45.7 million Wii Sports, 22.9 million Wii Plays sold

Nintendo reveals new stats for 27 first-party platinum sellers; Nintendogs hits 22.2 million, New Super Mario Bros. 18.4 million, Wii Fit 18.2 million, Mario Kart Wii 15.4 million.

Nintendo may be facing weakening demand in its home market, but its products continue to enjoy substantial demand in other regions across the globe. Yesterday, that demand came into focus when the publisher reported a 9.9 percent rise in its fiscal year earnings, to ¥1.83 trillion ($18.5 billion). A resounding clamor for software on both of Nintendo's best-selling platforms helped fuel that growth, with 197 million DS and 204 million Wii games sold during the period.

Nice shot!
Nice shot!

Today, Nintendo provided an update on sales figures for its first-party-published games, revealing that it now has 27 games that have broached the million-unit mark during its fiscal year. First among those best-sellers remains Wii Sports, which is sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but comes packed in with Nintendo's console in North America. The sports minigame compilation has now sold 45.7 million units since its November 2006 launch, easily outpacing Wii Remote pack-in Wii Play's 22.9 million units.

DS software sales offer a bit of a closer race in the best-selling game category. Nintendogs remains ahead of the pack, having now sold 22.2 million units through the publisher's fiscal year. However, New Super Mario Bros. and the original Brain Age aren't far off the animal-training simulator's heals, with the former having sold 18.4 million units and the latter at 17.4 million units. All three games have previously been the subject of hardware bundles.

A full list of Nintendo's million-unit sellers during the period can be found below.

The Wii, all I have to say is kids and soccer moms. Not gamers. They are smart although I don't like it. I would never buy one but it is a little bit of fun watching people look stupid swinging for the fences and al you have to do is flick your wrist. NINTENDOG are you serious the only games that actualy takes some skill at playing on this list is Smash Bros. Brawl and maybe Super Mario Bros. and that make this a good system. It just shows how numb the buying public is when money is an issue. Quality goes out the window and what cheap wins. THAT A SHAME I wonder what will happen when the recession ends and people go back to spending money again.

Nintendo was smart about attracting the casual gamers, just look at those sales. I respect the casual market Nintendo has produced because I'm happy to see most of my family having a good time as a group with the Wii. The only consequence with the casual market, too many other gamers complaining. Don't mind the list. The casual is going strong and don't let it get to you. I'm not casual and still somehow I'm finding my fair share of great games on the Wii.

@ okassar a fad? hmm three years dominating both the PS3 and 360 combined is not a fad... and even Sony and Microsoft know that because they are investing in remote sensor technology for their systems. They have seen the writing on the wall and are copying the true innovative system... the Wii. All the 360 and PS3 are are previous systems with upgraded hardware, there is No innovation with them. The Wii stepped 'out of the box' and created a unique playing experience... and have dominated this generation. Look at last generation, the Gamecube was the most powerful in hardware, but did not sell well. Its not about fancy graphics or 'special' processors, its about gameplay and Nintendo has dominated because of it...

@ nappan its a crappy game because you don't like it? It has had plenty of play in my house. If anyone is acting like a fanboy its all the whiners about it being a 'non game'. Once again I state that if Microsoft or Sony want to increase sales, they should bundle a game with hardware. (who says it has to be like wii play?). Until then the whiners need to face the fact that the game has sold well.

"There were so many guys didn't know what to play on Wii. Why they didn't know how to choose game? Because Wii games looked suck. They had no choice, then chose Wii Sport." Was that supposed to be English? That was the worst attempt at the English language I've seen in my life.

@Inconnux: Wow, you gave me insight into the fanboy brain. You see, people are not jealous that other companies haven't made a similar piece of garbage. The issue is that it is a terrible non-game. Period. If you want a fight on the internet, go elsewhere. @cheesytaco69: Noooo. See.. how many Wiis have been sold? Over 45 million!... now how many copies of Wii Sports have sold? 45.7 million. So, maybe a few hundred thousand were purchased solo. Maybe. Don't blame me, blame the math.

I have to laugh at all the whining about Wii play not being a game... NOTHING is stopping either Microsoft or Sony from bundling a game with their extra controller... Smart move Nintendo, bundling is good for business! Too bad Microsoft and Sony aren't that bright.

