The workstation argument sounds fairly logical to me. As with anything having to do with Eastern cultures you have to think about "face" playing a game on PC, your work machine, suggests a lack of interest in your work, bad for your face, not your actual face but your metaphorical one. There might also be a little nationalism tied up in it as well. Still though with Japan you have the issue of the truth that is and the truth you want to believe. The truth that you want to believe is Japanese play console games almost exclusively. The truth that is, is that Japanese play just as many PC games, but they underreport their PC gaming time.

LMFAO! This episode right here just cemented my feelings that this show is the best thing GameSpot has ever created!

This truly is The Soup for gaming and the morons that inhabit the Internet.

Weird, one of the best game I've played this year is Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Collector's Edition, that tramped even The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. And that bloody game is a Japanese Game, from From Software, who made Armored Core: Last Raven, 4 ,For Answers and 5 , one of the best mecha game I ever played(not the shitty Gundam Taisen dipshit), US, for all their mighty machine has yet to produce anything that match the Armored Core series, barring it took me three years to mastered even the most basic fighting move on that infamously hard mecha games. From Software is a company that lead the current RPG, Dark Souls should have won the crown easily, if not compared to Skyrim!

"When the review goes live I'm sure the comments are going to be hilarious." Yes, yes they were. I'm loving this show. Definitely adding it to my list of GS shows to watch (which otherwise is pretty much Escape From Mount Stupid and It Came From XBox Live).

Great show by the way (yours.... and Bug, you know what I mean)

Knowing what I know now, I wish I would of never bothered with consoles (there are the odd exceptions). I also have a inkling (gross understatement) that due to, power, heat & cost. The next wave of consoles will not be on the same level as a £1000 rig made last year.

Then again, this is coming from someone who used to read articles about, console hardware being sold at a loss. Then taking it as gospel, just like the bandwidth costings being the reason for the need for subcriptions.

In short much of what they tell you in consoleland is bulldung, and until you build & maintain a PC. Only then do you get any sort of idea about hardware & software, as you have to learn, and then find developers are telling you bulldung too.  Just to fit the agenda of shareholders, in the lucrative console market.

PC gaming can't be that small in Japan. There are really popular Japanese MMOs that wouldn't have been successful otherwise, like Final Fantasy XI, Monster Hunter Frontier and Dynasty Warriors BB. Phantasy Star Online 2, which has a large Japanese fanbase is only going to be a PC game with certainty at this point. SEGA could have made it a PS3 game if it had no faith in their home market being interested in playing it on PCs.

OMG this might just be the funniest thing I've ever seen on gamespot. One suggestion, when you are narrating the comments with broken english, you should also do the accent that you think they have. That would be outstanding.

I just can`t get used to using a keyboard and mouse,  it`s too inaccurate for games such as Dark Souls where timing of execution is crucial.  Strategy games do work better on PCs though.

PC gaming is expensive but is not that expensive.

A good gaming PC (maxxed one) costs some 1400$.Yep there are alot of people who will say that you may assemble one for much less. But I prefer to buy the best components  in the market so you will not have to worry about any upgrades for next 4 years.  If you buy a 1400$ worth PC and someone tells you that you will have to upgrade it every year, he´s blatantly lying to you.

And that PC will be able to run any game in full hd with all visual effects maxxed.

Before buying a gaming PC you should check the state of concole gaming. It´s very important to know when a new gen starts. Because if you buy a PC which outperforms next gen console 3 times then that PC will last not 4 years I mentioned before but the whole life cycle of the consoles which represents 6-8 years.

Well, and if you had bought a 1400$ PC, I am assure you that, after 5-6years of PC gaming, the next PC will cost you much less money. This is when those best quality components come in. You can reuse many components if those were of good quality. For example, case. If that one was big enough and with a good refregeratiom system then certainly you will not have to buy a new one. Next gen PC components usually generate less heat and consume less power. Power source. 800W is more than enough for incoming years. HD drive. You may reuse them and stack them. Motherboard. Sometimes you just will have to buy a new  processor or a video card. For example, many generations of i7 still use the same same socket. The socket for video cards wasn´t changed for 10 years. You may still connect a new GT680 to a Pentium 4 motherboard.

