Great engine, shame about the UI

User Rating: 4 | X Rebirth PC

I was really looking forward to Rebirth- it showed real promise, and it delivers in several areas-

AI path finding is much improved, visuals are, while not technically impressive, artistically well done. The number of at-launch bugs seem significantly lower than normal -so there are signs of a good game poking though the problems...

(I should note that when I say 'lower than normal', that still means there's quite a few serious game-breaker grade bugs, but past history suggests there's good chance they'll all be fixed, given a month or two.)

The problem is whatthey're poking through. The UI is fundamentally and completely, awful. In fact, awful is hardly sufficient to describe it. It is clunky, slow, broken, unintuitive, incomplete, difficult to see, and generally all-around hideous. About the only thing that can be done without spending ten times as long as you should doing it is actually flying around in space- for anything more advanced than that, the UI will rapidly and efficiently deliver you to a pinnacle of frustration.

If they rip the UI out and build a new one from scratch, they'll have a good game. Until then, stay away.
