@Slash_out This is the today Generetion of gaming. Warren Spector knows this and said, "f**k everything and everyone, I make games because I love writing stories, i love making games for everyone wants challenge himself, not to make happy those stupid little kids."
Man, I thought we were long past this stigmatized stage of gamers. I guess, big publishers, whom mainly focused on the mainstream have deflated the image of gaming to its immature infancy again. Not too surprising really.
@Ravenchrome He's not. Warren Spector is a gamer, he wants everybody to experience his games. If you watch Bonus Round on Game Trailers, Spector was interested in putting this on the Move as well but it was Disney Interactive's decision to keep it a Wii exclusive. (PAX Keynote: Warren Spector)
I agree with mister Warren. And finding a way to educate others gamers, to find a way to get better games, with challenge and not just casual cr*p. Because so far with how things are going, I can't help but think that reaching a broader audience IS bad for us. Look at all the cr*p on the wii, and all the cr*p that's coming on the x360 and PS3 with kinect and Move which are basically aiming at the casual gamers. I don't mind more people playing games, I mind when those bigger audiences have an impact on the games I play. Now instead of one big game from a dev, they'll split that budget into 5 and make 5 crappy games. Instead of a great RPG we have a party games, a rope jumping game, a fresbee games and whatever they can think of. We have 5 years old level puzzle solving. We have games that have an option to play without the player (recent nintendo addition). I mind when the licenses I love are changed to appeal to casual gamers (Gothic for exemple). Where is the challenge? Where is the pleasure? If I want a game that play itself I'll watch a movie. A game is meant to be played. And playing means challenge. Otherwise if there is no challenge, why not just push a button for each level? It's easier tha tway isn't it?
"A platform for letting players express how smart they are".. Exactly.. what I hate most about the dumbing down and lack of choice in games is that it doesn't let us use our brain to surmount virtual obstacles in a lateral way. Our "choice" is a choice between a few essentially identical guns, our "problem-solving" has degenerated to mean using a particular item at a certain location. Games should mirror reality -- and our ability to survive in the real world is tied to our lateral thinking, not by cycling through 1-5 cookie-cutter solutions.
btw guys and gals.. Don't forget to go to the site he mentioned. We need to protect our rights as gamers!!!
Excellent keynote, Warren is right in the sense that the acceptance of a medium just takes time, and that history certainly does repeat itself.
This guy knows what he is talking about. However there is only one thing I disagree with casuals or majority of them cannot be talked to. They do not understand what we grew up with and how games work. Majority of them are the ones who enjoy there mindless movies and television shows and so it translates into their games. You cannot reason with a Cod or Warcraft fan because they don't understand. They have blinders on. It isn't that thier fanboys they just don't get it.
I don’t knw what the purpose of this speech was and I don’t knw if am a 'casual' or 'hardcore' gamer coz I spend the right amount of time playing the games I love. This speech is something I don’t understand 100% but what am trying to say is that I feel much better about being a gamer now
Every gamer, young and old, should watch this keynote. Warren Spector, aside from being a fantastic orator and brilliant human being, is also right about current generation video games. Such an amazing keynote. Thank you GameSpot for uploading this.
HELL YEH. My first major rpg was Deus Ex:IW and I loved it. Now that I'm older and have access to a PC I've discovered it's "hardcore" predecessor, Deus Ex 1. I played them both and can enjoy them both for their own unique style. I had never even heard of the term consolization until a die-hard fan made up the term on a forum simply for the cause to demean the casual player. Labels like 'casual' and 'hardcore' on gamers and people in general only seeks to put others down and that kind of "master race" attitude, frankly, sucks!
you heard the man bethesda!, offer us something better than oblivion/fallout 3 or offer us a mouse rpg, you're choice.
@Ravenchrome He works at a Disney studio. Disney publishes games for other platforms too, like the TRON game coming soon, and the last Turok game.
THIS GUY IS F'ING BRILLIANT... BIG Publishers PLEASE Listen to this guy! Get Over CoD: LMNOP, HALO: XYZ, Final Fantasy 76, and GTA5:Bagdad... etc
Warren Spector never dissapoints, his presentations are always inspiring for me. It's a shame though that I never got to play most of those great games in the past. I wasn't sure about Epic Mickey for quite a while but now I'm kinda excited to see how it'll turn out. :)
I love this guy's games; Deus Ex and Thief are awesome! They have not really gotten the respect it deserves. Now they might:)
Warren Spector is a legend. Everybody needs to watch this. This is very important to a new growing culture. I really need to go to these conventions and hear each special guests keynote speech.
Warren Spector - a game-design legend. He's definitely one of the people who founded some part modern gaming as it is today, and is one of the reasons that the fps/rpg genre could get so big. Respect.
