There's a good story chock full of twists in Again, but the pacing of the dialog and clumsy navigation kills it.

I really liked Cinq's Trace Memory and Hotel Dusk, so I was excited to try Again. The game has sparks of the good mystery noir of those games, but it features some odd core design choices that make it pretty tough to play.

The basic premise is that you're helping your protagonist (an FBI investigator) and his team capture a serial killer that has arisen after 19 years, and with a mysterious connection to your character. You carry this out via the usual exploration, collect/analyze evidence, and talking to people.

The good:
* The mystery unfolds with some interesting twists, some good cliffhangers, and a generally strong noir style.
* Visuals are effective, and very reminiscent of Cinq's other games -- not animated per-se, but some sequenced photographs of the characters showing basic emotions or scenery items mixed with some typical pencil-sketch accents.

The not-so-good:
* Dialog is meant to feel very natural and conversational, but between each sentence you click, wait for the text to draw, wait for the character animation to emote to match, read, and repeat... for EACH and EVERY line through the game. Conversations take entirely too long... "How are you?" "...." "Hey, how are you?" "..." "J, hello?!" "Oh, sorry." "How are you?" "I'm fine." I've sat through 8 character animations/drawing of text for all of that... yes, I get it's supposed to be immersive, but it's just boring instead.
* The characters are not as quirky or interesting as other Cinq titles. I found the characters to be very bland and unlikeable... I really didn't care much what happened to them outside of the protagonist.
* Navigation through screens is a combination of stylus use and the arrow keys (you hold the DS book-style), and it's very challenging to move through scenes, get close enough to examine objects but not overshoot them, etc. Also the investigative text prompts during room examinations are often vague and you're not sure you've performed your examination correctly.
As a whole, I wanted to like this game, but found the pacing and bland/annoying characters a killer.
