A turn based shooter that focuses on random humor just as much as it does the action, but seems to miss the point.

User Rating: 6.5 | Wolfenstein RPG IOS
Even though this game uses the Wolfenstein name and logo from the console version, this is a completely different experience. Wolfenstein RPG is a turn based shooter that seems to focus on random humor just as much as it does the action. While this isn't exactly a bad thing, it does make the game feel more like a parody of the series rather than another entry in it.

The mood is set right from the start when you knock out the guard in your cell by throwing a toilet at him. From there, you get your first of many weapons in the game, the pistol. All action is turn based, though if no enemies are in the area, you can move freely as if it is a typical first person shooter. Once in combat, different guns can fire more or less bullets during a turn than others. Once your turn is over, the enemy takes theirs. It get a little unfair later in the game since during your turn, you can either move or shoot, while some enemies can actually do both. Each weapon has it's own individual ammo type and more can be found scatter through the game, some hidden in secret rooms. In addition to ammo, health packs and temporary stat-enhancing syringes can be found throughout the game. Each kill, destroyed object, or secret found earns your character experience that allows you to level up. Each level automatically increases a few predefined statistics, though you will be hard pressed to notice a difference from one level to the next. The actual RPG elements are fairly lacking for a game that includes the tag at the end of the title.

The game may have a kooky feel, but the action does have it's moments. It is rewarding to strategically maneuver into position to take out a room full of enemies while trying to conserve ammo for later battles. The last couple levels were actually quite a rush, which doesn't happen often in turn based games.

Even though this game was released alongside the new Wolfenstein on the consoles and PC, don't expect any similarities. This game takes the opportunity to make fun of itself at every turn. You will find yourself punching pictures (complete with the painting reacting to being hit), electrocuting chickens strapped to torture tables, and reading cheesy romance novels that lower your focus statistic temporarily. Even many of the character models have humorously large heads and cartoonish features that make it hard to take the game seriously. There are a few mini games thrown in that add to the odd feel of the game. The first is playing the simple card game, War, against a deranged prisoner that dresses like the soldiers. It's fun to gamble against him, but the money earned isn't used for anything in the game other than bribing the occasional scientist, although punching them provides the same results and saves you the cash. The other mini game is chicken-kicking. Yes, chicken-kicking. The rules are basically the same as skee-ball, where you must aim the chickens at a target with different points values. It's a interesting concept, but after a few tries, you will have the aiming completely figured out and will get the maximum score every time. The game doesn't even use it's typical Nazi-killing theme. It is only assumed that you are fighting Nazis, however swastikas are no where to be seen. Even the portraits are not of Hitler, but simply some one that sort of looks like him, though without the mustache that the entire world knows him by.

A story starts to develop at the beginning, but quickly fizzles into a nearly nonexistent mess. There is only one re-occurring character and it is never revealed as to whether he is good or bad. Sometimes he helps you while other times he tries to kill you. He barely makes an appearance in the final level and his impact of the game is left completely up in the air. The rest of the game doesn't really explain itself, which is quite disappointing for an RPG. After escaping from your cell, you proceed to the castle simply because it's the only direction to go and not because there is a reason for going there. The final boss just kind of appears for no reason and resembles an enemy from Doom more than just a little, causing the game to lose some serious originality points.

The graphics are decent, but not anywhere near the best seen on the system. Levels are blocky and straight forward. A detailed map makes it easy to get around, but the player icon is incredibly small and can be difficult to find right away. There are nine levels and the game will probably take between two and three hours to complete, making the developers claim of 'over eight hours' a flat out lie. Note to developers: just because your game has three difficulty levels does not mean you get to triple your advertised play time.

If you enjoyed Doom RPG on older cell phones, you will probably get a kick out of this as well, though it isn't as good a game. Many times I couldn't help but feel like the developers were either making fun of Wolfenstein or even the iPhone as a game platform. There are a few references that longtime fans of the series will certainly get a kick out of, but if your looking for some action worthy of the established games, Wolfenstein Classic is a better buy.
