I think that real games for mobile phones are , right now , the simple ones - with a simple idea and a simple control . But the FPS ones aren't good right now for phones . The control is bad and graphic quality is very low . The feeling is also zero .But I really enjoy arcade stuff . Way better then on PC . And I have them all the time .
@imprezawrx500 The battery life on the PSP 3000 is 4 HOURS wtf... it takes barely over 4 hours to charge. Dropping a phone will destroy it... broke 2 razrs that way. my DS and PSP have been dropped multiple times on ASPHALT and dont break... they test these things pre production. And yes everything going to phones is a bad thing... mainly it will put off serious gamers (lets be honest which would you rather play on the train,plane, or bus angry birds or MGS peace walker... yes i do understand the price difference).
@analgrin In an ideal world these people will all be reading up on history and politics, looking for ways to improve their grammar and communication and learning valuable information, but in reality they're mostly just looking at porn, moronic video blogs...or checking video game sites. :)
Erm. . . people are staring at their phones all day. . yeah maybe but most phones now have full access to the internet.. . you know that thing that you log onto and has pretty much all the information about any subject you can think of. To say people are staring at their phones all day is to say people are looking at a eternal ocean of knowledge all day. This doesn't sound "uneducated" to me. . .far from it. Also 15-20 years ago the only form of reading available was pretty much books and newspapers and less than half the population looked at either. You say everybody is staring at their phones these days well. . that to me means more people now are reading in some form or another than ever have done before. This can only be a good thing
This is hard to predict. First off, if you think mobile games all suck, you haven't played the good ones. Mobile games threaten the DS and PSP and if you don't believe that then you have your head in the sand. They do not threaten PC and Consoles. The only thing stopping mobile games from completely replacing dedicated handheld gaming devices are the controls. Touch screen controls are way too imprecise. The $40 price tag for new 3DS (and I presume Vita) games is ridiculous but there are many downloadable games available for a few bucks, which negates the cost advantage for mobile games. The real threat to handhelds is that everyone will soon have a smart phone and people will be less likely to want to shell out major dollars for a dedicated handheld gaming device.
iPhone gaming? suuuuuuuck. I'd rather the developers stuck to making great console/PC games and stop looking for the cheap buck. I blame Apple completely for providing non-gamers iPhones and iPads, then telling them they can play games on them too. Give a chimp a gun and you're fine - show him how to shoot people with it and before you know it they've wrecked the place.
The industry really needs to stop comparing the two. Both types of gaming have their place. Neither is in danger of threatening the other for sales. I'm not going to pass up purchasing a game for PS3 in lieu of the latest iPhone game. And the iPhone game is cheap enough that I'll just buy it if I'm interested.
With so many people stooping over their phones all day every day, I think we're looking at a generation of inarticulate, uneducated, squinty-eyed hunch backs.

Big pc and console gamer. I like the serious long lasting games rather then something that will keep me occupied for 20min. I don't wanna play games everywhere I go, just when I'm at home relaxing. Mobile gaming is not for me. I prefer being social when I'm out of the house rather then being in a fantasy everywhere I go.

In order for me to be more excited about mobile gaming, I'm gonna need to see a more solid and widely embraced CONTROL SCHEME, because touch screen controls are far too iffy for serious gaming.
Mobile gaming? Seems a big opportunity is being missed by not having mobile mini-games that enhance the experience of the "full" game on the console. I want to be able to do crafting for example with my SWTOR character from the phone when away from a PC.