Why are you complaining about this? This is strictly a Nintendo stat that they released. I bet that not all of those WiiSports games were bundled. Some people's probly got ruined and they had to order a new one. (Like mine)

Baladan--"While most of its competitors are in the red, Nintendo is still in the black even in the midst of a global recession."As far as games go,you're wrong.Activision-Blizzard would be a really really good example of how extremely wrong you are.And hardware...consider the Wii as much of a fad as the scooter, sells like hot cakes but it's one of the stupidest things in the world. The 360 and PS3 are so much amazingly better it's not even funny.Don't even try to argue with me because I know and you know that that would just be trying to justify your waste of 250 bucks on garbage. Thumb up if you think the Wii is a big fad, thumb down if you're a sore loser.

wii sports/play are not games. If you consider those games, then the number 1 game of all time is solitare and minesweeper. which has sold with every single copy of windows since 95. So they are at what... around 400 million copies sold?

yeah, it's fun to look at the top selling games of all time. Many of the big Ninty titles were sold with consoles/peripherals so it makes thing a little lopsided. Personally, I don't think that's the right way to count totals.

While most of its competitors are in the red, Nintendo is still in the black even in the midst of a global recession. It is amazing that games first released years ago are still selling well today, which shows how important a broad gaming demographic is to the video game industry. Without this broad audience, the industry would be in a less profitable state as it is now.

bumpies: "This just shows us that 47.5 million people brought a wii and only 15.4million still play it because the first three games come in bundles" ...and everyone just buys a single game, ever. The rest of the list were bought by non-Wii owners. ...and 3rd parties don't make games for Wii. That's some great math there boy; you are so good you probably never put any attention in class. Next time, please think long and hard before you let your hands run wild on your keyboard.

@BigBoi17: This is just a list of Nintendo games. The truth is there are a total of 54 Wii and 91 DS games that have sold more than 1 million. If you deduct the Nintendo games listed above then that means 43 Wii and 75 DS games that are 1 million plus sellers made by 3rd parties. << LINK REMOVED >>

Doesn't Hexic HD come with every Xbox 360? Are they counting that? And by this standard of games bundled with hardware, Solitare and Mindsweep must be the best selling games of all time for all the PCs that come with them, where's the recognition?

Wii Play? Yes, it's crap. It's a demo of a tutorial sold with a controller labled as a game. But Wii Sports? Dude, shill out. That's a game, and a good one too. It's no Mario Galaxy, but it did what it was meant to do. It sold 3 million units in Japan for that reason. The only reason not to count this game is because most of its sales come from the Wii bundle.

Another list for Nintendo sales, oh well. The only game which I think deserves the high sale rate is Mario Galaxy for the Wii. If Mario Kart, Brawl, and Mario Party 8 weren't rehashes I would include them too. Uh, Metroid Prime. For the DS I see some crap up there, Nintendogs? Really? Pokemon and Mario are absolutely great, Mario party DS wasn't what it was supposed to be. Rhythm Heaven is good too. Professor Layton is great as well. Also the wrong Kirby sold more. Brain Age is just plain bad.

Nintendo should watch their numbers, if they want to get more money they should have to create good games, you see most of the wii game sucks (no more heroes is over there), so if nintendo launches games as GTA or Metal Gear, there is not company who even try to fight against them. But yeah everybody know that are coming new control games... its a totally shame, to play old games with a new and the most selling console... Fortunately i got too the xbox360, to erase the bad taste of new ugly games for wii... hoping silent hill, fatal frame 4, the conduit and punch out

@nappan: I agree with you all the way, its pretty clear why the Wii's line up is so bad...there isn't enough game developers who can make good games for it as it is so much easier and better to make games on 360 and PS3. Look at the Wii line up again, and what you see is pretty much all nintendo games, over half with the presence of Mario!!!. Look at the DS games and although there is still a heavy amount of Mario games, there is much more variety...plus any DS owner would know that there are a bunch of good games by companies like Square Enix which did The World Ends With You and Final Fantasy IV or Capcom which did the Phoenix Wright series

Another amazing factoid is that New Super Mario Bros has sold more than the original Super Mario Bros 3, making it the best selling Super Mario Bros game released (not counting re-releases and pack-ins). So, who said 2D platforming was dead?

@Salarian Chemist: That IS a great idea; I would buy that game in a heartbeat. Better yet, have the best of Sony and MS' chars, 1st and 3rd party be the chars. Finally, fanboys could work out their issues the way gamers should... IN THE FIELD! lol. Seriously however, that is a game I would love to see, since MarioKart is still one of my favs for gameplay reasons, but not the chars anymore. @El Conrado: Gross, probably. Net... only Nintendo knows.
