A Dog Is Going To Speedrun A Game At AGDQ 2024

We can't top that headline here in the subhed, so we're not going to try.

Awesome Games Done Quick has presented some amazing speedruns in the past, as it has featured everything from relay races to custom-made Mario games to blindfolded Punch-Out. There's another first-time-ever run coming to AGDQ 2024 in January, and honestly, this year's show has already gone to the dogs.

X user JSR2gamers posted a minute-long teaser trailer for the run, which stars Peanut Butter, JSR's Shiba Inu, whom he taught to speedrun Gyromite using a custom controller built by JSR. Peanut Butter stands in for the R.O.B peripheral, and as JSR issues commands to the dog, the good boy steps on colored platforms in order to control the game.

The first-ever documented run for P.B. (can we call him P.B.?) was 25 minutes and 29 seconds long--which we're referring to as P.B.'s PB--as shown in a separate video on JSR's YouTube channel. The info for this video also describes how the pupper got into speedrunning, as JSR says "I wanted to train him to do something special, when I realized as a puppy that he was much smarter than most other dogs I've seen. Since I'm a speedrunner (and PB was literally named after, you know, getting a "PB" in a speedrun) it only made sense to me.

Peanut Butter's run is one of dozens of runs confirmed for the 2024 event, with other runs including a Tears Of The Kingdom Any% run scheduled for one hour, an Elden Ring Any% Unrestricted run set for 20 minutes, and a race for the fastest 100% completion of Metroid Dread set for one hour, 55 minutes.

Awesome Games Done Quick runs January 17-24 at the Wyndham Hotel and Resort in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, though Peanut Butter and a few other runs will take place online. The full list of accepted games can be found on the official AGDQ website.
