hmmm... I really enjoyed Cryptic's City of Heroes, that is, until they abandoned any upgrades to the game what-so-ever. Then Champions looks to have done about the same thing. I'd be hesitant to pick up another Cryptic monthly pay-to-play game until it had established itself.
I would hope the fact that you can (VERY EASILY) defeat a borg cube so early in the game, when in the series just one could mow staight through an entire fleet, will serve as a sure sign of how bad and simplestic this game is ...
its no wow or eve, but its still fun. the graphics are quite a bit better than what you see in the preview video. I thought I was gonna be disappointed but hunted for a beta key, and after playing for 12 hours, I'm hooked.
Klingon Academy had much better explosions. Overall i don't find the graphics very impressive. Certainly not as impressive as X3:Reunion. Why can't Star Trek Games in general be made to be with standards as high as Star Wars games ?
This is going to be good if you invest time in it and stick around for the company to make updates along the way. In case you don't remember many mmorg games started in the rough (ie - WOW). Not to say it will be that good, but if people are willing to try and give it chance it will grow like anything.
Before we could seek out...stuff, we needed to sign our finacial life over to Crypitc. Sorry gonna wait till SWOR
To get into this game, you have to play it longer than just the tutorial and early levels. I have been playing open beta and while it does have its bugs, the gameplay gets alot harder, funner, tactical, and enjoyable. The puttering here and there missions can get a little frustrating, but with a few fixes on the part of Cryptic (which I read they are planning)... they should be fun. If you get past learning curve, the easy and fairly dull tutorial, and start getting to the extensive customizability of your ship, the story driven episodes, and the immersion into Star Trek experience, then this game rocks.
People complain regardless how good a game is. If the combat is either too slow or too fast depends on the persons perspective. I can only say beam me up Scotty.
might be a nice alternative to eve online, at least for a bit, then probably get sucked right back in to eve
im surprised by how bad this game looks.i was thinking about getting this but after seeing the old republic, this game is not woth its price
So far being in open beta this game is alot of fun and you don't really need to be a trekky to have fun with this game. I let my sister boyfriend play on my 2nd account that is in open beta and he never played a mmo before and only really plays FPS games and he said it was alot of fun and willing to get it.
The video did pretty much some up the game as I have been playing since closed beta. Its a great game if you are a Trekky, but people might find it lacking if you are not much of a Star Trek fan. I think the best part right now is the starship fights. The away missions, however, can be fun but a bit small. Explorable areas are not that big and most so far are inside a space station or a base on the planet. There has only been two that was on a planet outside of a base. One was a Vulcan escort mission and the other Talking to miniers to see what they are grumbling about. But maybe later content is improved as I can only commentt on content up to rank 9. I am not much of a PvP fan, so I wont comment on it except by saying, most enjoy the ground fighting over the Starship fighting. My recommendation if you are even thinking about buying it is to try to get into open beta or get a buddy key after its release. This game is a like it or hate it. Doesnt seem to have an in between. I like, only because I am a star trek fan.
Stargate, Stawars and StarTrek. All these STAR mmorpgs are going to flop so hard... what a pity. They have the same niche market on the MMORPG front, games that require immense amount of investment and that stooped growing like it was back in 2006 and now began shrinking.
This video was very informative, in that it showed me what I was trying to find out about this game: whether or not I would actually want to play this game. Being that I am not a trekkie and have a high standard for what games I play, I will be passing on this. But for star trek fans and those who can enjoy a game with mediocre production values I can see how they are excited for it.
Those melee attacks look pretty amazing. /sarcasim :-( Just providing my honest feedback(incomplete feedback but honest non the less). Sometimes I think people put to much emphasis on labeling people fanboys and such. As a gamer I don't care who makes the game as long as it's fun. I will be happy to give it a chance if there is a trial after is ships.
I'm playing the Beta and this is the most fun Ive ever had in an MMO. Admittedly I'm not much of an MMO player but it's nice to see one that atuclly uses physics and positioning tactics instead of spamming a single button. Wasnt much of a Trek fan but playing this game certainly has revived my interest. Ship Tactics are solid and really make the game feel strategic and intense. Quinto's Voice acting is bad, but it's only in the tutorial that you hear him. Great game, buyin the collectors edition now.
Gentlemen, if you're looking for that "next MMO" but balance your MMO addiction precariously (wife is cool with it, but NOT cool with jumping from MMO to MMO to MMO...) STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME!!! Star Trek Online is one of the single worst MMOs I've ever played, and I have the utmost respect for Cryptic as a studio (I played both COH and CO). Champions Online was released in a far more "Fun" state than this game. I've played free MMO's that are better and grab your attention with more vigor than STO. Where do I start...the initial questline is the most boring (in execution) that I've ever seen in any MMO (it makes "run here, touch that, run here, touch 3 of that") actually MORE boring than in previous MMOs. I wouldn't normally care about voice acting, but it's actually so bad and uninspired the teacher from Farris Bueler's Day Off looks like a motivational speaker! The ship combat is even boring (the graphics are nice however). Again, the single most unpolished, boring MMO I've ever played--and I've played at least 20 MMOs over the past 13 years.
I am really interested in this game, and even going for the $300+ price tag for the CE and Preorder with a Lifetime membership. Good job Gamespot for the heads up, I only wish you would give some open minded opinion on the game as you experienced it, so I might give my final decision on a price tag worth a whole new gaming system (console). =/ I just can't decide.
