Graphics Comparison: New & Old Models in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor Beta
How would your hero look in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor? Take a look at the new and improved character models of (in order): Gnomes, Human (Female), Dwarves, Draenei (Male), Night Elf (Female), Undead (Male), Tauren (Male), and Orcs. Please take note that the game is currently still in beta, and dances are included in the last half of the video!
I think a lot of people saying that it doesn't look great are missing the point. These are character models that are upgraded without producing a hit on performance.
Every Blizzard game (especially WoW) is pretty much designed to be able to run on a slightly warmed potato so as to attract the largest possible user base.
i used to play wow for a while, and i very much enjoyed it. regardless of how old the graphics look, the world itself is awesome. i stopped playing years ago, but at least its standing strong. i honestly feel like it needs to go free to play. 40/50 bucks for expansions is kind ridiculous now, given that most of the expansions dont do much except add new areas, dungeons etc. i can assume it gets boring quick. But, i recently got guild wars 2, and its awesome as well. bought it on sale for 25 bucks, and i must say, im very impressed. I cant run in on the highest settings, only on custom, and it still looks good. it has the traditional mmo aspects, but with a twist. cant go wrong with no subscription.
Yeah, the head of the female human is a bit too small.
Otherwise, I like the improvements, especially to Tauren ;P
It's nice they still pour some love into this game, and I'll be there when Draenor comes out, but I'm eagerly awaiting the next gen MMORPG from Blizzard!
I feel like I was transported in to strip clubs during the Night Elf, Human and Orc Female sections...
Still over the top gigantic hands with little heads that looks like a 2005 graphics card should be able to handle.
I've seen better graphics on the Wii U.................................
Some people say it still looks bad, other say it looks too good for WoW art style. This is why I feel bad for devs. But then again gamespot is plagued with trolls.
Undead looks exactly the same...
Regardless, as the comment below states, there are games on the market that look amazing and do character customization the right way. This is amateur by comparison, I honestly expect more out of Blizzard.
Really, that's all graphical improvements they can deliver after over 10 years... Take a look around how some Korean MMORPGs look like this days. Check Black Desert character creation as an example.
The most noticeable about the character models are facial animations and texture density. Especially in face, hands and probably feet, but it was not show. I'm very, very curious about the Troll update, the trolls have always looked way too bad. Need rest of the models on show damnit! >.<
Well I think this is a great way to prolong the life of WoW since its a game designed to run on as many computers possible.
They could release WoW2 but that would result in people saying "original WoW was soooooo much better" just like they say "early early days of WoW were soooo much better" when in reality WoW was always a mediocre mmo in a ugly shell.
If they released World of Starcraft along side WoW and made it a more serious and graphic intensive mmo aimed at a more hardcore community like most of us I think that would be fantastic.
Worst expansion ever. It's more like a crappy DLC than an expansion. There aren't new races, or a new class, or a new city. WoW is dead
Yeah, if this is the best they can do, not impressive. Models actually look the same, it's their textures that look a tad more detailed. They move the same and look the same in proportion, so how is that "modeling" changes? It's texture map changes, not model changes. In other words, I see no higher polygon counts or smoother lines. Overall, who cares?
Why is the head on the human so small compared to the body? It looks way out of place. Also, the forearm for the humans and a few of the other models looks very disproportionate. Pretty sad that you can't get it right on a model redesign.
when i see face experssions in games like witcher 2 3 and TESO and many many others...
this just feels half -assed to me
Seems like the focus was the hands and head, especially the facial animations. Which makes sense considering the rest of the body will likely be covered up by the same crappy armor models and textures.
They could certainly have made more drastic changes, but I think the issue is you can't take a super hi-def character and drop them into a less than hi-def world. They would stick out like a sore thumb. I imagine they were battling that balance of making them better and still making them fit into the game.
I think the largest difference are the Dwarves and Tauren so far.
i feel pity for the addicted users of this game.
its 2014 and they are still playing a game from 2004.
@BuBsay You fanboys will come up with any sorry excuse to defend this nonsense. For this being a hugely marketed and advertised feature of the new expansion, it sure is a whole lot of nothing.
@Great50 I would of loved to hear Tunak Tunak Tun With the dreanai But it was pretty good
@ggregd They screwed up the scaling of her head for this preview. The final product should look much better. And they really need to add a little more booty to the Night Elf female, considering who they modeled that dance after.
