One, hasn't there already been a number of study's that have shown that video games actually decrease stress in children?
Two, Americans can definitely count on their Congress to act aggressively. Rationally, however, is another story....
Most mentally ill kids can't play a video games. And if they managed to play more than 10 minutes the controller would be thrown at the TV and it would be ... all over.
We need to be more careful with our mentally ill. I know it sucks for them to be born that way but it also sucks for a child to be born with an abnormal heart with 3 days to live. So when I say careful, we have to make sure they don't have access to guns, knives, samurai swords, hair dryers+water.
There has been a lot of "Blamestorming" about the shootings with gun control taking most of the blame. Would a normal person with a gun kill all those children? Would a normal person with a gun that just played Call of duty kill all those children? Would a crazy guy with a sword kill people after watching "The Last Samurai w/ Tom Cruz(2003)"? Yes! and it happened.
The point is... it's not the guns, it's not the video games, it's the "Crazy's". Maybe we need to be reminded/enlightened that Mental illness is a Disease and it needs to be treated and controlled.
What counts as a violent video game? A game with a lot of gore? A game where people die? A game where people get hurt in any way? I assure you that there is violence in every god damn game and piece of media on the market.
While I definitely don't agree with this senator, I still think that 11 year olds are mature enough to play most M rated games, like GTA (except the Hot Coffee mod in San Andreas, which lets you have sex). But still - if parents don't consider their kids mature enough to play these games, then they shouldn't buy them.
Why don't we study how Psychopaths get ideas from reading books and movies!?!
Its just another form of media with information that cab be processed for good or evil.
Does the library have a rating system other then Adult and all? I don't see a PG13 rating on books.
How about a study as to why a parent would have all those firearms around her autistic son, and took her son on trips to a shooting range as a family activity.
Hasn't this been done? You could search on Google and find 300 of these studies. Why waste more tax payer money?
Video games make me LESS violent. They make me feel good and calm my state of mind. Real life and my sucky job make me want to kill people.
Stupid....... society should be looking on making awareness/support groups for personality disorders and autism, which the shooter suffered.
Stop trying to point fingers at the invisible video game enemy and look at yourself and what you have done for society.... which is nothing.
Just finished a blops 2 session, might go take out 100 people in my local Tesco..........In reality, I've absolutely no intention in doing that, in fact it makes me a little sick just thinking about it. Kinda proves really that it's not the games and media we choose to partake in that effects us, it's the stability of ones mind. If your sick in the head then you'll no doubt end up doing something sick regardless of what you've watched or played. If anything they need to look into making it easier to spot these sick people before they do something stupid not just point the finger at a form of entertainment.
Perhaps consciousness and bullying ought to really be studied and the obvious lack of will power some people have.
Not seen any bills made to investigate stupidly violent and mass killing films like the Expendables....
So, the video game industry "have a respsonsibility to protect our children", huh? Riiiiiight… Because we all know that being a responsible parent is out of the question.
Video games don't make people violent. Stupid people like HIM do.
Quickly throw our money at something that doesn't need to be investigated! How completely and utterly pointless... I can honestly say I am not suprised how ignorant these politicians really are. How are the kids getting their hands on these rated M games in the first place. If they cannot handle them or they aren't mentally stable they shouldn't be playing them in the first place. The parents are also partially to blame for this because there is no reason in hell they should have these rated M games until they are more mature. What about other forms of entertainment then? The human race is doomed if video games are seriously this big of a problem in their eyes.
This guy needs to get a clue, Is anyone actually going to do something about the real problem? which is the way weapons are being distributed so easily in the USA.
Well I just wrote a letter and so did my wife to Sen Rockefeller of WV regarding the silly, wasteful, and distracting bill he proposed. I really believe he is just putting out a lot of silly stuff like this for more media attention in hopes of securing a democratic nomination for president in 2016, since he has been a senator/ politician for 50yrs he knows it is now or never.
Don't get me wrong in all that time he has not been in any scandals or built a bridge to nowhere and has served WV and America well. But like most people of that generation, something not understood is something to be afraid of- like rock and roll, rap, cold war, Canadians - it has served them well both in life and politically.
