A Year Later, Rocket League Continues to Add Players at a Rapid Pace

Psyonix's soccer-with-cars game Rocket League continues to add more players, more than a year after its release. The developer announced today that the game has reached 20 million players, though it has not actually sold that many copies.

Rocket League added one million new players in less than a month, as the total player count stood at 19 million as of July 20. The game celebrated its first birthday that month. At the time, Psyonix announced a series of year-one statistics, including the fact that the PS4 is the game's top platform--likely thanks to it launching in July 2015 as a free PlayStation Plus game.
Although Rocket League launched digitally, a physical version of the game has since become available. Psyonix has maintained a steady stream of content updates for the game since launch, while the next major one is coming in September and will introduce a crazy-looking Rumble mode.
A relatively recent Rocket League update allowed players across Xbox One and PC to play together. Psyonix has said it is prepared to allow PS4 and Xbox One players to play against one another, but that will first require an arrangement between Sony and Microsoft. This deal has not yet been reached.
20 million is an impressive figure, but Rocket League has not sold that many copies. Since the game offers split-screen play, each individual PlayStation Network and Xbox Gamertag is counted. This means the 20 million figure includes people who played Rocket League, but didn't necessarily buy a copy. The game has sold 5 million copies as of June 2016.
Initially developed on a budget of only $2 million, Rocket League has now brought in more than $110 million in revenue from game and DLC sales.
