Beta Protocol

User Rating: 4 | Alpha Protocol PS3

I bought this for £4 not expecting much in the way of gameplay, but more in the terms of story and dialogue being an Obsidian production. Well both fronts were horrible...terrible.

Alpha Protocol boast right from the case it's the first modern day espionage RPG but doesn't tell you it's a horrible one at that. You take the role of Micheal Thorton, a modern day spy whose tone of voice does not suit any event in the game. Even in real life you'd mace him for his perv-ish attempts off flirting. Thorton works for Alpha Protocol, an agency withing the USA that does the US's biding but operates under being a "rouge agency". Now the story is paced terribly. You do a whole 3 missons before you're betrayed by Alpha Protocol and you're meant to feel this need for vengeance, but, like I said, it's paced poorly and Thorton's voice actor makes it a whole lot worse. Relationships with other characters throughout the 3 missions in Rome, Taipei and Moscow are forced to keep the terrible story train a-chuggin'. Oh, yeah, the story. An American weapons company is making a loss since the cold war so they gave some missiles to terrorists, raised tensions in Tiepei etc etc to start another Cold War to boost profits! But Thorton knows that it will cause a real war! A nuclear war!!!

Enough about the crap story and characters - the gameplay. It's an RPG so there's a leveling up system that can raise stealth, gadgets, martial arts, toughness and each gun. It could be implemented well if the AI wasn't terrible, controls so awkward, puzzles so basic and gadgets so useless. Each mission is a chore to get through and you end up thinking "Why? Why am I playing this?". You can upgrade your weapons by buying or finding attachments for them or buy new ones that feel and act the same despite the numbers being different.

Graphics are awefull (It's an Obsidian games) with lots of texture pop in and rough edges and being ugly overall.

Avoid this game. Spend £4 elsewhere. Most PS3 games are less than that now.
