Overlooked "Worms" based puzzle game.

User Rating: 8.9 | Worms Blast PS2
Here's an obscure little gem of a game and no mistake. Several worms characters appear in a puzzle game where they are floating in a boat and armed with a bazooka while attempting to destroy coloured blocks on the ceiling with the said bazooka. The coloured blocks above must be shot with the same coloured bazooka shell loaded which is indicated by your targeting reticle.

This game features many different modes of play with virtually all rules customisable. In single player there is the horrendously difficult puzzle mode where you travel around a made-up world and attempt to complete stages with strict regulations. There is also a versus mode against either the computer or another human where the screen is split and you battle to destroy your blocks that constantly fall in an attempt to survive longer than your opponent. You see, you can die and lose your lives if your boat is ever sunk. And there are many ingenious ways to sink your opponent. Pick-ups (in the form of crates that are mixed up with the coloured ceiling blocks can do all manner of weird and wonderful things. Some give you torpedoes to send over to your opponent while another can cause all the fish swimming beneath the other player to become piranhas eating their boat in a very short time. Other power-ups seem less dangerous but overlook them at your peril as some are very useful indeed. For instance the laser beam can effectively clear your screen if you find yourself in a jam with too many blocks surrounding you. If the blocks fall in the water then it's no big deal but if they fall on you then you take damage. Even worse is if the blocks don't fall but instead are still attached to the ceiling then they will push you under straight away. Mistime a bazooka shell and you can also expect trouble in the form of a rising water line or the shell falling back in your face causing damage. All this is further enhanced by the partition wall in between the opposing players areas. It has an opening that appears quite regularly meaning that you can fire your bazooka into their area. It is all too easy to neglect your own side while you are happily flinging shells their way in the hope of damaging or sinking them. Mind you, they are probably going to do the same to you. :)

Different characters have different attributes such as speed, agility, strength and so on and these can play a major part in how you play. There are also three hidden characters to unlock. Graphics on the whole are very good as is the sound and control is simplicity itself. If you make a mistake you know it's your fault for a trigger happy finger or the wrong choice of character for your gameplay. Not to mention that weather effects crates are random and could cause you more problems than your opponent You have been warned. :)

The best fun you could have with this game is if you get your buddy to play a versus match against. It is addicting and will lead to more than one grudge match as I'm sure dirty tactics is what this game was made for.
