Reality Check - The Witcher 3 and Taking Drugs Before Battle!

The Witcher Geralt of Rivia is no stranger to drugs, mainly because he uses them to give him an advantage in combat. But have we puny human beings ever done the same?

Me and my mates used to take Modafinil when we had to stay up late to do uni work!

If that drug causes an increase of neurotrasmitters in the brain, I would think there would be a major crash afterwards.  Not all drugs affect everyone the same way too.

thsoe drugs that the military use to make soldiers stay awake for 60-90 hours must make the soldiers completely insane when they come out of battle or come home.

Nice episode.  Got to get my hands on this modafinil so I can stop using red bull like drinks to stay up late playing games.

Also both the Luftwaffe pilots and the Panzer crews were administered drugs during WWII. Drugs that were first used by their crazy boss and approved by his equally crazy doctror, Theodor Morell.

Datura would be very welcome and amusing, would add some funny side quests and hallucinations. If you have never heard of it, look it up; you wont be disappointed. Most interesting thing I've read in my life.

There's a fun story that German soldiers in the first world war were issued MDMA as a hunger suppressant. It's probably a myth though. It would be a pretty big dampener on aggression!

Steroids, help of course. But i have had fights with and without booze/drugs I found with booze im more likely to get in a frenzy and get into fights , it also allows you ti bypass the body's flight and fight  system which can literally make you freeze up in a fight . the down side with Booze was that you dont see whats going on clearly everything is a blur, so against a good fighter you get schooled. Without booze i  i would be more focused and aware but the adrenaline can be quite high so you may not attack with conviction.

I have found no street drug  from weed, opiate or crack to help any in fight. One dose of pure cocaine may allow you bypass the fight or flight along with a small drink, but who stops there? Plus the cardiovascular killing effect of those drugs make it not worth it. As soon as you pass one dose of pure coke it makes you too paranoid.

The best thing to do before a fight is get your self in to a rage by being in a party of like minded people whom you trust with your life, that is the best way i found to prepare for a fight. There is no better way. Drugs are not the answer. African generals use drugs on their toy soldiers though with great success, but its not needed.

I like to think what Geralt is doing is not taking street drugs, but steroids.and performance enhancers like caffeine/ athemapatimene/preworkout for extra speed, cortisol/ibuprofen for blocking of pain, carrot juice to see in dark (jk):P etc.

I always loved taking psilocybin before getting into a rage induced fist fight with my enemies.

@Cam,

In the books - written by Andrzej Sapkowski - Geralt drinks potions rarely, because they are poisonous even for him. Normal man would die immediately after drinking such caustic substance. Geralt can use its potential for fight, but it is still toxic for him. In fact elixirs are slowly killing him. In games there are no long-term side effects. In short stories Geralt doesn't make potions, because he's not an alchemist, priest or sorcerer. This is another reason, why he drinks potions rarely. Also in the books Geralt uses several elixirs as an antidote after getting a wound. From "The Sword of Destiny":

'We're on the road, in my cart. Speak no more, sir, and don't move. We must cross the forests and find a healer in the human settlements. The bandage we have on your leg is of little help. The blood won't stop flowing...’

‘Yurga...’

‘Yes, sir?’

‘In my casket... a flask... sealed with green wax. Break the seal and give it to me... in a bowl. Wash the bowl well and let no one touch the flask... if you value your life... Hurry, Yurga... Damn, how this cart shakes... The flask, Yurga...’

[...]

'Don't get up, sir. I need to change your dressing, because the wound is dirty and your leg is horribly swollen. By the gods, it looks awful... We need to find a healer as soon as possible...’

‘To hell with healers!’ groaned the witcher. ‘Give me my casket, Yurga. Yes, this flask. Pour it directly on the wound. Oh, bloody hell! It's nothing, go on... Ouch! Good. Dress it and cover me...’

‘It's swollen, sir, the whole thigh... And you're stricken with fever...’

‘To hell with the fever... Yurga?’

