Well, I don't envy the task they have. I know fans of the series have high expectations, I know I do, and only time will tell how succesful they are. I just hope this isn't the death of the stand alone series. Especially if the MMO is expensive or doesn't pan out so well.
I have total confidence in this group putting together an all out awesome MMO... Blizzard really did put together a sweet gig with WOW that I certainly played for awhile... but Im ready for a new look/feel like skyrim. The only thing I pray they don't do is give up on future one-player games.... I miss the old Warcraft games...
I just hope the characters won't look so childish like in all damn MMO-s. I wan't a serious looking game like they did with Skyrim.
This just looks so lame and it's so sad to see these guys trample what could have been an amazing, ground-breaking MMO. As a huge fan of both MMOs (Started with Neverwinter on AOL in 1992) and TES (started with Arena in 1994), this could have been so much more than what we're getting.
TES was the last franchise that could have reignited real-time combat, sandbox gameplay and true player choice in the MMO space. Sure, we have games like Darkfall or Mortal, but those games have no funding and no brand recognition. And don't try to say you "can't do real-time or first-person combat in an MMO." It's been done since 1996 with a little game called Meridian 59.
This just smacks of lazy devs, cannibalizing a great franchise so they can make a sequel to the half-baked DAOC of yesteryear, stretching the TES lore to fit their play-style.
If you want to attract a massive audience, both TES and MMO fans, give them real-time combat like in Skryim, not this hybrid cooldowns with blocking stuff you're touting. Go all out, you're a Zenimax company, you can easily afford the risk and you can easily make it work.
Toeing the line like you're doing right now isn't going to attract anyone. A few TES fans will come to check out the other provinces, then leave when there's nothing compelling to see or do after a month. The usual MMO nomads will keep the game going for two or three more months until they either had back to WoW/GW2 or slink off to another game, and you'll be closing servers, going F2P and dying off faster than you realize.
Hopefully the luke-warm to ice-cold press and fan reaction smacks these guys upside the head and wakes them up to the reality. At this point, they continue unabated at their own peril, and it will likely lead to their demise.
PLEASE don't make this game to easy just like the other elder scrolls. It looks pretty cool, but easy online mmo's are the worst...
What's with the guys who are high up on the development team but don't know anything about the lore of the elder scrolls universe? "cyridonians", "where was it that the khajiit come from, elsweyr?"
Was expecting to see gameplay from the title. Instead it was just scenery. I wonder is this game gonna use the holy trinity?
I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but I think that this game should perhaps have taken a more Fable multiplayer approach. Fable multiplayer sucked ... but the idea was good. Invite somebody who you know and who has a character they want to expand on into your world. Then work as a team with that person to complete the main story. The combat could stay the same as it has in previous Elder Scrolls games but the PvP (Which sounds like crap to me) is removed and you still can use the team work that this guy was talking about.
Anyway, just my thoughts.
I am cautious about this one. yeah it looks like wow visually but what concerns me is that Bethesdas experience with combat (mmo style combat) isnt great. Their live action combat is brilliant however but I doubt that will be present on this game..if it is..sign me up..but i doubt it will be. It feels like a step backwards for them..like a side project that doesnt share the same vision as their moneymakers. Why go for the MMO market without any real original idea..and throwing away the Skyrim combat (or at least simplifying it)... when you have two brilliant singleplayer franchises (Fallout/Elderscrolls) that could be online in some form..but an mmo following the sucess of Skyrim..feels dumb
wow this looks/feels/sounds lame. I played guildwars2 beta this weekend and it felt awesome it was awesome and i feel like he's just talking about gw2 features. When i heard of these features implemented in gw2 (1 yr ago) i was hyped but now it doesnt sound original at all. I doubt this game will be good.. probably just another average mmo. i really loved all clasic the elder scrolls games tho.
Why...oh why. oh why, OH WHY?! Did they have to go cartoon style over it like every other massive multiplayer...
I think this is all for money. They just need to take their time and keep making glorious games, not on an MMORPG that's just going to waste peoples money.
"The Elder Scrolls Online E3 2012 Stage Demo"
Then i watch the whole video as an interview... Am i dumb or the title is lame?
you said you want a reviewer to tell the developer that they think their game sounds like garbage? Maybe you need to review what happened to Jeff Gerstmann. Anyways, its just called common courtesy. Its much easier to give developers the benefit of the doubt and also more reasonable.
Kind of off topic, but too amused: I like how the interviewer (one with the laptop) mentions how his two other buddies look all excited over something the developer mentions. This is what makes me skeptical of these interviews. Why? Well, since when have they shown an interview where they flat out tell the developer, in response to something they said, that their game sounds like utter garbage? I would love to see that, for a change.