Like many politicians issuing a bill like this will gain favor and have no losses, since most gamers won't get off their asses to go vote. Still though it saddens me when a tragedy like this happens and our elected officials introduce something so distracting, divisive, and wasteful of our tax dollars, instead of something really helpful like stopping 24hr news channels from glorifying, justifying, and sensationalizing (ty spellcheck) school shootings. All it does is create copy cat killers, who feel the only way to end their pain is to take it out on the most weakest and vulnerable ones in our society- because they know it will be so well memorialized and immortalized on TV
*sigh* Are any of these games actually rated E or even T? I'm so worn out of hearing how "kids" are affected by M rated games. Why in the hell are they playing them? Retailers do not sell M rated games to 12 year olds. Their parents have to buy them. A better study would focus on these parents. I'm sure we'd quickly find that the type of parents who are buying M rated games for their 10 and 11 year old kids have a lot of other negatives as well - any of which could contribute to mental health and anger issues.
Another politician who will pretend that the real cause of gun violence in the USA is NOT the near instant availability of guns to just about anyone.
This is just a HUGE waste of resources. Nothing will change. Here's a thought. Instead of blaming violent games, TV, music, sports, guns, drugs, alcohol etc etc.. Blame the parents.
-- OR --
Believe it or not people like violence. Anywhere from actually fighting someone to shooting people on games. When you pass a wreck you can't honestly say you haven't looked. Because something violent happened, people may not have died but it doesn't take away that fact. No one wants to sit around and play a freaking care bear game where your objective is to save as many koala bears as possible. Or watch a show similar to the teletubbies all the time.
Hell look at it this way, you have a stressful day at work or something. Some people relieve it by playing shooters or VIOLENT video games. Possibly even smoking some MJ. Get your head out of your ass and stop being hypocritical. Work on that economy! There's a thought.
It happened with radio, it happened to movie theaters, it happened with television, and now it has to happen to video games. Every time a new medium of entertainment arrives, the old guard finds it easy to use it as the scapegoat for their society's shortcomings. The funny thing? When the next medium of entertainment arrives, whatever it may be, the people who defend video games now will likely be the ones trashing that new medium in the future.
It's not the video games that kill people, it's not the guns that kill people, it's people that kill people. Blaming guns and video games is NOT the answer. In fact, even if you regulate both, people will find a way to get both, even if illegal. I even own assault rifles like the ones used in shootings, and even other guns, but do you see me killing senselessly?
When everyone was mourning about the latest shooting, I wasn't. It's gonna happen as long as people are alive on earth. No reason to cry and blame, when the next week, something just as similar will happen.
I've played VIOLENT video games and watched VIOLENT movies since I was 3 and I don't have the urge to go and kill everyone in sight. If you're gonna push for ban against both, why not ban DISEASES, HEIGHTS, ELECTRICITY, INJURIES and EVERYTHING ELSE that can hurt people. That's the answer, take everything away and find something else to whine about.
Go find you some more tax dollars to spend, democrats. Not like you don't have enough already. When you take away everything else, your money can't save you. You had better be ready to pick up the pieces.
He's a Rockefeller. His family is, and always has been, Scrooge McDuck rich. What the hell does HE care about pissing away millions of tax dollars on another useless video games=violence study? Just another rich, ignorant white old codger who's too f'ing lazy to Google violent crime statistics on his own. If he had, he'd notice a monumental decline in violent crime since around the Mortal Kombat 2 era.
But you know, kids were horrifically killed in a terrible tragedy, and pathetic politicians lap that stuff up like mothers milk. Scapegoats must me sacrificed, tax dollars be damned :D
Mario Party 9's to blame, imo. Stupid RNG party games are enough to drive ANYONE into mindless fits of violence!
Once all these OLD FOGEYS go the way of the dinosaur and are replaced by politicians from our generation, then the proper catalyst for all this violence will be brought to light.
This makes a ton of sense. How about we put some blame on these stupid parents!
a) Most states have gun laws requiring you to lock your gun in a safe, some even say away from the ammo. This can't prevent everything as kids can be crafty/know where parents hide stuff.
b) These violent games are 18+ so don't blame the games, blame the parents for buying it for the whining kids. Buy them pokemon or something.
Oh yeah... first it was Marylin Manson... Now it's video games! You know, if I were to see what happens in GTA in real life, I'd have a nervous breakdown. Adam Lanza had a personality disorder, and his father and brother say he never played games...
