User Rating: 8.8 | WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth PS2
THQ...in their relatively short reign with the Smackdown license, they've managed to turn wrestling games from half assed crap like WWF Attitude, to the creme de la creme of videogames, rated with games like Metal Gear, Gran Turimso, and Tekken. With their arcade style gameplay, combined with some good humour, they created the Smackdown series. Firstly is has to be noted that this game isn't a simulation, it's more of a mix between arcade and simulation. Although the gameplay is fast and furious, with a slightly simple control system, it has a great deal of depth. Each character has about 30 moves, and alternative costumes for each. Although 30 moves might not seem much, with over 40 wrestlers on offer, this game will take a long long time to master. Saying that, it is also easy to pick up for beginners. There are two basic gameplay options; exhibition and Season Mode. Exhibition matches allow you to take control of whoever you wish and play in any of the games 25+ match types. Frankly you can get lost for hours setting up dream matches. The Rock vs Stone Cold in a steel cage. Hogan vs Taker in a table match. Triple H vs Shawn in an I Quit match...the list goes on. In Season Mode, however, you have the opportunity to live out the career of your favorite WWE Superstar. Want to make Maven the greatest of all time? Wanna see Stone Cold become a hardcore loser for leaving the WWE? It's up to you. You have until Wrestlemania 2004 to do as you wish... However, as much fun as you can have getting Brock Lesnar to ask Val Venus for a cure to his insomnia, Season mode's enjoyment is multiplied 10 times when you enter your own created freak/wrestler. The CAW (Create a Wrestler) in this game is tremendous. You really can make up just about any person you want, and with practice (lots of it) you could make photo-perfect versions of yourself. But for amatuers like me, it can still be used with relative ease. There are even some pre-made faces, so if you want to create say D'lo Brown (why would you?) you simply set the hair, cheek, eyes ect. to No.2. Overall, this game is pure excellence. If you're a fan of the WWE, this game is a must have. Brilliant graphics, brilliant gameplay, as long as your life is, and more features than you can shake a stick at...
