that if Activision does make a dance-mat game, that it won't fail.

Uggghh! What is next? A combination of Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution?!?!? One person can dance and sing at the same time! Maybe they will call it "Jackson Hero"!

I say, the chances that this "Dance Hero" game is going to succeed is really low. A lot of dancing game have tried to copy on Dance Dance Revolution's success, but have all failed. The only real dance game that will always prevail is DDR. Also, to comment about DDR's dropping popularity. It's only dropped in the western market but in the east, it's still ever popular. The Asian market is big and is growing bigger so of course these companies are looking to grow their portfolio. However, I don't see Activision succeeding.

If people want to dance they should go out clubbing or something. If people want to be in a band they should learn a real instrument. Games should provide you with a unique experience that is impossible to get in real life.

They're doing it for security of their "Hero" names, and FREE PUBLICITY. Also, DDR:HP sucked.

Hey guys don't bash Activision for this. First of all its likely they are just trademarking it to be sure no one make a Dance Hero game but them, and secondly competition is good for the consumer. If there was no Rock Band I doubt we would have Guitar Hero World Tour having drums and vocals.

STOP IT.. how original of activision. DDR and dance rhthym games are not what they were, say, 5 years ago. Today, games like RB and GH have taken the spotlight and the popularity of DDR has plummeted. Screw all these party games though, I think Activision should start making some original, single player games, just like their competitors EA and Ubisoft do all the time. I'm sure I'm overlooking some single player project in the works right now (especially considering Blizzard) but thre is not nearly enough attempts by Activision. Come up with something new, and run with it

Ok, this is where good ideas become so wildly popular that these companies start to over saturate the market with more crappy rythme games. Rock Band and Guitar Hero fans, enjoy it while it lasts!!!!

Gives us keyboard hero, something original. And here's a thought Guitar Hero changes the gameplay every sequel for instance, the obvious long jump from II and III and now adding more instruments in World Tour. So what major gameplay changes were in Rock Band 2 beside the little things likes the audience singing along, didn't GameSpot give RB2 a 'same game your playing last year' medal.

Well if it does come out it will be interesting. Hmm. . . I just had a thought. Guitar Hero: Dance Party. 4 Band Members attempt to play a song while up to 2 people attempt to dance to the attempted music. Hmm. . . It would be. . interesting.

but you would of thought that they would trademark a lot more [instrument] hero names to stop knock offs. I think this means there may be a dance hero on the drawing board at least.

Yeah this doesn't mean they're making a dancing game, it's simply them trying to make sure they hold all the names with "hero" they can so knock offs don't get confused with their game. However, this does also mean that if they decide to make a dance game, they already have the rights to a name.

Just because the name is trademarked doesn't actually mean the game will actually come out. You people need to learn how to read an entire article, not just the title. You people know who you are and you all need to be facepalmed.

I don't think they're actually going to make a "Dance Hero" game... They're just doing it so that they have less competition and nobody can use names similar to theirs.. IT'S ALSO FREE PUBLICITY FOR THEM.
