Worms: Open For All

User Rating: 7.8 | Worms: Open Warfare PSP
Here it is... the one thing I've been wishing for unlike anything else... Worms returning to its 2D roots. The fact that it's on a portable system just adds to the package. Is it intact? No. Is it fun? Most definetly.

Gameplay: This is the good old Worms gameplay I remember. A decent assortment of weapons (Although not as many as in the old 2D worms unfortunately...) and a great feel to all of them. One of the things I always enjoyed about the old Worms is that you could use flame throwers and girders to make your own hideouts. And here it is, back in 2D form. I do wish the A.I. could have been a bit more consistent, as one moment they're awful, and the next they are sharp shooters. Overall, the gameplay feels about the same as it use to.

Graphics: Identical to the old ones, with some slightly smoother edges. I'm glad they haven't been drastically updated, because that would just feel weird. All that has been changed is slightly less warped Worms, which would occasionaly frustrate me about the old ones. The levels, weapons and explosions are still great.

Sound: Ah, yes, the worms war call. It's back and better than ever. I was hoping to find a bit more as far as more sound effects, optional music and the like, but, you can't get everything you hope for.

Value: There is no campaign really to be found, which is a bummer, but Worms was never really about that. It's always been about multiplayer. Yes, it has an Ad-Hoc mode and a Hot Swap mode, but there is no Infrastructure mode. But still, creating teams and battling them out in random matches will not let you down.

So, is Worms: Open Warfare a smart purchase? For the old-school 2D version fans, this is a no-brainer. Yes. But for all of you who weren't a huge fan of the 2D versions, I would think twice about the purchase. But for me, I know I'll be playing this game for a long time to come.

Positives:
+ The old Worms 2D formula is still here and is still great
+ The graphics are slightly improved over their year 2000 predecessor
+ The Worms still sound great
+ Playing with friends is great

Negatives:
- The camera isn't great
- No infrastructure mode
- No extra options for music
- The A.I. is touch and go
- This won't convert any non-Worms fans
