I just started playing it and it seems pretty good. Maybe not a game of the year - but better than what this reviewer has said. The problem most people have, I think, is when they think of XCOM they think of turn based strategy. While UFO defense, Terror for the Deep, and Enemy Unknown are exactly that - there are other XCOM games which are not.

The level designs are no different than Mass Effect - and if you do not like retro looks and feel and not into third person games - then obviously this game is not for you.  Most third person shooters treat your friends as distractions and I always felt that they are throw aways and I often will let them die to have them recovered "magically" later.  However, XCOM is XCOM and death is nasty and permanent and you can easily lose a high level character and you need to start over with a new agent,

The combat wheel where it slows down time is like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I like it!

I hope they do a better job with A.I than Firaxis did with the re-make, i found it predictable compered with the original where you felt one step behind most of the time.

At first I was going to rant about this game for being a ME clone but then I saw that it adds strategic elements and I was like "as long as their useful its cool"

I hope Angry joe reviews this game I dont trust gamespot or IGN I´m just here for the news (that was kind of pointless to mention BTW)

Opened two videos from the main page in new tabs. Got the annoyingly loud World Of Tanks commercial on both ones, playing at the same time.

Dial it down a notch, please. Before this it was the IE commercial and before that the Snap Dragon Processor one. Can you at least make it so they play for example once for every three/five videos you watch, instead of every damn time?

And no, Random Internet Smartass #7894, I don't want to install adblock, since it completely prevents sites I enjoy from getting ad revenue.

Not bad, also it have better tactics mode than ME.

Looks pretty good.

I had my doubts about Xcom based in the 60s fighting against aliens but after watching the gameplay, you have got me converted.

Looking forward to this

This is very different than I expected. It looks interesting.

Game mechanics look a lot like Mass Effect but in the 60's.

Tension and pressure..? I play games to get away from all that!

Not really realistic. In real time battles, not much time to think. Split second decisions between life or death.

I was skeptical but this looks, like, really good. perfect mix of strategy and gunplay

this is what ghost recon should have been when it came out, I'm glad this is setting the stage to a new genre

You know what I'm missing? A World of Tanks commercial.

Does this game still has the Same-sex and civil-rights sub-plot, which is supposed to take up 90% of the story? It had something about a L G B T scientist saving the world.

---gamer.net: I commented that it sounded like XCOM was really more of a 60's period piece that happened to use aliens as a catalyst to bring out the social climate.

2K Marin: "As a narrative guy, absolutely. To both mutate and express the inner conflicts of the period."

Morgan Gray to Electric Playground: "We are definitely going to be touching on everything that we can legally do . It’s such a specific year, it’s not arbitrary. There will be historical cameos, a lot of historical reference… "

Also, they said there is no BaseBuilding or real research, and lot of DLCs. Well, that bites! :(

I enjoyed Bioshock and the new X-Com revamp but for some reason I am not interested in this game.

wow, not only did they successfully transform an over the top into a 3rd person shooter but also retained and beautifully implemented the team-based combat tactics! :O

Nice but they could have made the alien base a bit more "alienish" with strange structures etc and the environments a bit more destructible

Omg... a game company came out with something thats not a clone!

This is 3rd person ? Is this DLC for the latest XCOM  or a other game itself ?

I don't get the Mass Effect comparisons.  The camera isn't stuck to the main character and there appears to be a lot more overall tactical depth.  This also isn't an RPG.

I'm still not sure about this game, as long as it's not like Mass effect, were there really didn't matter if you issued orders to your squadmates. I finished the game on supper hard without ever issuing an order command

This looks good, but like a lot of others the first thing I thought of was Mass Effect. Gray mentions several times during the demo that they wanted to make a RTS experience that avoided the 'god's eye, top-down control everything aspect', you know the game they call X-Com! Bottom line I don't know what you have here, but it isn't X-Com!

@lahdell19 But just remember there is no Base Building and Research, or anything that makes this game new.

@PodXCOM I found the combat in Enemy Unknown to be slightly clunky, the part of the game I really focused on having fun and perfecting was the base building. I mostly saw layout design as the aim of the game with combat to get through to unlock more base. And then they go remove it? The combat in this doesn't look like it's fun enough to woo me back to the series.

@SKULLguy Was an fps but it loooked like crap so they changed it to 3rd person tactical and it look like it was a good idead cause it actually look good compared to the crap weve seen in early trailers of the fps game .

@Atheosis There was a 22min. video from 2011 that showed the gameplay, and it really shows how much they ripped-off Mass Effect, and some other ideas.

There is a video by LunaticFringe20 called "Intermission: X-COM Revisited Part 1/2"  that goes over how they ripped-off Mass Effect and even Dawn of War.

@zeusbark Supper hard, huh? I personally never got through with launch nightmare, tell me your secret.  Honestly though, in Mass Effect 2, you really needed your squad mates on the hardest difficulty, the problem was keeping them alive though. :/

@TheGlenster Xcom isn't just one genre of turn based combat, they made a space sim as well.

PodXCOM

@jecomans@PodXCOM

 I know.  ):

I even tried going to their site telling them myself,  but I guess X-COM core gameplay sucks in their eyes.

They even said this about the BaseBuilding in the gameplanet interview:

Q: Is base-building and character progression still a part of the game?

Bihary: This isn’t a base-management game, it’s a battlefield management game, so we want the player to spend most of their mindshare and imagination on how they and their agents are going to engage on the battlefield.

http://www.gameplanet.co.nz/xbox-360/features/1100070.20130521.First-contact-a-debriefing-on-XCOM-shooter-The-Bureau/

So there you have it. And they said the same thing about research.

Sorry for the late reply, but I needed to find the interview again.

@berserks hahaha thats hilarious. the FPS looked way better than this generic crap.

zeusbark

@Bhemont @zeusbark I don't remember the exact difficulty, bu there was normal, hard, supper hard, and impossible (something among those lines). Boss fights and stuff were the only real hard part. My squad got killed anyway, so I thought "why even bother managing them" Just get good armor, and fire bullet upgrades and stuff =( sorry I can't be more specific, but It's been several years since I last played ME2. ME3 I didn't really care for.

PodXCOM

@jecomans

The worst part is they were hiding the truth, because they knew fans wouldn't like it.

Like with research:  they never really say it out loud, but to "research" you would need to get a lot of alien "tech" to pay for it. Meaning you have to buy the alien weapons!

I feel a bit betrayed by the whole thing, as if they thought making X-COM fans happy was a stupid idea, and just lied about it.

Anyway, thanks for replying.  If you want something with building, try Terraria.

bye!

@PodXCOM Yeah, cheers for the link. I hate being negative about a developer and their hard work, especially when their product hasn't released, but I do have the suspicion that this one is missing the mark somewhat.

There are enough genre/gameplay changes that this probably isn't a game that I'd enjoy playing any way now.

 (late reply, sorry)

Yeah, they did.

The funny thing is,  that space sim had real Base Building and research. This Bureau game, however, is only about shooting. If you are going to play this game, please buy it used.