Everybody has a cellphone these days...and everybody eventually gets bored. So gaming on the phone is huge and should not go away. It has and serves its place. But will it take over consoles? Hail no! That's like calling for the demise of the console with the invention of the game boy, game gear, gamecom, psp, etc. let's look at numbers that COD is pushing, and Uncharted 3. Skyrim etc. clearly there is still a huge market for console games, and until hand heldls become just as powerful as consoles, and offer the exact same robust features and can hook into your tv whenever you want so you can game on the big screen with PC like graphics, then NO the handheld will not take over consoles. Will it sell more? Of course. Not everybody has a console but everybody and there grandma has a cell phone. It's sheer numbers here folks. If everybody in the world had an Xbox or whatever, when a game came out each time it would sell 20 million plus copies.
I'll always be a fan of console games first.
I am not a huge fan of mobile games because they make you pay a small amount at first and then they ask for even more money if you want to have the full experience of the game. There is so much more to do on a smart phone then just playing lame games, which only serve the purpose of biting time.
I honestly don't like mobile gaming! They are too shallow and feel like a throw away games. Though that's their goal since they are suppose to be one the go and bite sized.
i would usually play mobile games when i am bored with everything else or when i am on the go.
Lots of casual gamers out there.. so it's a win win for the smartphones.

I have an iPad, and the games are absolutely horrible. I cannot play them for more than 10 or 15 minutes. I can sit down with something like Mass Effect or Oblivion for hours on end. However, I do feel they are a threat to the game industry based on sheer amount of potential income that game developers can attain by targeting the mobile market. The money is there because EVERYONE plays games on their phones, but they aren't gamers. They could care less about quality, they just want to feed their ADD by playing mindless games like angry birds. If mobile gaming does eventually win out, I'd like to see something like ultra-mobile powerful gaming laptops with good battery life taking over the console market because god knows cell phone screens are MUCH too small to play anything of value.
I think phone gaming occupies a similar space as browser based flash games do. Phone games fill their consumer's time with a simple or addicting play mechanism without delving into much depth of content or gameplay because their purpose is just to consume time (and blast you with advertisements to garner revenue).
Where as home console gaming and handheld console gaming tend to make you pay a large amount per game up front, and then let you enjoy higher quality/quantity of content and deeper gameplay (thanks to dedicated controls, better optimized development software, and higher development budgets).
The opportunity in this is to get more people playing phone games that desire more depth and quality; this will inflate and saturate the phone game market, and a percentage of phone gamers (small in proportion, but large in absolute numbers) will move to home consoles and handheld consoles.
I'll be fine with mobile gaming taking over as long as companies give more in depth experiences equivilent to Nintendo and Sony. I mean, a short and quick game is fun and a quick change of pace, but the reason I own a handheld console is for the in depth experiences.
Mobile gaming has been around since Game & Watch. What we are witnessing is not the death of the console, but the death of the gameboy-a-like devices, like the DS and PSP. Mobile phones are MP3 players, cameras, pdas and everything else, so why not accept that they will become our primary pocket gaming devices as well?
my opinion is mobile games just don't work what ever the portable device is. Games are for the big screen. I had a psp and never really used it so go rid of it, have looked at mobile games but never really played them, have a few android games but don't really play them unless I have time to kill. I'd rather watch a movie or tv show on my phone than play a game. They make awesome movie watching devices in bed but trying to play a game in bed is to awkward.

Hmm reminds me of the way Sony(i think?) connected their new portable to the PlayStation so you could switch between the two when coming home. But to be honest, i have an Android and only played around with games the first day i got it and then on boring travel rides. But hey, if some people buy the games on that travel ride, then its a market, and where there is a market there is someone ready to make money on it :)

