Despite Fortnite And PUBG Success, Microsoft Won't Make A Battle Royale Game - GameSpot Daily

Xbox boss Phil Spencer says Microsoft probably won't make its own battle royale game, while a crew of PUBG cheaters finally gets caught.

Battle royale seems to be a talking point in every conversation that takes place in the video game industry, and the latest has Xbox boss Phil Spencer saying that it isn't likely Microsoft will make a game in the genre. Spencer said he'd rather support the already-popular games such as Fortnite and PUBG than make one because it's the hot thing right now.

"I'd rather support unless we find something special in [first party] that's a different take," he said. Of course, while Microsoft likely won't make a battle royale game, there could still be modes in its first-party games that are at least similar to battle royale. I joked back at Sea of Thieves' launch that the pirate game would be perfect for a battle royale mode, and while that doesn't seem super likely, franchises like Halo, Crackdown, and Gears of War could be a better fit. We discuss this story and the rest of the biggest gaming news in today's episode of GameSpot Daily.

In other battle royale news, PUBG publisher Bluehole announced on Steam that 15 people have been arrested and fined for their involvement in PUBG hacking programs. Bluehole provided translated information from the arresting authorities, revealing that the suspects have been fined 30 million RMB (or $5.1 million). The news also revealed that the programs these people were involved with included Trojan horse viruses, which could have extracted users' information illegally.

Speaking of horses, Red Dead Redemption 2 is set for its next trailer, which arrives this Wednesday, May 2. We run down everything we know so far in today's episode.

Our last two stories are shooter-centric. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 looks like it might bring back the Pick 10 feature, which was dropped in Call of Duty: WWII. The Pick 10 gave you 10 points to allocate for your loadout. One of the things this allowed you to do in previous games is go all-in on one weapon if you didn't feel like taking a secondary firearm.

Black Ops 4 might not be the only shooter coming from publisher Activision-Blizzard. A Blizzard job listing suggests that the company could be working on a new competitive shooter. However, we don't know what this "unannounced project" is, and we can't be sure it will even see the light of day. Either way, we go into all the details in the video above.

That's what you'll find in this episode, but be sure to tune in every day of the week at 11 AM PST/2 PM EST/7 PM BST/4 AM AEST for another episode of GameSpot Daily. We cover the most exciting gaming news in 30 minutes or less or Microsoft will stop making games entirely.
