You really can't hate Nin for doing this. They make their main console cheaper for the holidays and release a handheld that targets a market that neither of the other console makers have even considered - they are going to make a killing cash wise -- too bad their game library can attract more older serious gamers in the same quantities.

@deafwing

"targets a market that neither of the other console makers have even considered"

The target audience for the 2DS are people who want a 3DS without the 3D capabilities. After all, why pay extra for a feature you won't use? The 2DS allows Nintendo to make a cheaper model of their handheld (it's cheaper to manufacture), and it allows customers to essentially buy a cheaper 3DS.

Can we all stop pretending that only kids are going to buy this. We know that people of all ages will get one. And we know that the 3D caused problems for people of all ages, not just kids. Claiming this is only for kids, in an attempt to protect young, developing eyes and nothing else, is ridiculous.

@Scorpion1813 @deafwing ... really, so why did Nintendo go on record saying that it was targeted for "8 and younger" ... I'm lost. I know English is not my first language but c'mon man - how am I reading that wrong?

@Scorpion1813 @deafwing I don't own a 3DS, but there are some games I want to play, so I'm probably getting a 2DS. I'm my opinion pretty much everything is better about it. I don't have to pay for unwanted 3D, get better ergonomics and a better price.

Nintendo also said that a price-drop isn't the answer for the Wii U.
Two weeks later look what happened.

Also, check out the ad for the 2DS. There are 3 adults and only 1 kid playing the 2DS. If the target audience was "8-and-younger" ONLY, they would only show 8-and-younger kids playing it.

@zeusbark I think Nintendo is doing fine as of right now, but the reason of concern is that they are not making too much profit as earlier. They are probably going to sell well with the 3ds line, and even the Wii U will do ok, but I can not imagine it doing better than the ps4.

funny how the full potential of the PS4 will be realised in 3 or 4 years, yet there are some eggs that think the PS3 has nowhere reached its max powers yet, makes me laugh these so called "techies" while i the PS3 is not on its last legs, i'm pretty sure it doesn't get any better then what we've seen already

@DWalker131 Agreed. Especially with the shift to x86 architecture there's now no longer an incentive to push the boundaries of PS3 games when most of the big games from here on out will be ported from next- gen consoles.

Call me a child (I'm 23 for what it's worth) but I'm getting both the 2DS and Wii U when the price drop comes into effect. 2DS with Pokemon and Fire Emblem shouldn't cost more than £160 and the Wii U Wind Waker bundle should be roughly £200. Around £360 for the lot is value for money in my eyes. I never take my DSi XL out with me anyway (would get weird looks considering I'm practically a grown man playing games that people think are for 8 year olds).

Then next year once both PS4 and X1 have been reviewed to death I can make an informed purchase and get the one most practical for my needs. Win-win as far as I'm concerned. Good call by Nintendo (although I shudder to think what kind of loss they're making on the Wii U now).

@scurran007 @u1tradt I'd definitely be classed under 'hardcore' gamer. I think the fact that I'm a grown man playing the likes of Pokemon puts me in that category. Once you delve into it you soon realise there's much more to it than cute monsters.

In general terms, yes they do represent 'casual vs hardcore' to a certain extent. But there's a lot more for hardcore gamers to sink their teeth into on 3DS than you seem to be aware of. Along with the DS library I'd even say 2DS offers more for the hardcore gamer than does the Vita.

The 2DS sure is ugly, but I think I'll get it, it makes sense for me to do so, I want to play Pokemon X/Y, I don't want to play them in 3D and it's cheaper.

The only problem with the 2DS is the shape: it isn't very compact, and thus not very portable. And it doesn't look very comfortable to hold.

Other than that, it get's rid of the 3D capabilities nobody used and thus makes it cheap to both manufacture and buy. It can also play all DS and 3DS games, so you're not missing out if you don't have one of those already. And you don't have to waste money buying a Wii U in order to play Nintendo games.

To be honest, I never even considered buying a 3DS because I don't waste money on expensive gimmicks that I'm never going to use (thus I didn't buy a Wii or a Wii U either). The 2DS does away with that useless 3D gimmick, however, the design of it just sucks: It's very impractical, bulky, and looks like it's going to give kids carpal tunnel before they hit their teenage years.

@Scorpion1813 Looks can be deceiving. Nintendo have a good reputation when it comes to ergonomics. There have been no complaints about the size of the Wii U controller, in fact most reviews have praised how lightweight it is and that it is surprisingly suitable for extended gaming sessions.

And for them to come out with this (which is aimed at kids) do you honestly think they didn't factor in the consideration of weight before shipping the console? It's not in Nintendo's psyche to make such an obvious oversight, as a matter of fact it's not in Japan's psyche to be that inconsiderate and inefficient. They would be forced to commit seppuku if kids started complaining that it's too heavy for them.

Not to mention the fact that 3DS hardware is pretty lightweight to begin with. Both literally and technically speaking.

Just for the record, I never said it was heavy. But it certainly does look uncomfortable.

As for not being portable, I was referring to the shape and size of it. Try fitting that thing in your pocket. You'd need a backpack to carry it. Or carry it in your hands all day, thus being "impractical".

@u1tradt

"what else are you implying when you state that it will give kids carpal tunnel?"

