AAA game development can be 'soul-crushing,' says Warren Spector

Deus Ex, Epic Mickey designer says working on big-budget games is "a lot less fun than making games should be."

The process of making big-budget, AAA games can be a challenging endeavor that breaks a person's spirits. That's according to Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector, who told Games Industry International that developing such projects comes with many burdens.

No Caption Provided

"As cool as triple-A games are, the time and money that go into them now is just soul-crushing, at least for me," Spector said. "There are so many voices you have to listen to, so many legitimate stakeholders; it's just a lot less fun than making games should be."

Spector is recently jobless, after Disney shuttered Junction Point Studios at the end of January. The industry veteran does not know what he plans to do next.

According to Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios creative director Stefan Ljungqvist, big-budget games are here to stay, though they may decrease in number.

"I don't think big-budget games are going away," Ljungqvist said this week. "There's going to be less of them. But that's a good thing, because maybe we don't need 40 first-person shooters. I don't want to play them all [laughs], but maybe we need one, two or three."

Of coarse an elderly man will find the amount spent on AAA games soul crushing, back in his day you could buy a brand new house and car for $1,000. Get with the times or retire already, you haven't done anything for gaming in 10+ years.

Oh please, I got a lot of my female friends into gaming because of Triple A games. Showing how visuals, storytelling and character development have progressed so much that most Hollywood films are shit in comparison.

@Gamer_4_Fun

You don't need AAA titles to have great character development - I've yet to see an RPG surpass Planescape: Torment and back in the day that game could run on the average family computer.

Secondly, when it comes to gaming the best stuff coming out is either from Nintendo (since while their games aren't groundbreaking, they're still fun) or funded by Kickstarter (Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Project: Eternity, and the new Torment game are going to be better RPGs that any AAA piece of crap expect maybe Witcher 3.)

@UponADarkThorne @Gamer_4_Fun What about Grand Theft Auto 5 and Last of Us? Both games look like they're going to be great games.

Definitely gotta feel for guys like him, Chris Avellone, Ken Levine, and others. These guys are genuinely passionate about gaming, just like we are, and get to make games for a living. How awesome is that? But with these big-budget titles, you've got the publisher breathing down your neck to get the game out by a certain date, regardless of whether it's at the point you want it to be; and then it's got to "appeal" to the widest range of people possible, thus potentially diluting your vision of what you want the game to be; and then there's even cases where you're told "No, you can't do that," or "We want you to put such-and-such in there." And then you take all the heat if the game was crappy, even if it was because you were overworked and your original vision of the game was completely neutered by the publisher. I'm glad to see some of these guys getting away from the big-budget model and having success on Kickstarter, and I hope the community doesn't become as overbearing as the publishers have.

@freedomspopular I think Spector is bitter because all the other guys are jumping on the crowdfunding train and getting to make the games they want and love, while he was beholden to corporate overlords.

@freedomspopular A perfect example of that was likely Epic Mickey. Anyone that followed the game when it was originally unveiled would know that the final product was absolutely NOTHING like it was originally portrayed as. I seriously doubt the watering down of that game was anyone's fault other then Disney's. I'm sure they felt it was too dark or mature or whatever, and now look at who gets shafted in the end.

I don't know if that is how it went down for certain, it's just my own assumption.

Well, the other versions bombed, so it makes sense.

I'll buy it on pc when it is sub $20, so I can play it with the 4gb patch, and mod the hell out of the graphics on top.

@MAD_AI Unfair imo. Invisible War was a failure more so because consoles back then weren't powerful enough to capture what Deus Ex was all about. As much as PC gamers malign consolization in their games, it was much larger of an issue back in the original xbox era than it is these days.

@2bitSmOkEy @MAD_AI

I guess I was a little harsh, considering that I did bother to finish Invisible War, so there must have been something good about it after all. Maybe the cyberpunk feel that I loved in Deus Ex 1.

Other than the consolization of Deus Ex, another thing that I hated was how they handled they unified the three endings of DX1 into 1 whole ending, shows a lack of imagination or laziness.

While not as great as DX 1, IW was good enough for me to finish it at least.