‘Yes, sir?’

‘I forgot to thank you...’

and yes here the mercs use a lot of drugs, some of which are not very good for "combat" cause they can impair judgment but here the warlords don't give a Sh*T, as long as they have there drones

Meth-amphetamine was widely used by the Germans and the Allies in WW II to keep soldiers and aircrews awake and suppress feelings of dread. It was added to cigarettes and chocolate rations amongst other things. Its not too surprising - you would need to be on something to face going a daylight bombing raid on Germany where the casualty rates were very high, like the US bomber pilots did.

Shh, dont say it too loudly. The game will be banned in Australia not because he bangs 300 women, but because he drinks magical potions before battle that are like drugs.

Some Pre-workouts works for short period of time really well. I use it sometimes while driving at night time to keep myself awaked and focused. It also boost your strenght by few % (so they say) for your workouts. But from what I experienced it only works few times. Human body adapts to it really quickly so you need to give it a break for 2-3 weeks after using it for 2-3 weeks to see any results.

Great episode!

Think I read that when the USA did their 'Shock and Awe' invasion of Iraq in the 1990's, many American soldiers stayed awake (mostly) for up to 7 days, and even with drugs such as caffeine or amphetimines I find that impossible to comprehend.

Another smart ep, good job!

Nice vid Cam.

But lets not forget that even if you obtain a proper amount of active ingredient its impossible to know since each person has a different immunological system, Geralt is a rarity even among Witchers he can take far more drugs than the others, its the reason he has white hair and pale skin.

Not surprised in the least that my stupid US govt is a drug dealer. They just don't want the individual to be a drug dealer. See they like to have all the profits.

About sleep, I suck at shooters when I have not slept well vs when I have. When I have slept well I'm can be at the top of the leader boards pretty consistently(no matter the shooter game).  But the complete opposite is true when I have had very little sleep.

The whole bezerker rage thing also probably had a lot to do with higher testosterone levels. Its a proven fact that when in life threatening situations for long periods of time like being in prison your testosterone levels will rise. Also all the chemicals in our air food and water lower testosterone levels. Not to mention the normal diet lowers testosterone levels. These guy's going into bezerker mode is probably a lot like a power lifter going insane before he lifts 1000 plus pounds. Im not talking about roid rage or anything stupid like that. Im talking about the known fact that testosterone raises aggression levels and gives you the feeling of being near invincible. So I would assume back than their testosterone levels were probably 3 to 4 times higher than the normal mans. Which still wouldn't even equal close to the amount of testosterone that is in a professional bodybuilders system. But it would be enough to make a difference when it came to getting in a psychological mind state that made you have a controlled feeling of going bezerk. It is all very similar to the term gang mentality.

Being awake and pushing your brain for 90 hours straight just seems like a terrible idea, especially if that drug doesn't show any immediate side effects.

We know that sleep deprivation causes brain damage. A few years later, you might end up with neurological complications.

This was a nice episode.

Just to let you know, the Somali's used to chew a sort of green herb (don't know the name) before going to fight the American's that made them super aggressive.

And take it from someone who has used every drug out there they are correct. I dont think they should be illegal and in the hands of criminals, but that's another topic, but  after 15 years of using i found one universal truth drugs are bad, the fact that i feel like I cant live without them now is also a another topic.

@lilflipp Bullets also have a nasty tendency to cause some neural complications.

Better to endure the negative side effects of sleep deprivation than make a fatal error on the battlefield due to sleepiness.

lilflipp

@noah364 @lilflipp Oh no, I'm not arguing that at all. I'm also assuming that if you are required to stay up for 90 hours it's probably because something pretty grave is happening.

I'm just saying you know.

lilflipp
lilflipp

@roganth @KEDERZ Yup. Basically used to keep people awake and stimulated and not get hungry. But when you come down the side effects are probably what was responsible for the aggressiveness. Insomnia and lack of concentration, which added to the previous sleep deprivation and not eating, that makes people very grumpy and impatient.
