Mistwalker cancels Cry On

Final Fantasy creator's studio and AQ Interactive pull plug on Xbox 360-exclusive action RPG due to economic viability, market conditions.

Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi came out swinging in 2004 when his newly formed studio Mistwalker announced a trio of new games: Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon for the Xbox 360, and Ash: Archaic Sealed Heat for the Nintendo DS. By the end of 2005, that list had grown to four, with the role-playing-game-oriented studio revealing a partnership with AQ Interactive to create the Xbox 360-exclusive action RPG Cry On.

Unfortunately, Cry On has dried its tears for good. On Christmas Day, AQ Interactive announced via its official Web site that its collaboration with Mistwalker has been canceled. The game maker attributed its decision to shelve the project to the property's uncertain franchise potential as well as current global economic conditions, which caused many game-industry casualties last year.

"To everyone who is looking forward to the release, we deeply regret that we're experiencing so much trouble," AQ Interactive said in a statement.

Blue Dragon Plus, a DS edition of Mistwalker and AQ's underwhelming Xbox 360 RPG released in August 2007, is currently in development at Ignition Entertainment. The portable game is expected to arrive on Nintendo's handheld next month.

Mistwalker is like the good old days of Sqaure-Soft .. this is so sad .. Hopefully .. Lost Odyssey would become a sequel and continue on to future installments.

This news was very upsetting to me when I heard through text message from a friend. Lost Odyssey was fantastic. One of the most under-rated games of last year. Thankfully, traditional RPG fans have generally come out of the woodwork to support this title. Sad day for us when a Mistwalker title gets cancelled.

That really is too bad. I absolutely loved Lost Odyssey. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the traditional turn-based system to the new ones.

well, god damn it. there aren't many companyies making solid traditional rpgs out there anymore... and now my main man Sakaguchi is goin down. this sucks. you know its a dark day in videogaming when the FF godfather cant keep up. sorry if you all like flashy lights and booms and bams, but i for one love blue dragon simple yet gripping story and game play. i guess im just old school.

Exclusives should be a thing of the past unless it's developed by the hardware company, it's simple economics.

They should have went multi-platform RPGs aren't big enough sellers to really stay on a single console any more.

arc_salvo, you are incredibly misinformed about gaming. You say, "The gaming world can only take so much of the "same old, same old" before it gets tired of it." But why is it that the best selling games are sequels of sequels? For every Bioshock, there are a million 50cent Bulletproof. When has innovation worked in the best interest of a game? Dead Space? Mirror's Edge? Ico? Shadow of the colossus? Most importantly Little Big Planet...Many games use innovation as a sales point, and many get recognition but little in terms of return. So NO, it has nothing to do with innovation, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey would have not fared any "better" if they had been innovative. They would have been better games, but that does not correlate into better SALES.

That's a shame - both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were fun, although strictly traditional JRPGs.

Well, I'm not surprised, it's a smart move, financially speaking. I wish they'd made Blue Dragon more innovative and less stereotypical and cliche-ish. That would've gotten more sales for it, very likely.

In fact, I wish they'd tried a more innovative idea to begin with than the concept of Blue Dragon. The gaming world can only take so much of the "same old, same old" before it gets tired of it.

Frankly I think Blue Dragon would have sold alot more if it didn't have that damned Dragon Ball Z art style to it. Square Enix really needs to stop making those kind of games, and stick to their own unique style of detail, it's much better.

Personally I prefer turn-based games over real-time ones, so I don't feel that they are in any way inferior to action-rpgs. I will say, though, that Lost Odyssey's battle system moves pretty slow to the point where it can become boring at times, and the game didn't give players much control or customization. But, it would be nice to see just what Mistwalker can do - they have improved a lot since Blue Dragon.