Anyway, not a fan of MMO's, and really doubt this game is going to be that fun for long. The whole crowning someone in their own faction to become king, for instance. It really means nothing. Why? Because it's not going to change squat in the Elder Scrolls timeline. The "crown" (kinda sounds like capture the flag, except... capture the crown?) in this MMO can change hands thousands of times, and it will, and it'll still mean absolutely nothing because Tiber Septim will still get his pretty head crowned and his family line will rule all the way up to the Oblivion timeline.
This game looks AWESOME, cant wait, I could care less about all the people saying wow clone, or what ever, they so hooked on wow, they wont notice another good game even if it came and bit them on their ass! for the rest of us mere mortals this game looks great, and we cant wait!
Its coz brain not grow , almost any new game is first person shooter for preteens, thats why rpg games become dumb, for kids to understand!
More power to smart games, fps for brainless, shame they are so many!
For anyone that has been following the game industry in the last 3 or 4 years, this is not surprising. Almost every new game is just pandering to casual gamers and with Skyrim's success (casual as fuck) is a no brainer they are going to milk it to hell and back.
I known that the last 5-8 years everyone is going online, and now elder scrolls, however with this move is bethesda going to regular role playing games that are not online driven? for instance remaking daggerfall to meet today's technologies? thanks tdc72
I've just seen 5 minutes of the game engine, I have no idea what combat is like, I have no idea what the character classes or creation options are like, in fact I have no real idea of how this game is going to play but it's an MMO so it must be a WoW clone! (for those who take sweeping statements literally, this is of course sarcasim)
When I originally saw the picture for this on the main page, I immediately thought Diablo 3. Could they really not think of something else?
What is it with Gamespot video players? they dont have enough money to hire a proper web designer or buy a player? Cant fast forward on the boring vids
Looks awesome it's a shame it can't keep it's original engine, but then again could you imagine the lag if the graphics were as complex in Skyrim all over Tamrial? The rendering would be insane. So i'm still excited for it, it's something different
I don't get this comments everywhere "This looks like WoW, *whine* *whine*, this doesn't look anymore Elder Scrolls". Have these people played any other Elders Scrolls game than Skyrim? This isn't "Skyrim Online" this is "Elder Scrolls Online", so there is whole world of Tamriel. Skyrim was pretty low saturation and greyscale enviroment, but doesn't mean that Elder Scrolls wouldn't be high fantasy game - which it has alway been - that doesn't mean that it looks like WoW. Also, it can't look as same resolution ja number of details/polygons as Skyrim on ultra graphic, because it's going to be _ONLINE_ game, it has to work from servers whic limits the graphics.
@aetius_ Yeah, Blizzard ruined MMOs for everyone.
That would be more something for TES VI.
@rosen22 I look at it as broadening the fanbase of both TES games and MMOs.It will bring some TES fans to the MMO world while also bringing MMO fans to the TES world. Dedicated TES fans (like myself) will definitely want to pick this game up, some only for the story rather than gameplay. And that success is like a safety cushion for Bethesda; if Online fails, they don't go out of business due to a single downfall like some developers do.
Common courtesy or not, it is much more interesting to see someone speak what is on their mind. It is the reason why Howard Stern was popular.
I got more of a "king of the hill" feel from it.
Roctober has always been my favorite month.
@Fatal-Chaos Name one thing different than WoW.
@Fr0stramuz You clearly have no idea what you are talking about on any level and I'm not going to bother explaining it because I know 99% of the people reading this comment agree with me and the rest of us.
@GodTheImmortal *on PC. And MAC.
@AceMarine45 Howard Stern isn't popular with grown people.
@GT_APE Even if it was like WoW it would still be awesome it's the Elder Scrolls story and theme. As long are the graphics aren't as cartoony as WoW i would be still happy. Plus the game isn't out nor have we seen much gameplay. You can't judge it as a WoW clone yet. However i will admit when i heard about this i was hoping it would be like Skyrim except as you explore you could come across other players, and choose to duel them or join up in a party and raid dungeons etc for loot. I was hoping the online would be more of a larger explorable Elder Scrolls with a cooperative theme to it. However if this what appears to be another MMO style game it will be a let down, but i will still play.
@GT_APE a lot of things can happen in alpha stage.... only the graphic would look similar to WoW (doubt they'll change how the graphic is), other stuff like combat system might or might not be similar to WoW, they're not final.
@GT_APE It isn't release yet and still in alpha stage?
only people who have actually played it could tell you that
Original developers doesnt doesnt mean anything...
Star Wars had some of the original developers from KOTOR, and Warhammer Online didnt, but Mythic had a reputation for making the best PvP MMO ever DAoC. Both of these game were disappointments.
Were they the original developers though?
" Even if it was like WoW it would still be awesome it's the Elder Scrolls story and theme."
That is what they said about Warhammer Online, and Star Wars the Old Republic...
