Breaking News: The Wii U takes a hit, but is Nintendo really doomed?
Nintendo is going through a rough patch financially, projecting far fewer sales for the Wii U and 3DS than previously expected. GameSpot's editors explore what the company can do to turn things around.

I've supported dropping the game pad for a while now. That blasted thing brings the price up an extra $100, if they were smart they would market it as a separate unit. People will always prefer to buy a separate controller to better their experience then be forced to accept one. I mean look at the people who buy those driving wheels for driving games. they're no needed, but people still buy them.
I also believe its not too late for Nintendo to rename the Wii U, to stop any possible confusion there may be in the market place.
As for the 3DS, I think Nintendo miscalculated on both how many units they would sell, which they still sold a lot, but also on changing their projections for the device. It was one thing to change their 9mil wii u projection, since that was as unrealistic as a cocaine induced last second marriage lasting. They should have never changed the projections for the Wii U, they s*** the bed with that move.
I often hear people say the 2DS was a bad name, but I think it works and there is nothing wrong with it or the name. However, Calling the Wii U the Wii U was the biggest mistake ever. Plus they are barely advertising anything with it, I see 15 PS2 commercials for ever 1 Nintendo and most of those were for Pokémon XY and other 3Ds games.
Its one thing for PlayStation to slap a number on with each new system, and with Xbox even calling their new system the Xbox One it still works because people know the difference thanks to marketing. But slapping a U just does not work.
They should just bite the bullet, and rename the system. Companies change their names all the time, why can't a failing product get a new name and a possible new chance? Namco Bandai is soon to be known as Bandai Namco as it is in Japan, so maybe the Wii U should be known as something new to at least try to save it.
They could call the Wii U the revolution, or heck call it the second revolution.
I'm honestly rather staying with 1990 nintendo, because gaming today means to play stupid, bad shooters or simply games who have nothing but good graphics with enough violence, to create the impression of action and adventure. how can the only real gaming company survive, when gamers prefer good graphics today over the good old high qualitiy series and games like zelda or metroid? what I said doesn't count for all modern games by the way, but at least for many of them.
raider, the wii was also a kind of a "family" console. the same cannot be said of the wiiU, wich is more for gamers. it still hasn't many games but neither have the ps4 or Xbox one many games. and in the last years I got more and more the impression that the ps and xbox have more games, but most of those are mainstream, like boring shooters (cod) or games that are just always the same and don't evolve except for the better graphics. as a long-time gamer I don't care much about graphics or hardware, but about great games. zelda for example, my all-time favourite, is still for true gamers, because it focuses on gameplay, has a decent difficulty and huge game content and even if the graphics are often called childish it's still a good game. I've great hopes for zeldaU because it finally uses mature and realistic graphics again, too. i think the wiiU is a new beginning for nintendo gamers, because it moves already away from the old wii's family console image.
So you're saying that none of the ones I said shouldn't come back? Give me a break. Go back to your shooting gallery and keep shooting stuff with no reason.
You're in luck unless you already suspected that Wii U is doing poorly and Nintendo even realizes this now but not only that the company is struggling.
I went from Nintendo to PlayStation cause of the games. I thought that the Wii was awesome but not enough games that I would want to play so I did not get one. Wii U still don't catch my attention.
Star Fox, Metroid, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Earthbound and other minor franchises aren't big hit sellers like Donkey Kong and etc so they would do some success for Nintendo, but not enough and not everyone wants those games as they aren't popular enough. Many people replied to comments like yours with stronger responses I've seen and will keep getting them.
Mario kart is not a kiddie game if you think all of them are Raider. Actually most Mario games aren't really kiddie ish unlike Mario teaches typing.
@Rhys, games like Metroid, and F-Zero and Mother are not majorly popular franchises and not everyone wants them. Nintendo will rake in decent money from those games but not enough to boost them up since they aren't big hit sellers. Games like Mario, LoZ, Donkey Kong etc are big hitters. I've seen a lot of comments repiled to people wishing for Metroid and other minor titles and they get similar responses but stronger.
