Earth was saved, but Outworld wouldn't give it up without a fight!

Reviewer's Note: As a big fan of Mortal Kombat, I feel it is my duty to go back and review every game (excluding the handhelds) in the series.

The first Mortal Kombat killed in the arcades! Fans would spend hours playing it, wasting an entire paycheck trying to defeat Goro and Shang Tsung. Midway felt the need to release a second installment.

Shang Tsung was defeated at the hands of the Shaolin Monk, Liu Kang. Earth was saved. Shang Tsung crawled back to Outworld to face his Emperor, Shao Kahn. For the failure of the capture of Earth and the apparent death of Goro, Shao Kahn sentenced Tsung to death. However, Tsung persuaded Kahn to let him live and lead the Earthrealm warriors into Outworld to their deaths. The Kombat kontinues...

Fighters from the first game return with many new ones, including Reptile and Shang Tsung who were not playable in the first game. This time around, each fighter has two fatalities and even a Friendship. Friendships were added so that the government would get off Midway's back about the intense violence.

Once again, the game's control scheme consists of simple punches and kicks. Some special moves and fatalities are a bit complicated to punch in as they require you to hold a number of buttons down.

Limitations in the Genesis's hardware make the game's graphics ok, but still not the best. At times the animations can look grainy.

Mortal Kombat 2 is said to be the best in the series. I don't agree, but it is still great! A few improvements over the original make this another must in the series!
