Konami's attempt to put the PS2/XBOX soccer franchise onto the PSP could be called a success, some people may not agree.

I received my copy of the English version (PES5) a few months back in November and I am assuming that it is exactly the same game as the American version. First off, the presentation is exactly the same as the console versions which is a good thing as they have ‘nice’ menu systems that some games sometimes don’t have. There is a disappointment in the amount of content in the game though, as the Master League/Cup competitions from the console versions are absent from the PSP version. This could be construed as a major disappointment for some people as that is the long game type that most people play when hey play the Winning 11 series. I don’t use it a lot(and I’ve got the PS2 version) so I don’t really miss it that much- lets face it, the option isn’t that portable- you would rather pick it up and play it. The load times are a bit erratic with times of 30-40 seconds but that isn’t as bad as it sounds, seeing as you play a full, long game after it. There are also unlockable extras in the PES shop, but you will soon get them all if you play it often enough. There are less than on the PS2 versions but the ML unlockables can’t be on the PSP version anyway. Another point to make is that it lacks any commentary- but if you’ve ever played the console versions you know that is annoying anyway. Also the pitchside noise isn’t quite what you would expect from a full game on the TV, more like a training ground! Finally the Wireless mode is very proficient, it suffers from barely any lag and is one of the better Ad-Hoc games i've played on the PSP.

In conclusion, Winning Eleven 9/Pro Evo Soccer 5 on PSP is possibly the best soccer game available for the PSP- it is tight with Fifa 06 and the latter has online play but doesn’t have the gameplay of WE9. If you want a soccer game on the go WE9 is far from perfect- but is a great option along with EA’s soccer effort.
