An Evening with Gearbox Software: Part 2
In Part 2, Gearbox discuss how the change in art influenced everything about Borderlands as a franchise, and how the DLC for first game helped shape the direction for Borderlands 2!

This series of interviews seem more like behind the scenes or for people interested, inside the industry already. Bitching about other Gearbox products seems pointless.
To those crying about why Gearbox and Gamespot have not yet done an interview about ACM.
Maybe it's because ACM was so poorly received? That would be a short interview; "yeah, we know you all think it sucked. We know about all the things you thought made it suck. We've learned our lesson in not outsourcing assets, and not making late minute changes, and not showing you previews of the game's progress. We'll try to do better next time." The end.
No one want's to watch an interview by a developer droning on about a miserably failed game everyone hates. I fail to understand how that would be a good thing for everyone involved from a business, professional, or personal aspect.
And, how many times does someone have to be stung before they stop grabbing at wasps? This is the very reason I would NEVER pre-order a game, even if it was HL3 from Valve, who I love. Even if someday I lost my mind and did pre-order a game, and it ended up as disappointing, I wouldn't act like the developer came in my home and killed my life long favorite pet, like many of you here. My goodness.
With that said, I love BL, BL2, and their DLC's. Keep it up Gearbox. I can't wait for what you have in store continuing on with this series.
Very interesting! I love Borderlands 2, but never played the first game. And I couldn't care less about A:CM. Borderlands 2 is amazing.
Hey guys...regarding your the Aliens game...I pre-ordered that one. Can I have my money back. The game was terrible....I will certainly be interested in your next game release and will believe everything you say.....
Buh, still no interview about A:CM ? Both, Gamespot and Gearbox failing hard. No respect for both, useless video.
Lost so much respect and interest in this company after Aliens Colonial Marines. Boo to you sir no amount of Boringlands can make me forget that enormous dump you guys took on a much beloved franchise.
shit no matter what game they make going forward in the future don't belive anything from gearbox after the aliens game where they lied and act like they did nothing wrong bye showing us false gameplay videos that where never in the game and hearing that liar pitchford for years tell us that aliens marines was going to be the greatest thing since slice bread to find out after the release of the game that it was out sourced to anthore game company but lied to us and mislead us right up to release date of aliens that they where 100% in to making the game such complete bullshit by gearbox
Not taking any of their other screwups and what not into account, I find it very interesting to hear them talk about their development process of the Borderlands games, which are two of my favorite games this generation.
People were lied too and paid for it of course they are still angry. These were supposed to be guys we could trust, one of the "For the gamers" developers.
The fact that Randy didn't own up to it either once he was called out on it makes things even worse. And when he responded to the criticism he acted like a smug brat on the playground who believes he can do no wrong.
@NbAlIvEr10000 Yeah, if your point of origin is 4 years ago.
@wEEman33_IV Were you impatient enough to not wait two days for the reviews to come out before buying it?? Because then you would have found out how much it sucked and you wouldn't have had to waste any money on it.
@wEEman33_IV When you grow up and see the world for what it is, you're going to be angry all the time. Get over it.
@wEEman33_IV that's right
Maybe now you have learned your lesson.....Pre orders are ALWAYS a gamble. What did they lie about? You do know what work in progress means right? It means anything can change. ANYTHING. Even graphic fidelity.
I don't pre-order anymore unless I have beta tested the game and actually played some of it to know. :)
@comb5 @Tychobrahi Calm your tits. When I read An Evening with Gearbox Software Part 2 I'm hoping they're going to at least talk about other games and not just blabber about the same shit twice. I get it. Borderlands put them on the map, made them good money etc. but come on man, this one trick pony shit is annoying.
@chaosbrigade @comb5 @Tychobrahi Sadly my friendly Panda, you're not gonna get any. If they haven't done it by now, they're not gonna do it at all. I remember the first time I saw the trailer and the vertical slice of the game. Yes, that vertical slice where everything looked awesome and went back and played AVP 2 just for nostalgia sake. Sadly, I was left more satisfied by my nostalgia.
I for one will be viewing all their future projects through the eye of a looking glass and discredit all the hype until then.
@comb5 @Tychobrahi There's no way you can do an interview with Gearbox now without mentioning the giant elephant in the room, especially when the largest flop of this generation that was Aliens CM is still pretty fresh in everybody's mind.
People are still extremely pissed about Gearbox's very shady and dubious practices of game-demo switcheroo, outsouring the game to another developer, making empty promises, etc. Oh, and ruining one of the greatest movie franchises of all time. We probably won't be seeing another alien game for another decade.
Can you actually blame people for still being angry? Some kind of apology or explanation from Gearbox on the whole notorious scandal would be nice.
