20 levels........i mind i remeber back them thats was a lot but....i would like some 40 leves becouse i love that game and i will finish it in less them 12 hours.
Brilliant game! schockingly bad review! deserves a much higher score! for an expansion you pretty much get a whole new game! Loved the campaign! Easily a 9/10
For those still thinking of purchasing the game; this review isn't very comprehensive.
Besides the single player campaign (which is quite good) there are officially two new units for each race. However, there are numerous new abilities and reworkings for many of the WoL units and buildings. Only one of these new official units is a build-off from a prior WoL unit (the Terran Hellbat) despite what this review claims.
A completely new leveling system for multiplayer has also been created which is accompanied by many new rewards not offered in WoL such as unit and building skins, and unit dance animations. Blizzard has also created a new training mode which helps newcomers transition into multiplayer play. Computer A.I has also been expanded upon and A.I opponents can now be programmed to follow a specific build order, or style of play. I'm very surprised this was not mentioned within the review since they are pretty major improvements.
I hope this helps.
This looks good, so I've reinstalled wings of liberty to paly through again while the price goes down a bit for Heart of the Swarm.
The reviewer said that the main char is sometimes inconsistent with there choices and all...Dude, its a girl!!!! Of course there are times that we dont understand what she does and why... We just go with the flow.... If we dont want to sleep on the couch!!!!
I don't think I agree with this review at all, and I think it needs to be redone. The story(at least for the first half of the game) was phenomenal and needs some more credit there.
The dialogue and characters were also really good, I was especially surprised at how much personality they were able to achieve with such strange looking allies. I felt that the script did a really good job showing how it really feels to be a Zerg and not a Terran or Protoss. The constant talking of betrayal and using one another was believable and well executed.
I would have to agree with many on here and say that Kevin should have reviewed this game... he can be harsh, but at least his points are really valid. This review felt like this person simply had some personal gripes with the game and they didn't look past them to see the bigger picture.
Deserves a 9.0/10 imo if you include the UI redesign for the Arcade multiplayer mode (which probably wouldn't have happened if not for the planned expansion)
Reviewing the Single Player campaign is perfectly fine, but making any, and specifically so blatant remarks on the multiplayer, when it's a very established and developed eSport, is down right ludicrous.
You get half the units purposes wrong, and you say something is overpowered? Are you kidding? Are you a pro player with thousands of hours on the game that you can say such a thing? I doubt it.
If this is how you review an eSport, I do NOT want to see your review of DotA whenever that game comes out. Reviewing an eSport is a whole other task than reviewing a normal game, please consider this fact next time you take up such a game.
Why you can not you choose 1080p video quality at Gamespot? 720p is highest avaible and looks somewhat blurry at least on fullscreen. 1080p should be standard on videos produced by big websites.
I was expecting Kevin VanOrd to review this . Anyways , those who have not yet decided to buy the game or not , should check out this review :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc48gR6r7P0
I expected Kevin to review this, but Max really did dole out some justice for the poor story presented by Blizzard. This is the only problem I ever had with the expansion - shallow writing, cheesy dialogue and no respect for the original Starcraft.
Blizzard is doing this on purpose, they call this their 'unique style' when they're just blatantly trying to cater to a typical 12-16 year old or adults with no sense of depth. Otherwise, it's a well-crafted expansion when it comes to gameplay mechanics and multiplayer interaction.
I had to stop playing the campaign because the writing and dialogue was so excruciatingly bad. Its one thing for a game to have poor writing/characters/dialogue, and quite another for those elements to be crammed down your throat like this game does. Its a shame because the mission design is quite good, its just hard to enjoy the gameplay when you have annoying dialogue being crammed down your throat every two minutes.
I don't agree with his take on the writing and the portrayal of Kerrigan. I found it emotional and moving. I was able to understand Kerrigans motivations. The rest was correct. I'm surprised he didn't talk much about the ingame cutscenes and cinematics. I felt that was pushing the envelope and innovating. I was able to tell there was an improvement from WoL.
@RoadStar1602 Nope, you can play the singleplayer offline. Though you likely have to go online for initial setup and again ocasionally to keep the offline mode working.
@RoadStar1602 Every game since Wings of Liberty have and will have an always-online requirement. You have to log-in in order to access your single-player campaign or do anything at all... =(
He's reviewing it as a game, not an e-sport. This isn't e-sport online. If a reviewer had to play an online game for 100-1000 hours, a review would never be released for it. You're just upset about the score, just walk away dude.
@Eyal-KOKO-Stern Agreed, the comment on swarm hosts being hit and run units made me lose it lol.
I'm sure he was busy with the Bioshock Infinite review. But yeah, I agree.
@Cloud_imperium Kevin is the best and should review all of GameSpot's games.
@Cloud_imperium i was expecting the same. Kevin should have reviewed this game
@Sardinar You mean Daniel, not Max.
@Sardinar (warning: some spoilers) I agree. The catalyst for her transformation was some weak Mengsk disinformation on TV. I thought she would've dismissed it as the blatant lie it was, but instead she falls for it hook, line and sinker.
Ironically, she didn't need all the Zerg power in existence to break Raynor out of jail. Even in her restored human form she was still the strongest damn Ghost ever -- she didn't need anything. Ugh.
@with_teeth26 You should finish it out. I agree with you the overall story is weak (made a post about it above), but the in-between mission voice-over work and conversations are well-done. Also like you mentioned, the gameplay stays fresh throughout -- you should suck it up, you won't regret finishing it.
@Elann2008 @Eyal-KOKO-Stern As I've said, he can review the single player normally, but the multiplayer aspect of the game is an eSport and thus can not be reviewed as something else.
That's like reviewing a table as a chair. The table works as a chair, cause you can sit on it, but that's not its main purpose.
In order to review an eSport one must review it's community as a spectator sport and in terms of the game itself, check out how hard it is to get into it and how well it does what every eSport should do, be easy to get into, yet have incredible depth. These are aspects that indeed can be reviewed by an outsider to the scene.
I'm not upset about the score as I couldn't care less about numbers. In fact while writing you this reply right now I have no clue how much they gave the game. I always ignore the number and just get the review cause numbers are retarded to talk about. Stop being a little girl.
@TitanClash She didnt get the zerg power and transform to break raynor out, she transformed so that she could destroy mengsk and the dominion after learning of his "death", however, yes you are right, no way i can believe that character would think "raynors dead? ok I believe you" Still better than WoL story IMO