And then everyone looks to the coming reign of indie games - and then they become big industry over time - and then everyone looks to the coming reign of really indie games - and then they become big industry over time - and then..............

Sometimes I think the problem is our idea of money in general and making it.

@floydshayvious Atlus and Firaxis are good examples of companies that don't try to become too big. They don't develop generic FPS games and hurl out a sequel every month, chasing the almighty dollar. You want a war game? Here you go. War Games not selling so well this year? So make it better. As for Atlus, and often Natsume, their mantra always seems to be "let's make this game great". WayForward is the same way, for the most part.

@floydshayvious I'm so indie I don't even make games, I just look at rocks, it's got multi-player too.

(srry, that's my way of saying I agree). The burden /has/ been passed onto the indie-scene, now that there are plenty of indie-developers, the sheer fact of just making a game doesn't mean as much. Larger expectations come with making a second game.

Like your last point---anytime you have to make money from the public, it kills a part of the creative process, and the demands of gamers can be insatiable.

Yeah, in my day the "one guy in his bedroom" or "a few mates make a game" model was king. Then it went onto a team of guys (or gals, sorry) having fun creating their idea. Now it definitely is a case of too many cooks. It must be very hard to have a vision and actually create it when there's sooo many people involved in it. It's not impossible, it just needs co-ordination and planning. If it bothers him, he should get into mobile gaming before that too becomes huge budget only.

It's too bad how no one can make games for fun or passion anymore these days without big corporate CEOs and shareholders breathing down your neck to make a game that sells millions of copies. Sounds like the music industry, they still don't get it either.

Or, how about just make less boring and generic FPS games, and make more RPG;s, Action, etc... This generation sucks for RPG games, SNES/PS1 days wee infinitely better. RPG games are my favorite. Instead of boring and generic online, give us a much better single player experiences.

@DisplacedCA Not really. I love working for indie companies and non-profits. Working for a AAA was soul-crushing at times. I was pretty good with it, but the burnout rate among my co-workers was insane. Working elsewhere has been a lot of fun, though.

@DisplacedCA I had the same reaction. Hard work is rarely fun and when you gladly take millions of dollars from people to fund your project in hopes of a profit, yes, you're going to have those people pushing input and asking you questions regarding said project.

Head to kickstarter, I'll back anything you WANT to make. I'm sure there are plenty of other Deus Ex fanboys like myself that feel the same. You dropped one of the greatest games ever made on us, that came way before its time, and imo you deserve better than what has happened since then.

Agreed. Same goes for filmmaking. The more people and $$, the more soul crushing it is. You can either have an impressive, big budget project on which everyone is miserable or you can have a less impressive, low budget project on which everyone is exciting and has a lot of fun. I have yet to experience anything different. Sad fact of the entertainment industry.

@WCK619 Oh? You mean he's acting just like a GAMER?! Who would sooner see EA stop making games which are such a necessary part of our livelihood--unlike say food, water, shelter--and let Bank of America foreclose on numerous homes?

GAMERS are the ones who feel sorry for themselves and whine constantly about it. Spector comes out with a couple press releases and suddenly he gets blanketed with mean-spirited slapdash labels like "thin-skinned" and, apparently, "rich who are not happy and want those with less money to feel sorry for them." Doesn't sound like gamers at ALL!!

Except it totally does, and we'd better take a long look in the mirror before we project our own self-hatred onto someone who actually works for a living.

Actually this is true for every major projects.

You have to meet the majority expectations in different domains (which also means sales), you have to deal with proportional risponsabilities and requests in due times.

And yes to achieve that, you often have to see a product before a game and if you put too much emotional energy in it you'll just end up frustrated.

Who cares how much fun a game is to MAKE? I only care how much fun a game is to PLAY.

Also, I am sorry Mr. Avalanche, but options and competition in the marketplace is a good thing. No, nobody plays 40 fps games per year, but I would rather have people attempting to stand out in a crowded market and come up with innovation and ideas to do so rather than having 1-3 FPS's come out every year and be guaranteed sales to genre fans and not need to do anything to innovate.