One quick point... The Wii-U is the only console capable of 1080P (PS4 is not 1080P it is 1080i.) Although not as powerful the Wii-U is for gamers that enjoy GAMING, not those that enjoy graphics. The games that I have bought for the Wii-U have been some of the best fun I've had gaming in years simply because the Gamepad has evolved gaming (Also note that X1 and PS4 both followed suit with dual screen). All nintendo needs is to bring out a flurry of big title games for the Wii-U. A new Zelda, Metroid, SSB, Mario Party and something that would be huge for them in 2-3 years would be a Pokemon Main series game coming out on both the 3DS and the Wii-U (Obviously different graphics however) And contrary to nintendo saying we've lost a little financially lets not forget that they are still worth more than the entirety of Sony.
no that's a bad idea. if they really want voice acting (i'm not supporting that) then only all other people should speak, but not link. link is meant to connect you with the game, he doesn't speak, so that you can give him your own character and thoughts and identify with him. ;)
I wonder if Zelda will ever have actual voice acting and if it does would it ruin Zelda? To finally hear Link's voice might throw a lot of people off. However, Link never really talks anyway so you do not need a Link voice in there.
that's right, but zelda is anyway better for me and that's why I would let them play zelda at first. zelda is a game for any age in my opinion. I'm myself still a huge fan of the series ;)
Detraction is the best way to advertise something, I would say.
Nintendo must get over their old fashioned ideas, and see beyond the close-minded path they have taken years ago.
Well depending on how old your kids are then they should NOT be playing GTA V cause is not meant for kids to play.
Nintendo's mistake was the Wii U was made to compete with the 360 and ps3 not the ps4 and one. They need to stop making such underpowered consoles and make one that will allow them to have 3rd party games like the new gen consoles.
Plus I do think I will end up buying a Wii U at some stage even before I go and buy myself a PS or Xbox.
I love Nintendo games a lot and still love Mario and Zelda. I mean I am now re playing Twilight Princess and the other day bought myself a 3DS with Mario Land 3D. The last Zelda game was not Skyward sword....... As much as I do like Nintendo stuff I do feel they have trapped themselves a bit with their franchises. They should make something totally new. Yes, still have those Mario games and Zelda games but they shouldn't rely all the time like they do on them. Mario is indeed what makes Nintendo Nintendo and frankly Nintendo is the only real games company out there with it's own unique brand no other company can touch. Just Nintendo feels a bit stuck and stubborn and to be fair for a company that is not a good thing. A company needs to be flexible and to be able to adapt with the times.
well, that's just your opinion. i'm also an adult and I play games like gta or ac, too. but i think zelda and mario are games, you can play at any age. they are really good and entertaining and looking at the puzzles or bossbattles of zelda games, they are even for an adult still difficult. besides I don't really need violence and blood in every game I play and therefore also a wind waker HD can be refreshing. and well, they always remember at those moments of the childhood, of course. if you care about graphics: some games of them are also from the graphics more mature. look for example at twilight princess or the tech-demo of the zelda for wiiU. they are in any case very good games, believe me, and I would rather buy for my children a zelda game than gtaV or something like that.
To turn things around how about making a promise and actually DOING IT. They promised games for all types of gamers, I love all types of games but there isn't a single one for the wiiu I would play for more then 5 minutes. The ones I would play are also going to be on PS4. Heres an idea nintendo how about you start releasing games for the wiiu. You had a year but instead of having games almost done by the time the console released you all stood around with your thumbs up your ass. Thats why you are reporting losses. They might as well recall all unsold WiiUs, bury them and make games like SEGA.
Nintendo seems to refuse to believe or accept that it isn't 1990 anymore. Things are different now. Refusing to adapt is what has brought them to this imperiled state. While the company will always have a group of devoted fans who enjoy good party games (including the annoying sect of this group that cries about their nostalgia 24/7 and loudly hates on everything that isn't nostalgic or a carbon-copy of what they played in the 1990s), a large portion of Nintendo fans have grown tired of seeing the same characters being reused over and over in nigh-identical titles or re-releases.
People are actually pretty tired of Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon, it may be time to let those games rest for a while, and try to think of new, innovative and entertaining IPs. Nintendo's current state has proven that mouth-frothing nostalgia simply won't carry them through the new decade.
I'd just like to see Reggie's annoying smug attitude stripped from him.
No, Reggie, you don't have the best games. You have innumerable, slightly-changed iterations of Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda titles. Throwing in an occasional re-release of Metroid and Animal Crossing doesn't change that.
And Mr Pokémon FYI since 1996 there have been 71 yes 71 related Pokémon games relased and more on the way.
Bayonetta 2 is a game that I want but will NOT get a Wii U for it. So I pass on it and FYI I still have original Nintendo with Super Mario Brothers game and yes it still works.
I like Zelda and Mario games but those are kids games that I got tired of playing a long time ago. Yes I still play video games but is not Nintendo games. Not even my kids wanted a Wii U cause they said the games look like they are made for little kids. That's why no GTA V for Wii U and others games are not been made for them.