That it looks bulky and uncomfortable, the things I actually said in the first place. I'm not making any hidden implications, and I don't have any hidden agendas. I say what I mean.

As for the rest of your comment, you just come off as a fanboy that can't take critisism for something you enjoy. Don't you get it: I was actually defending the 2DS where other people were slamming it as pointless and useless?! I was giving credit where it was due. And I was stating my opinion about what I personally feel is wrong with it. I'm not trying to justify not buying one, if anything I'm justifying other people actually getting one. Whether I'm getting one or not is irrelevant.

Don't agree with me? Fair enough. But to tell me my views are wrong and "irrelevant" just because you refuse to accept them is pathetic. What's also pathetic is that I'm trying to have a friendly discussion, and someone just has to come along and start making accussations and questioning my intentions.

And no, this is not aimed specifically for kids only. There are people on this site that are in their 20's or older that have already stated they want one. Heck, I'm even considering getting one. Not to mention the ads showing adults using a 2DS. If it was kids-only, then you'd only see kids using them in the ads.

"You want a foldable 3DS that will fit into your pocket? Go buy it, they still sell the bloody thing."

As I've already said, I don't spend money on expensive gimmicks. Why buy a 3DS when I can get a 2DS that's cheaper, and doesn't come with a gimmick that I, and many other people, won't use.

"This is aimed at a different type of customer. And you can be sure they will sell like hot cakes between October and January."

It's aimed at people who don't want 3D. The 3DS comes with 2D capabilities, but you still have to pay for the 3D capabilities. I hope it does sell well. I'm never said it won't. You're not reading my comments properly are you? I think you're letting your emotions get in the way of your better judgement. You're being too defensive for your own good.

@Scorpion1813 @u1tradt You never said it was heavy but what else are you implying when you state that it will give kids carpal tunnel? Come on dude.

And I doubt a 3DS could even fit into a 10 year old's pocket. They carry backpacks quite a lot anyway even outside of school (especially 5-10 year olds) so it's perfectly practical for the people it's aimed at.

Just because you're not going to get it doesn't make it an instant failure. I know you're looking for ways to justify why you're not getting it (hence all the silly criticism) but accept it for what it is.

You want a foldable 3DS that will fit into your pocket? Go buy it, they still sell the bloody thing. This is aimed at a different type of customer. And you can be sure they will sell like hot cakes between October and January. Your opinion is completely irrelevant.

@Scorpion1813 Yea, I really think things like this are just for kids anyway, most people don't have the time to play handheld video games once you surpass puberty. Nintendo only seems to be trying to sell to families and children these days. I would love to play Zelda but their systems just kinda suck overall

I too would love to play Zelda games, but there is no way I'm buying a console for one game / game series.

I think Nintendo would sell a lot more copies of their games if they were multiplatform. The fact that both their games and their console are losing money, and nobody is interested in the gimmicks anymore - they really need to change the way they do things.

Going multiplat is their best option and most people know it. Even if the Ninendo fanboys refuse to admit it.

Here is the thing I love most about console wars.. fanboys.. GS is full of them. Most of you fanboys need to go out and get a real job, that way you can afford to buy multiple systems. 300$ is not expensive. If you find that to be too much, you need to not be buying games and out looking for a better or second job. As far as the WiiU, it has some great titles you will not play anywhere else, so if you dont get it, you will be missing out. I am primary a PC gamer, so I am not a Nintendo fanboy, but the two games I finished this month were SR4 on the PC and Pikimin 3 on the WiiU.. both I had a ton of fun with. There is nothing wrong with the power of the WiiU.. it is designed to play the type of games Ninttendo makes, and it looks damn good doing it. It does not want to be a PS4 or Xbone.

If you have ever seen younger kids break off the top screen of a 3DS, you will understand the design. It is a good idea. It is not for everyone, but I can see why this would be great for some families.

Why not utilize PS4 power immediately? Can't understand that shit developers is pulling now days. Of course you use all the hardware power available to you. What's point of new hardware if you don't?`

But of course he was just trolling and speak all the things he doesn't know anything about.

You don't seem to get the point.

It's not about being able to use all the power, it's about being able to use all the power well.

Look at games on the PS2 when it first game out, and then look at games towards the end of it's life, such as FFX. Same with current-gen launch titles and games like GTAV.

Heck, just look at the difference between Oblivion and Skyrim.

Devs are able to pull more out of the hardware once they become familiar with it and build an engine that can take full advantage of it. At the start of a consoles life, devs are still using engines from previous-gen.

@Scorpion1813 @snaketus on the other hand, ps4 and xbone are both built on x86 instead of some custom architecture so the territory should be explored by now ?! im confused why it should take 4 years to perfect games on what is essentially a PC...

@Scorpion1813 @Fraesh besides, it's marketing. if GTA8 looks just the same as GTA7, what's the selling point besides "new and improved gameplay" it sound better if they sell it as "new and improved graphics and new and un-proved gameplay"

Well it usually takes double that amount of time to get the most out of a console. I think their announcement was to imply it's going to be easier, and won't take as long for devs to utilise it fully.

It's still not exactly a PC, and they will still require console dev kits in order to make games for the consoles. Porting will be a lot easier between both consoles and PC as their architecture is so similar. So there's no excuse for exclusives unless you're Microsoft / Sony (or the game is PC only).