Actually in reality, what will decide the fate of iPhone/ iPod/ iPad mobile game in the video industry is mostly the profit, not quality.
To be quite honest..(with the exceptions of Infinity Blade and Angry Birds) I can't name of one GREAT,new franchise on ios that isn't a copy or imitation of a successful game...the format people claim to be the experiment for creativity shows a surprising lack of such considering 85% of the noteworthy titles are rip-offs of actual games.
Each type of gaming device has it' own importance, mobile will never "kill" console gaming and vice-versa. They're opposites sides of the same coin.
@sonichunter99 psp just never really worked, it's to big to always have with you which defies to point of portable gaming. The thing about mobile games is they will always be with you and you never know when you might need to kill 10 -30 mins. psp has worse bat life than phones takes over 3 times longer to charge, games take for ever to load and once they load you can't just play for 5 mins. portabile gaming devices are very much threatened by phones and that is not a bad thing, once devs put some real effort into smart phone games they could be just as good as what you get on portable game consoles. Things like psp are just to big and fragile, drop a phone it doesn't break but a psp most likely would break and it doesn't fit in your pocket which is one huge problem.
Mobile games will never compete with consoles and pc games but they could become a big threat to hand held devices where you want simple games. ps2 games just didn't really work on psp. psp's on real use was on holidays the games were just to complex and took to long to load to play on the bus or waiting for it. you need games that take less than 30s to load and have short levels so you can play for 5 mins, fighting games, racers and platformers would work perfect. Keep the complex action games for home consoles they never worked on psp so wont work on mobiles. Highend phones have the power to run full 3d games near ps2 level graphics it's just the controls are rather limited. Racers work great but using half the screen to control an action game isn't ideal. As for battery life an average phone can run a game for around 6 hours which is much better than psp, plus phones has a heap of ram, often more than ps3/x360.
This debate is going to go on as long as handheld gaming devices remain around. But each has it's own target audience. Kids who will have handhelds like the 3DS or Vita won't have a high end smart phone that costs $600-800 ---at least normal kids who aren't spoiled. Mobile games still don't have the depth or quality of their console counterparts. At least not yet, but they're getting better. What they offer is good value for the relatively low prices compared to a 3DS or PSP game. But they still haven't solved the problem of the lack of physical controls. I like playing games with buttons, analog sticks and circle pads -- something the 3DS and Vita offer. Like I said; different markets. Also, Laura, you are gorgeous. Like those sexy red fingernails. Please let us see you on camera more often. : )
Yeah, that sums up the main issues with mobile gaming, terrible battery life, touchscreen controls that limit gameplay possibilities on phones and also of course the time people spend playing them it limited. I mean, there is a reason why it's called mobile gaming, u play it on the go on a bus/train/toilet(lol,but true)/whatever or on a trip, gamers aren't gonna play them at home, we have PCs and consoles for our main gaming desires. Therefore, i fail to see the need for so many mobile games that want to be AAA titles, mobile gaming is generally just a time filler. Personally i never buy mobile games, i play the free versions with a few ignorable ads.
The whole problem with mobile gaming and smart phones in general is the battery life sucks pure and simple. Any real game kills your phone in a matter of hours even with all the extra crap turned off.
Yeah I mean mobile will always be crappier then a desktop in terms of horsepower so its comparing 2 different segments of gaming. Putting some AAA title on a mobile phone is stupid because people want fast quick games they can play for 5 minutes at time like angry birds not some epic involving AAA game. Battery life also basically kills real games going mobile so desktop will always reign supreme for real games.
This is like trying to compare bananas with tomatoes. We're talking about different slices of games market. Serious players who enjoy really great sound and graphics would occasionally play a mobile game if they're away from home, but the contrary is more improbable to happen with the minimum frequency to compare.

The future of mobile gaming is the Vita for sure - that's the only portable handheld I'm interested in next year - nothing comes close tbh.
Mobile phone games just can't compete with a dedicated handheld for raw power and anything remotely graphic intensive is gonna eat battery juice rapidly.
Keep phones for making calls and texts and the odd bit of browsing.
There is no future because mobile games continue to suck. Why? The reason is simple. Nobody in the mobile gaming market is ready to shell more than $0-$10 for a game. That's not enough to develop AAA titles like the ones on 3DS or stationary consoles who sell their games for $40-$60.
Mobile gaming doesn't bother me. I think anything that brings more creativity to the industry is fine by me. Also, it's a great place for an upstart game maker to get their foot in the door.
I own an IPhone and play games on it like Dead Space and what not while its pretty cool and all still I have to agree with plenty of people here, mobile gaming has a long way to go to catch up with game dedicated devices.
i wish phone games would back off... i mainly say this because of things like zynga that are money whores. PSP and DS and stuff like that deserve the money they make because they put out quality products and for the most part the 3rd party developers do their part