They need a lot of work and make bussiness. First; First party. Where's Star Fox; Metroid; Kid Icarus; F-Zero; Earthbound... I mean, they left'em die by time and people are forgetting them. Third Party: Don't fight on games like GTA; BF; CoD, ect... You guys don't need that. You guys need to explain to all that the Wii U is different and good for different games. Look at the Wonderful 101, that game is creative; fun and different. Maybe you're trying to approach the NA market with violence and gore like they always do but don't do it. Nintendo has a great console and I hope they get healthy soon. Waiting for Smash and Mario Kart 8:)
Dude what are you talking about? they don't release these games every year? a Zelda game comes out typically every 3 years and the same goes for a main Mario game. Metroid? hell we haven't seen one of those in a long time, last one was Other M so idk what you're on about really. Fact is all companies will keep releasing the same franchises if they're popular and as it stands now they are so if you don't like em don't play em problem solved.
Don't try talking to the fanboys telling them of this dismal situation like i just did because they'll just bawwlock you :P Seriously though as a Nintendo fan myself they should just stick to handheld gaming, that's what they're good at and IMO i don't think Smash Bros, Donkey Kong etc coming out this year is going to be enough however if things do somehow pick up i'll be VERY surprised, we shall see.
There are some higher ups that need fired from this business. Satoru Iwata is the first that needs to go. I'm sorry, but the reason why Nintendo is doing so poorly with the Wii U is because they're acting like it's still 1990. They're giving us a system that really is only good for playing games locally. They need to get with the times and focus on online components The entire Nintendo Online infrastructure needs revamped and unified across all platforms. Make all purchases across Wii, Wii U, 3DS, and DS accessible from the same account. The store front needs to be organized by categories and straightened out, it's too hard to find things right now. Make DLC acessible from all accounts on the same system. These are things that have become staples of home consoles this past generation. I'm sorry, but Nintendo needs to learn that you have to roll with the times. It can't be 1990 forever.
I think they are missing some new IPs... Nintendo is special and they should stay that way. I don't want another 3rd party games console; we have the xbox and playstation for that... Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong... We need new stuff! I have both WiiU and PS4 and 100% if a game is on PS4, I won't get for WiiU...
All they need to do is continue to release quality games like they are doing and not listen to bs game sites choose to report on. The wii u is a great system and every one who is a real fan of gaming will having one down the road. Honestly the way people go on you would think the wii u had only sold 2 units but it has sold over 3.91 million. I would like to hear the latest figure as 3.91 million is not only a lot but it is an old figure now. I did not have wii u when that figure came out and now i do.
Nintendo has made a living on gimmicks and Mario. A console that doesn't even play dvd's for god sakes. Looks like it's catching up to them. I loved Nintendo years ago. I stopped when the gamecube came out. They need to figure it out fast.
you're obviously a sony fanboy, nothing else and with no clue of other consoles and games. before albw the last zelda game was skyward sword. that was 3 years ago!! and those games are still innovative and have a high quality. so how can you dare to compare such masterpieces like zelda with cod.
I definitely agree with releasing some of those other beloved franchises like Metroid which is my favorite. Problem is, i don't think it will do anything to help the WiiU at this point? I really believe if Nintendo stays in the console business, they need to take big leaps forward. This "kindle fire" controller the WiiU has is cute, and fun to play with. But ultimately its still just a pad with two analogs, triggers and face buttons. When playing the WiiU, i still find myself using the commando pro controller because it feels the most natural.Nintendo needs to embrace current stardards of gaming if they're going to make it in todays console market I believe. Much as i hate to say this, they need the COD's, the Battlefield's aswell as their own signature franchises. And they need the online to be as affective as its competitors. Hate saying it, but looking at the bigger picture here. Can't over look the social aspects that Sony & Microsoft offer aswell. Nintendo needs to get serious if they want to compete. I can sit for days playing a corky indie game on Playstation and be happier then a pig in mud. I'm easy to please. Lol... But that's not going to move consoles. Look at Microsoft, they pissed off and alienated the world at E3 and even lost customers including myself. However, it still sold millions quickly because what it still offers. Certainly not launch titles that moved consoles. Lol.. Its the power of the systems, the online, all the lastest nuts and bolts current technology offers. If Nintendo can't can't do that, then stick to the handheld market. Its a much easier and safer market to dominate in. Even with smart phones and tablets.
well, m$ and sony sold that in a month
look, you can't sell a games console and not have games, which is exactly what they have tried to do
it was always going to fail because of that
2 or 3 good games a year is not on!
