Great Game, although AI doesn't go to its full potential, nor the gameplay modes,

User Rating: 8 | Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense PS
Vigilante 8 is a classic, and vehicular combat with reasonable control makes it a nice third-person vehicular action game. Vigilante does have a good offer: a fast-paced game with decent gameplay and some unlockable content that gives a player a great number of hours of fun. However, all the good things that Vigilante has makes what it does miss much more disappointing, but nevertheless ends up to be a decent game.

The gameplay places the player in control of a car and a character driver whose voice gives each car some personality, and the game has 9 initially available cars and 9 unlockable cars. Each car has its own special moves and stats, but all cars use an arsenal built from picking up weapons that are common to al cars. This is not a negative thing, because each weapon comes with a set of special attacks that definitely can bolster the player if used correctly: Interceptor missiles can boost your speed or divert homing weapons away from you, while mines can hold opponents (or you) in place or track enemies (albeit slowly). Unfortunately, the AI does not utilize these abilities, making the AI quite disappointing, since special attacks allows the player to quickly decimate opposition. The arcade mode is a simple smashfest in which the player is faced with a numerically superior opposition, which is understandable since the AI doesn't use special moves or utilize whammies (done by hitting opponents with different types of weapons except the default machine gun) well. Because the gameplay requires the player to solely destroy vehicles without any side objectives (although in quests, the player is given rather dull side objectives), the gameplay is repetitive, although that is partially made up by different vehicles and fast gameplay.

To unlock the cars, the person must completely finish (complete all objectives of all missions) the quest of the 3 respective characters of each "factions", the Vigilantes, the Drifters, and the Coyotes. However, the factions themselves have no value in gameplay or the plot, since the quests will pit you against cars from all 3 factions. The quests have no plot and that is discernable, and combining the fact that the missions are repetitve at best, ends up putting quests as disappointing at best and atrocious at worst.

Soundtrack is good, since it does feature a few hit songs such as "Go Team Fast," which can easily be one of the best songs in the soundtrack. The SFX also fits the retro theme well, since it consists of retro-feel sounds, while the weapons certainly sound powerful enough. Graphics is edgy to a point of it looking polygonal, but doesn't detract too much from the game.

Overall, the game has a nice, fast stable gameplay without much innovation, although it does not offer much gameplay modes, making the one that it has potentially repetitive.
