Totally, totally agree. I bought Assassin's Creed 3 at full price and played it for no more than an hour or two before giving up on it. I realized the lack of immersion on a mission where there was a snow storm going on, with no ambient wind noise at all.

Black Flag is much better, but still suffers from some of the same problems.

Danny, I was wondering what do you think of AC IV now that it's been out for awhile? :)

AC is one of the few franchises with the potential to add a roman numeral after it that will eventually surpass Final Fantasy's numeral. They churn these out every 12 months. If they stop making stopgaps like Revelations and Brotherhood, we could get past 15 in 12 years. A new numbered FF takes like 8 years to make.

I agree with the video. I am waiting for a Assassin`s Creed to be set in medieval japan since brotherhood. The problem is that naval battles was a success

@Brazucass Japan has a rich naval history. They'll be able to work that element into the setting.

I didn't really like a lot of things about Assassin's Creed III, but Ratohnhake:ton was the best protagonist in the entire series in my opinion. Ezio and Altair seemed to mainstream to me. That being said, AC3's gameplay could have used a bit more work, which I hope will be executed successfully in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

" how one of this generation's most beloved franchises went from historical fan favourite to apathetic pirating simulator" Its still about history and exploration and its still fun, its in The Golden Age of Piracy so at least we can use ships to move around. Honestly AC4 might do the setting and atmosphere very well and your complaining about the atmosphere? They've been saying atmosphere was important for this next one any our worried about that ,Danny? Its not like theyre not being accurate with history anymore, so what is The Point of the video?

I agree with you, Danny. I finished AC1 all the way through AC Revelations although I did find myself highly disappointed with Revelations. I went to the midnight release for AC3 with high anticipation and then was let down but how unrealistic it felt. Also the combat mechanics that they changed seemed like a bad idea imo. Haven't even put thought to AC4.

I fucking hated the animus and all the weird white lines and shapes and matrix crap that came with it, I think if the series stayed within its time period the games atmosphere would have been so much better. I really agree with Danny in this episode, AC could have been a really great franchise but now I'm sick of it already.

I liked the Animus idea too. Every other game just puts you in that time period with a story and game. The Witcher got it right big time though.

Also I absolutely disagree that the Animus was a bad idea. To start with it was semi-intelligently scientific, based on Jungian psychological theories about genetic memory and the shared consciousness of the human species. It was much more than a trope. It's how they handled it in AC2 onwards that made it ridiculous, but it started as a good, solid, Trek-style concept.

I'm glad he gave AC1 the credit it deserves. But then he goes on to say good things about all of the other games. The difference to me is this:

AC1 = Dexter season 1
AC2 = Dexter season 2
All others = Dexter seasons 5+

I absolutely hate Assassin's Creed now. They took something which was borderline art and made it into a money-spinning action fest.

I'm glad I stopped at AC2. Having played through the Prince of Persia series (Similar gameplay, same dev's) I was over it by AC2. I think earlier games in a series have a more creative edge. As usual the dev's decide to cater to more people, making the game more casual, so making more money but alienating the fan's who loved the earlier games.

Am I the only one who thinks that the amount of effort, detail, production values, new mechanics, well crafted world and tight gameplay justifies the "assembly line" production model of AC ?

I mean, sure they may be made for profit (as is everything nowadays) but they are by no means bad games.

And by all means they iterate much less than games like COD which only add different GUI elements and a few MP tweaks every new release.

I really enjoyed AC2, I tried to love AC1 but couldn't the world was amazing but the game was just boring. I havent been able to catch up with the series since AC2 though, I played some of Brotherhood, but by the time I was half way through it, Rev came out, and then a year later AC3 was out. I skipped to AC3 because I wanted to live in that game world and I just couldn't get into it. I have hope for AC4 though. Not sure why

Much as I love Assassin's Creed I haven't been able to bring myself to play Revelations and Assassin's Creed III - not because of the animus mechanic but because so many games have been released in a such a relatively short space of time; I just needed a breather!

I have to admit that I didn't complete Assassin's Creed III for the longest time.
Haytham was fun to use but I got frustrated that you don't get to use Connor or get to use assassin recruits until about 65% of the way in. Having said that I recently went back and finished it. I feel much better for doing so and I actually feel I undervalued it before. ACIII is one of the best in the series I think.

Black Flag is the first Assassin's Creed since the 2nd that I've actually wanted to play. I bought all of them, finished all of them except ACIII, but never enjoyed Brotherhood or Revelations and was disappointed with 3 from the moment they announced it's setting. Black Flag has the opportunity to finally scratch an itch I've had for a very long time, to play a good Pirate game that wasn't just sailing a ship across an overhead view of a Caribbean map.

Interesting. I've never gotten into AC. I played the first one, it was visually stunning, but repetitive. I saw my younger brother play part of AC2. Then I stopped paying attention. But an open world pirating simulator sounded kind of fun, which is the only reason I even came to watch this video. It does seem like they have milked this IP _to death_. I'll be curious to see how it fares once released.

o0o0o0o these comments are 1337.. haha (number of comments currently)

Are people really not excited for black flag. I mean I've never been into the Assassin's creed series but is it all just hype. I can't go anywhere without hearing about this game and apparently I'm a freak cause I'm not excited about it.