@comb5 @TychobrahiI had the game pre-ordered waiting for my 100 bucks to be cashed in for a great collectors edition but then I started to notice the embargo on the game wasn't lifted until the day of which was a sleazy move on their behalf and then I started to see the hamster wheel turning and before you know it I've changed my pre-order to Last Of Us.
@comb5 @Tychobrahi Lol. You're just talking to a rational gamer.
I always look at companies who understand their expectations full well before tackling a project. They acquired the aliens license in 2006-07 just around when Borderlands went into early development. I know that it would have been to their own detriment to release an Aliens game during then because they were creating this happy accident that would spawn a great level of fans and general appreciation for RPG shooters especially on the consoles. Now since then they've had plenty of time to churn a great Aliens game, whether it be pushing UT3 to its max to or really working hard on a strong story and gameplay mechanics for 5 freaking years. Instead somewhere they decided to make this sequel which was easy peasy considering they already had much of the assets and all they had to do with put a creative bunch of new features and characters. That took up their time and got them the result while what looked like an half abandoned Aliens project moved over to Time Gate for completion.
In the meantime Randy "The Hype" Pitchford went parading around all sorts of amazing things for fans that really wanted to see through their beloved franchise.
And then everything goes downhill. They don't even acknowledge their mistakes, in fact they do the opposite of that and stick with their broken game and get pandered by critics and fans all over and are now in hot water because it's the whole boy who cried wolf syndrome. No one believes them anymore.
A pretty adequate response to a studio that decided to take on a mammoth of a project like Aliens knowing full well at some point they'll be making a sequel to Borderlands.
@Tychobrahi I agree with that as well. And I can see how people feel betrayed by them. I do think they deserve some slack for Duke Nuke 'Em however, as it was almost complete by the time they got their hands on it.
The development for Aliens on the other hand was a borderline conspiracy. I worry though that if they had put more effort into Aliens, BL2 wouldn't have been as great as it is. Or they would of had to at least delay BL2 for a few months.
Pre ordering is a risky game and lots of people get screwed by it. I for one was beyond disappointed when I only had 8 hours of playtime on Bioshock Infinite and the credits started rolling.
Idk if you ever visit the official forums for Borderlands, but there are tons of people on there who have said that BL3 will not be a day one purchase for them. If they keep only releasing one great game every three years they'll definitely start running into some trouble.
This conversation is way to rational, am I still really on the internet?
@comb5 @Tychobrahi Good analogy but studios today are all about making great Ruebens and Milkshakes and Bon Bons in the same shop. If they suck at either of those, they try on a new tasty treat to attract the crowd. Not make an even tastier Rueben because everyone knows they can do that well.
Now when I'm paying 60 bucks of my hard earned money I expect a really good packaged product and not a poorly executed game that under utilized THE franchise that influenced every game developer who ever wanted to make a shooter. I saw the love and respect they had for CM but they got greedy somewhere along the way in making a sequel to their LATEST GREATEST money maker ALA Borderlands.
Also a company, any company accepts its wins and losses with grace. They haven't done that once to my knowledge. So yeah, it irks me that all they do is talk about Borderlands. It makes me ever more cautious about anything they ever do again that isn't Borderlands because at the end of the day I look for variety in my sandwiches. Even a very tasty Reuben doesn't quite cut it over a period.
A studio isn't just build on one great game. They have to creatively push themselves with new projects and make sure they execute it with near precision to keep up with the growing trends of the next generation of games.
@Tychobrahi I play a decent variety of games. The rest of my favorites list would be Metroid Prime, Kirby 64, FF Tactics Advanced, Half-Life 2, and Kingdom Hearts. I just really enjoy the hybrid gameplay the BL offers.
Imagine a restaurant that has the best rueben sandwhich you've ever tasted, but the worst milkshakes in the world. If you want a damn good rueben, you're gonna go eat there. If you want a tasty milkshake you already know you're better off going somewhere else.
Why is everyone so offended by the crap games Gearbox has made? There are plenty of other games to be playing that are more worth your time. No need to get so hung up on the bad ones.
@comb5 @Tychobrahi Yikes. Have you seen their other specials? Did you watch the Ken Levine interview? He talked about more than just Bioshock even though that's their biggest selling franchise. The idea with these indepth interviews is to show the company as a whole, not to take one aspect of their success and dissect it.
The fact that you're okay with them just making Borderlands games tells me the kind of gamer you are. But that's your interest and I respect that. Just know that eventually people will expect more from them and given their track record it's a sink or swim situation.
@Tychobrahi But every link to this video has the word Borderlands in it. That's how gamespot has been advertising it this past week. I never expected them to talk about anything else. BL1 and 2 are two of my all time favorite games. The fact that everything else Gearbox works on sucks horribly doesn't really bother me.
