Metro will be getting an non-VR title in the future, though exactly when is still unknown. The official Metro Twitter/X account celebrated Metro Exodus's fifth anniversary with a franchise timeline. The tweet also says the next mainline game in the franchise will release "when it is ready."

The timeline displays the release years of every game in the series on a subway-like map. After Metro Awakening VR, there is another dot adorned with a year marker, but with the final digit obscured. So you can be assured that another Metro game is on the way this decade.

At January's State of Play, the VR spin-off Metro Awakening was announced. The game is a prequel to Metro 2033, written by series creator and novelist Dmitry Glukhovsky. A 2023 report claimed that a Metro Exodus sequel was fully playable, but it is unknown whether this referred to Awakening or this as-yet-unannounced title. The report did not mention any VR capability or any concrete details of the game's story.

The tweet claimed that Metro Exodus has sold over 10 million copies since its release five years ago. If you want to catch up on prior entries, you can also pick up the entire franchise on sale as of writing.