Do you guys feel the same way? ie: You are NOT looking forward to black flag?

I really wanna know cause sites like this one have been hammering this game down my throat.. especially now that the like ONLY ad to watch before videos is the trailer for black flag. I just want this game to come out already so we can stop talking about it

not to forget Altair and ezio had a gripping story line, which sadly AC3 did not have. In AC 3 i never felt like playing more to know the story twists and turns, I just played to finish and get over with it. But In previous four AC Games i felt like playing it to know more about the story i was so hoicked on to it, Even AC liberation story made more sense to me than AC 3.

I think the reason most people won't be giving ACIV a go this year is because, if there like me, they have been overloaded with AC over the last few years. I love these games but I wish Ubisoft would just take a break from it for a while. Look at Rockstar, instead of churning out GTA after GTA, they try new things, and as a result we got great games like Red Dead Redemption & LA Noire.

Unfortunately ubisoft has taken an approach of quantity over quality with the AC franchise. AC1 & AC2 were both great games AC2 brother hood was also amazing. but i think ubisoft got more lucky than anything with that game and took it as a signal that their game design team could churn out a new game once a year and for it to be as amazing. unfortunately that's not the case with a game like AC. in a game with machanics that we all know by this point, it's the story and characters that we need to fall in love with. if they can get back to make truly memorable characters and taking them on an amazing journey while still give the player to discover the story as they go, i think they have a chance of getting back to the glory days.

Some sequels add things to the series that are new and inventive and something that would make the series go in a different direction. More of the same isn't for me. And since brotherhood, it all seems like copy paste. And now they will copy paste in ac4 from far cry 3,(by the way play far cry 1 and then play far cry 3, that is the difference they should be doing between every game). You want to know what the game will be like before it comes out? Here is a summary, go from point a to point b, climb up buildings to reveal the map, kill people along the way and arrive at point B.

I really hope Ubi soft learns something from this video with regards to Assassin's Creed. After revelation it just went downhill for me. the Call of Duty business model is RUINING the game industry for us! I don't think I am going to even bother with Black Flag.

They need to expand the world. Templar game would be in the same world but a new game. From mercenaries to high ranking politician. How many secret societies exist throughout history? Control, lost of that control, the pursuit of historical and powerful artifacts (AC1). Bribery, blackmail, intimidation, incrimination, science and arms races. Lineage, nobility, murder, fake businesses, etc. Enemies, assassins, current governing body, the opinion of the people and internal rivalry.

Danny the first thing you said was assassins creed showed us capable of doing more, the stealth, the group combat,

All Assassins Creed did was show us that you can jump and go up everything, group combat??? 4 guys standing around you while one hit you blocked countered it and slashed him then the next one did the same and so on, it did nothing, probably the most overrated franchise to date, fighting was block block block counter block block counter killed, that was as deep as the combat went.

@bezza2011 Go fight a group of enemies in AC1, especially after the midway point. Face a Templar with back up! While you can try this, the game stressed stealth and meant it.

@Soulreavercross I feel the same about everything you said. I too loved AC3, but also feel that the series is tired. And in my opinion, the First Civilization storyline is what killed the series. Hell, the opportunity for a good Modern-Day AC game was killed because of it (almost literally, if you know what I mean). My suggestion: series reboot. Its dreaded, yes...but it might be the only way to save this series. Just remove the first civ stuff altogether and restart. (btw, I don't think that AC3 killed the series. The ending did. And that death was set in motion at the end of AC2.)

I gave up Assassin's Creed after the disaster that was AC3. That was not an Assassin's Creed game, it wasn't even a good game. It was a perfects example of how games go wrong when developers try to change too much. They need to preserve what is good about the games and only change what is not or what can be improved. Never try to reinvent the wheel, it always ends up badly.

The Animus is a terrible gimmick in a medium about play rather than showing. Why? It relegates the meat of the story to flashbacks without consequence. Yes, you play those "flashbacks," but they have no bearing on the real world other than as exposition. Minus the Animus -- where the action is life-and-death instead of "flashbacks" -- all of the AC stories would be more interesting. There's a lot to like about the series, but until the Animus is dropped, the entire idea is basically, dramatically flawed.

@ @AlisaGushchin Hate to burst your bubble about how the world works, but money talks, simple as that. Many studios have gone under or been absorbed because they simply didn't connect with the core fanbase or they made game series that simply repeated the selling formula without any major changes between sequels.

With the early AC games they tried new things, to which I give the (then nearly bankrupt) Ubisoft credit. Desperation motivates innovation and allows the developers to take chances not normally allowed in a business structure. On top of that they had an excellent creative team.... Who have all left the game series or the company!

Tell you what - Would you read a sequel to the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" if it was written by anyone else except Harper Lee simply because you believe that Penguin Books INC. (the paperback's license holder) would do justice to the plot or the characters?

Honestly, I wish Ubisoft good luck. I'd hate to see them collapse. But I will let others take the chance on AC4 before I consider buying it. I simply refuse to get burned by a bad game from them again.
