Worth buying, even if only for Smash TV

User Rating: 8.5 | Arcade Party Pak PS
Basically, this is a compilation of classics you have probably mostly not heard of. Excluding maybe Rampage and Smash TV, which are really the packs finest points. One of the games is 720, which is an okay "skateboarding" game, but it lacks a tutorial, which makes understanding why bees chase after you randomly extremely difficult. Controls are generally good, but it's the sound and graphics that really let the game down. Still - it's retro, so I can't really complain. Klax, on the other hand, is extremely easy to pick up and play - unless you're colour blind, as the whole game revolves around the placing of blocks in correct order by colour. It's really one of those games that sounds boring, but somehow gets away with repetitive gameplay through good visual design and decent gameplay, even if it is constantly monotonous. Toobin is a game whereby the character you play as is sitting in a rubber innertube and drifting down rapids against another player (either AI or human). The view is top-down, which is good as it allows for more variety in movement, which is controlled by paddling with your hands in the direction you want to go in. Naturally there's typical obstacles in the way to add interest such as fishers and whirlpool. There's several different ways to earn extra pionts, to ensure that winning the race, doesn't mean winning the game. Supersprint is a top-down racer game with extremely over-the-top handling. There aren't really many power ups, but as you can push other cars into walls and such this isn't really a problem. Once again this is a game that has AI racers that can be replaced by human players, which means that the game's life is extended. Smash TV is perfection in it's truest form. Although the game isn't especially long, the fact that you can compete with a friend to see who earns most cash and prizes means that it's worth playing over and over. What's more, it is a game that is repetitive brilliance: 8 way aiming of your shots (that are independant of your movement) and endless hordes of crazy things: from men with baseball bats, to robots with lasers theres something for everyone to kill out there! Rampage is marginal fun, but if you've ever played Rampage: World Tour, this game will seem a disappointment, due to its lack of long levels, and lack of power ups. Despite this, kicking people, tanks and trams is still fun and is always worth giving a go if you're demonstrating the games to a friend. All in all Arcade party Pak is a good reason to buy a PS One, due to it containing Smash TV in an updated format. Even if Smahs TV isn't appealing to you, there's still lots on the disk, including bonus interviews and making movies to give the game longer life still...