I really believe there is more than enough space for coexistence of PC and console gaming. Paradoxically the biggest part of recently converted PC gamers are the people who come  from the console gaming.

Actually I took a lot of interest into console gaming after playing a few Japanese games such as Dark Souls and Final Fantasy 6/7. Those game represented a nice change of style for me, a fresh air after playing so many western style RPGs and shooters.

But anyway, the games such as Rome: Total War 2 and Company of Heroes 2 alone makes PC gaming worth it.

To the guy talking about the koreans..... Korea is filled with LAN shops where you just enter, play Starcraft or Diablo 3 and then go home. They don't need to worry about upgrading the PC or if it blows up

when did Trey Parker get on gs !!!

Pc games are 6 years in front of consoles in some way, be it detail, frame rates etc.. but your gonna pay way more upgrading and buying the initial set up. Well you used too some consoles have been way over priced.

I've played both and generally prefer the PC, but I don't think it's an interesting argument. I bought PS3 for Demon Souls and loved that game and series.  PC games can be deeper and more engrossing, but console games can be fun.

About Japan, it's the opposite of Korea. In Korea there are PC rooms everywhere. I went to Tokyo for a week and it was really hard to find a PC room to check email.

moc5

lol.  To sum up... if you are a real gamer that has at least 2 years gaming experience then you already know that PC is the best platform in terms of depth and complexity.  If games is meant to mimic real life even slighly, then the closer to it you get the more PC gamer you will become.  Hands down a no brainer.  Kids dominate the console market for a reason.

I recently tried the combination of a controller, sofa and big screen all console gamers boast about. Everything went well untill I got horrible pains in my back after a few hours. Sorry but nothing beats a table, comfortable chair, mouse/keyboard combination.

There ARE some really great Japanese games for PC. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of publishers crankin'em out.

XSEED and Arc System Works immediately spring to mind. XSEED has brought Chantelise, Recettear and the Ys series to PC in fine form. And Arc System Works has been leaking the Guilty Gear series to PC -a damn good fighting franchise, by the way. But other Japanese publishers need to take some ques from XSEED and ASW.

Capcom WOULD count, but their dlc rackets and steep hardware requirements mirror the worst of western publishers' practices.

@LatinproX although i agree that M+K is inaccurate for some types of games, I don´t think you give a "completely" valid example, let me explain.

Dark Souls, as it is, is a horrible port with horrible controls for M+K. Had the port been done right, I actually think the control scheme with M+K would have been more accurate, sensitive and precise. You could put the auto-targeting (target lock) to rest. Unfortunately, as it is, the M+K controls implemented are just awful, so a gamepad is a must (although there is a mod that tries to adress the K+M problems).

I think that a better example would have been (in a similar genre), the DMC series. Although those games are "doable" with M+K (and I know some good players), the pad just feels more comfortable, easier to adjust and, well... "just right".

Other genres definitely are better with a gamepad. Fighting games, 2d platformers, almost anything with a fixed camera angle/ view, for example. As such, there genres that suit better the M+K scheme, like FPS, strategy sames,  almost anything with a free camera.

@jhonMalcovich  i'd like to see that pc configuration of yours

a 1400 pc is mid level at best let alone a "maxed one". it will not be able to handle max graphic settings in alot of games. or it will just run it super slowly.

any IT person should tell you that 5-6 years is long past time to upgrade a PC. but it is always ok for you to think that you dont want an upgrade and is happy with what you got.

upgrading pc every year is probably over the top but i wouldnt call that blatant lying. i think you dont really know what you are talking about.

@jhonMalcovich What's even better is how much the prices drop on hardware so fast.  That $1400 PC of yours will probably cost less then half in a couple of years.  I'm still using the same gaming PC I made 4 years ago and it still gives plenty of performance in games.

@moc5 I have about 27 years of gaming experience and have owned most major platforms and handhelds since the release of the original NES but have never been interested in PC titles.  FPS, RTS and Point and Click games don't do it for me plus I've always favored gameplay and fun-factor over graphics.

