The first time I was introduced to video games was when I was younger. I was at my grandfather's house for a family reunion and I was watching my uncle play Age of Empires. How fascinated I was as I watched my uncle order the small little workers to chop wood, gather berries, fish, and hunt. I watched, utterly mesmerized, as he slowly built his empire, advancing through the ages, stone, metal , creating armies and conquering enemies to come out on top, a true master of the Age of Empires. So was my first introduction to video games and the world of RTS (Real-Time-Strategy) gaming. Although in the beginning when I began to play Age of Empires I suffered many setbacks (not understanding some terminology, why everything but my base was black, lack of soldiers, wood, food, stone, gold… sometimes all at the same time.) I found it very entertaining to construct buildings, raise armies (sort of…) and explore terrain, fighting my rivals as I went. As I grew older I began to understand more and play better and eventually grew to love this well made, classic, RTS. The original Age of Empires was good but "gold addition" improved on many aspects faulting in the first, one of the most important being the ability to have more than one unit in the query at the same time, other aspects were better units and more ranged civilizations to play as. Music, though lacking in quantity, makes up for its quality and how it fits so perfectly with the setting of the game. Game play is fun and entertaining (and will keep you glued to the computer for hours… if you let it.) Although not exactly new, Age of Empires will always hold a place in my list of favorites. Age of Empires: Gold Edition is a classic not to be overlooked by RTS Gamers.