@zizo490 u and me both
@mirakodus123 It's not suppose to be too significant otherwise it'll hit many systems in framerate, and when there's 40-60 people battling it can dip pretty low. One of the reasons that so many play wow also is due to its easy playability even on oldest machines. The animations and models are very improved. Unless you don't pay attention to detail you won't notice. The models are smoothed out, skin has much more 3d detail, and the face actually moves mouth, eyes, and brows to show expression, something that is very nice. Bliz could've easily went step further but than they would lose the art style as well as some of the consumers who have older systems, which is a lot. And this is why I love WoW, it can achieve incredible scenery with graphics that don't stress your system, they use harmony in combination of colors, lighting, and texture which avoids anything they're not trying to be.
@JimmyCos "Wow is dead" no you mis spelled HalfLife.
@JimmyCos There are new "cities" and your own customizable base.
@JimmyCos Yeah. WoW is dead. It's just the most sucessful MMORPG that ever existed. Right.
"Wow is dead"
Yeah, I haven't heard that one before. I definitely didn't hear it in 2007, 2008, 2010 or 2012. Nope.
@vadagar1 considering teso died within a month and witcher isnt even an mmo lmao
@vadagar1 It's not wise comparing WoW art style to Witcher and TESO. It's like making WoW with CRYENGINE graphics which would completely defeat the lore feeling of WoW. Plus the reason WoW also has a large subscribtion base is because people can play it on older machines. Graphics are not all to games, and if they are than GW2, TESO, and many other beautiful MMOs would've taken over, but this is far from the truth.
@eze_sl89 Age of the game has nothing to do with the fun of the game. I still play Diablo 2 and Ultima Online. World of Warcraft is just not fun for me. The formula is not an MMORPG it's a MMOGRIND.
@eze_sl89 Yeah, just like those losers still playing Half-Life 2.
Pointing out the obvious makes me a fanboy? Hell I stopped playing years ago, not a very good fanboy am I?
@stormed81 Name one successful, continuing MMO with a large subscription base that doesn't require a grind. Go on, I can wait.
@simsumre @Max_160 @mirakodus123 That's how it's been all of this previous generation and all it will be this generation, consoles limitations are what is holding graphics back. Gaming has went from a hobby for people with money and time to the masses of meme spouting (i know this is ironic, me saying this) plebians who only have 5 minutes to stand in the fire. You can't expect this game that was always made for the lesser caste of people to suddenly improve their graphics ten fold.
You get minor improvements due to demand but not overly so.
You get all of your abilities reduced to console levels of complexity.
Stripped down garrisons.
Very few raids and dungeons, maybe not the least in the history of the game but it's a sad amount given the success and manpower they have compared to 10 years ago.
Call it Warlords of Draenor and charge 50 dollars for it. This "expansion" has filler written all over it.
Who says that everyone has access to new gaming equipment? You?
I'm not going to sit around and argue why grinding isn't my idea of gaming. Clearly you think you are having fun grinding away in WoW. You also seem to think longevity directly correlates to the fun factor. I find it kind of amusing how, over time, MMORPG has been shortened to MMO - as the true RPG aspects of these games have disappeared as well.
I feel sad for the WoW lemmings that never had the chance to experience the magic of raiding a player killer's castle with your group of friends or battle out an order v.s. chaos war in the streets of Britain; or even walk into the closest tavern to see other players just sitting around chatting and telling jokes.
Off of the top of my head, MMORPGs that I have played where grinding wasn't the main mechanic were Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Shadowbane, Star Wars Galaxies and Tabula Rasa.
@RoachRush ur gonna wait forever..cause their is none lol...ppl just sad WoW isnt dead and all other OVERHYPED mmos died within the month the released lmao
MMORPG are designed to trap people and create very dangerous addictions. There are people who dont feed or steal their parents money just to play those kind of games, they alse create a lot of antisocial kids just to numer a few problems.
Half life 2 is not design with such perverse objectives, its just an excellent fps.
Why would I be sad WoW isn't dead? What does that have to do with anything? If you want to spend all of your free time obsessing about that carrot at the end of your stick, that is your prerogative. In the time that you have spent on WoW I have probably completed dozens of very enjoyable games.
Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot weren't overhyped. They were the pioneers of the massively multiplayer genre and insanely fun. All of the new MMOs follow the same basic formula that WoW has embraced and it is unfortunate because I feel that ingenuity has taken a back seat to "what clearly works" for the masses.
We will see what sort of success Shroud of the Avatar and Camelot Unchained have.
@eze_sl89 I agree, which is the same reason I hate the free 2 play business model.
@eze_sl89 HL2 is the most crappiest fps ever.
@RoachRush @gnookergi @simsumre Blizzard has every capability to add a graphics option for certain players to enable an "HD Texture pack". People who dont want to upgrade their computer or dont care about graphics can still play the game with the vanilla graphics. Most people who say they dont want to upgrade their computers say they dont care about graphics anyway. so why not have an HD texture pack for people who do?