Soundaholic92
Soundaholic92

@moc5 I'm a PC gamer too but I believe there should be as wide a variety of games suitable for as many people possible, and so more depth and complexity doesn't necessarily better. You may prefer it that way but there are tons of people out there who don't

On an unrelated note, if you think that games should mimic real life, then I'd say swinging a Wii controller feels much more natural and "real" than pressing buttons or swiping a mouse. How much a game mimics real life isn't always a suitable measure of how good a game is

Soundaholic92

@jhonMalcovich Haha I think you're just more used to your pc setup :). I used to stay at my sofa for days playing my x360 games

@nate1222 Capcom did a generally decent job with their recent PC ports IMO, at least for the two games I bought (DMC4 and RE5). Hasn't PC support for Guilty Gear ended with Reload? I've been waiting forever for Accent Core to be officially released. Practicing at arcades is too costly

@il_loco2k  @LatinproX Maybe the control sucks on PC, but I really comfortable playing it on a keyboard and mouse surprisingly, cause plug in a Xbox 360 controller on a PC looks redundant, and fuck I already own the Xbox 360 version and probably would not have the chance to get any DLC since I cancelled my subscription.

jhonMalcovich

@AnimeFreaks I made the math with the average price of the components you can get from ebay. Are we talking about single-display pc ? Becuase one 500$ video card + 900$ for the rest of the components is more than enough for a gaming pc for an average gamer. As i already said you can play anything with this configuration in full hd with all visual effects maxxed.

Another issue if you like to make sly or crossfire with two 500$ video cards then the price of your pc will be arround 2000$. But this is excesive power that modern games will not take adavantage of due to they must run on the consoles too. So I think you don´t know what are you talking about.

@Lpedraja2002  @jhonMalcovich The wonders of PC gaming, getting cheaper hardware due to competition, which is a good thing to consumers. I got my Xbox 360 for RM1200 and I still felt cheated and rip by that sleazy retailer.

AnimeFreaks
AnimeFreaks

@jhonMalcovich  my definition of a max gaming pc is purely based on the hardware in market. when i hear maxed pc i expect im getting the best there is.

i do not believe you can get 60 fps with a 1400 setting for the newer games. the system can not doubt run for 4 years but it will not keep up with the new game demands at high setting. the minimum requirements stated on games is as it suggests the absolute minimum requirements. this is so far from requirements

go try running shogun 2 or any other graphics intensive games on full setting, rotate your cameras, run around, tell me you get a smooth operation i wouldnt believe you.

and the fact that you pull various part prices from ebay is a bit...

you cannot reasonably expect average person to piece everything together into a set, order all the different parts, getting them separately in postage, then assesmble every single piece. 1400 is not achievable.

also the part where existing slots can definitely accomodate new parts 6 years down the track is very unrealistic. but it is not a big problem as you should be looking at upgrades or a new system alot sooner.

jhonMalcovich
jhonMalcovich

@AnimeFreaks I don´t know what are you talking about, My definition of maxed gaming is full hd resolution, hd textures, and most of the visual effects on maxed and 60 fps. You can get it for 1400$. And it will last 4 years at least. And this is not an average pc. This is a high-end gaming pc.  That you can boost even further after those 4 years by making Sly or crossfire.

There are not a lot of games on PC who can demand more. With that PC you can run Metro 2033, Witcher 2, Crysis 2 with HR textures, Skyrim with visual mods, Battlefield 3 maxed or almost maxed in full hd. So I don´t know what other games are you talking about. Modern games run on the consoles, and it doesn´t depend on me, it what the market dictates. Did you check the requirements of Assasin Creed 3, Dishonored, BO2 etc ? Thet still require Core2Du, 2gb of RAM and GT570. So yeh, having 2000$ pc is like having a sport car in NY, you still drive 50 miles/hour.

AnimeFreaks
AnimeFreaks

@jhonMalcovich  so you admit 1400 is no where near a "maxed" gaming pc. it is a mid lvl pc for an average gamer.

you can always choose a high setting even on a low end pc except it will not run well. for alot of games and in some high demanding situations a 1400 pc will not be able to run smoothly at max setting. modern games "must" run on the consoles too? you are delusional period.