The good news is that our hobby only has to wait out the current "old guard" politicians who can't figure out e-mail and equate video games with devil worship. Slowly but surely, they'll be replaced with the next generation of statesmen who grew up on Xbox and PlayStation. Of course, this next generation will have to find some other new social medium upon which to blame all of society's ills...
Politicians love the sound of $$, it'll take a whole lot of tax payer money to figure this one out.....ha ha ha ha
@Lotus-Edge He wants the study probably to create jobs for his friends.
@BrentJohn I was violent before I played "violent" video games... I would pretend my dinosaur toys were real and I'd go, RAAWWRRR *NOM NOM NOM* *Bite bite bite* and the other dinosaur would die.... Then there were toy guns and....wait.. none of this stuff was real....
@jenovaschilld I applaud you for writing a letter to this senator. This is so stupid. Our government needs to stop wasting our tax dollars and focus on the important things. They need to get their priorities straight!
@SeaFireConcept It's actually people WITH guns that kill people. Sure you could kill someone with a spoon if you caught them unawares but good luck going on a murder spree with that spoon, probably take you 20 years. Control guns or preferably get rid of them and this will stop happening, murders will still happen but this type of "I hate the world so I'll kill a bunch a people" will be stopped dead in it's tracks (no pun intended). Unless of course you take away the guns and make hand grenades legal. Would be quite fun actually, I can just see all those gun lovin' people throwing grenades at each other - awesome. As for games, as has been said before, restrictions are there for a reason. From my experience not many parents let their children play those M rated games, some do but there will always be idiots. Children generally have a far less stable grasp of reality and how it is different to imagination because they just haven't been alive long enough. Common sense is needed here but I'm not holding my breath.
@SeaFireConcept Not to be a Debbie Downer, but, how do you ban diseases, heights, and injuries?
@SeaFireConcept Well you can take electricity away and go back to the old days where there was no tv no guns and you will still see people killing people its just in human nature to do it but some people are just to dumb to get it in their heads people will always kill each other no matter what don't need a gun to kill someone and games and tv def doesn't kill people heck guns don't even kill people people kill people and that's the bottom line right there.
@SeaFireConcept I agree with how ridiculous putting regulation on vidya games are, but I think it's morally right for you -to care- when people die and its been brought to your attention, even if it happens every hour of the day, all around the world. It's apathy towards the life of other humans like that which makes the ignorant, media-collared sheeple think video games turn people into desensitized killers, and thus think it needs regulation and restrictions.
@SeaFireConcept Banning guns is not the answer? Tell that to the Japanese who have nearly eliminated gun violence, then go tell the Canadians who have 10x less than Americans. When you're done doing that, stop by the rest of the EU and ask them why they also have 10 - 100x fewer gun related deaths that Americans.
@SeaFireConcept So much truth in this. This guy, for what it's worth, enforces his edicts, like any member of government, by force i.e. violence. Resist them long enough and they turn violent. So the hypocrisy here is insane. Nevermind that people will get around stupid regulations, there is the cost of enforcing them and the costs they impose on society due to the fact that the government is constitutionally incapable of economic calculation since it doe not turn a profit or suffer losses. It simply steals. If anything, there are studies showing that these games REDUCE the propensity to violence, since the kid takes it out on pixels and not people. Democrats and republicans are vulture scum, eager to capitalise on each tragedy as it befits their cynical agendas. This guy should be ignored.
@edgewalker16 No, then they'll start blaming virtual reality, which is obviously the next entertainment medium, or at least it better be. Also, why would they cast blame on bad parenting when parents can vote? I'm pretty sure butthurt parents is a larger demographic than vocal gun owners and concerned gamers.
@Tirshek Parents are seldom held to account for the poor job they do raising their kids. Same with public schools, where most kids are forced to go for most of their childhoods.
@hrst1 lol I can see it now. You're driving down the road and and suddenly someone drives in front of you and breaks, gets out, and walks over to your door and opens it. This person punches you and apologizes while dragging you out. The hijacker then tosses a grenade out the window and drives away, while 10 police cars go flying after him/her without regard for anyone's safety! You either die in the grenade explosion or proceed to run after the car for a short distance before you stop and respawn into another vehicle, closer to the hijacker.
Real life pedestrian riot code anyone? XD
@Scourgejoe Makes me glad that people don't live forever.
@Elhan They don't care about the cost, because they will always have tax dollars. They will always find another exploit to get money even if it means screwing the american people.
