I like what I have seen about Spec Ops so far . I like the idea of showing the horrors of war and what it can do to those caught in the middle.
Number of things put this game way down on my list of "wants". One, 3rd person shooter. It is 2012 and we are still gettting 3rd person shooters? Ok, so some people like them....but not me. Two, quality of the vids I have been seeing looks nothing like many of the "current" shooters that have come out recently. Of course, there are still people that can not (or won't?) upgrade their PC (console don't count) that can only play this "low-ball" game. Sorry, but this game looks a little too much like Mercenary 2 for me to get into it at this point. Let me know how it turns out.
@nintendo_warrio Well, the only one I won't be able to play is 4 because I lack a PS3 but I'll definitely play the first three. The HD collection came out last year, right?
@nintendo_warrio: I understand what you mean....there have been such a decline in the number of fans in recent times for MGS....people aren't really understanding the brilliance and impact the game and it's story has had in the gaming industry....it might be confusing for newcomers but all in all it's one of the best game storylines i've ever experienced....it truly has changed me.... "I'm No Hero....Never Was...Never WIll Be"
@Mariner32: I cannot stress how wrong "so many people" are. The series is the complete opposite of CoD. MGS tackles so many deep themes, and of of its main themes is the anti-war one. It's stupidly obvious how anti-war it is, especially MGS4, yet, apparently, people can still ignore it. Most MGS fans are known to be ignorant, which deeply frustrates Hideo Kojima. If you research his relationship with his fanbase and the series, you'll see that he didn't want to make anymore MGSs because he was very frustrated at how people ignored what he meant with the game. Many people complained about how there was way too much story in the game, when there should be more action. It got to the point that there were "fans" sending him death threats in case he didn't make sequels. I could keep talking about the true meaning of the series, but it would be preferable if you would experience yourself. MGS goes way beyond the anti-war theme, it is a series that had a deep impact on me, and made me change the way I think. I really do hope you manage to play the series and see its brilliance.
@nintendo_warrio I've heard of it of course, but I've never played it. I always just assumed it was a 3rd person CoD from how so many people talk about it. If it brings to light the horror of war instead of the glory then I might have to check it out.
@Mariner32: Ever heard of this little series called Metal Gear Solid? It's saddening that MGS is so famous, yet so little people actually care about what it's about while most just play it to shoot dudes.
Sounds like what the FPS genre needs, a little innovation. Don't worry twitchers, there will still be plenty of meaningless turkey shoots on rails for you to play.
THIS looks good. Narrative instead of blind nonsense action, story instead of stupidity. Games should not be "epic" all the time (actually I'm tired of the word "epic" in games since it normally means senseless). This game tells a story and uses war in a post-catastrophic Dubai as the setup (not the other way around) and that is a nice try. Even if it's not innovative in any sense, even if it doesn't have the biggest enemies, even if the Universe is not at stake, THIS might end up being a good game.
I like what I've seen of this game so far. I don't really know any other game that takes this approach to war. To quote William Tecumseh Sherman, "War is Hell". It's not supposed to be fun.
@MJ12-Conspiracy It plays more like SOCOM or Ghost Recon, based off of the demos I've seen... but even then, I see nothing wrong with it. It looks fine. Games are allowed to be "O.K" too, you know that right? A game doesn't have to either be pure gold or absolute crap. From a person who knows a bad game when they see them, this looks decent. The last REALLY GOOD R6 was Black Arrow, and even though Vegas is good, it's not nearly AS good. Delta Force is a classic and it's pretty unfair to say it's a clone even though SO:TL is a 3rd person shooter and not 1st. At least R6:Vegas had 3rd person elements. That's like saying Halo is a clone of Starcraft. One of the rules of gaming comes with knowing NOTHING now a days is original. Name any modern game and someone can tell you what came before it. It may not be an "advancement in gaming for all time", but it doesn't have to. If it's fun and enjoyable, then let it. Acting pessimistic and claiming your opinion as factual is just... well, stupid. Though I will admit, the other Spec Ops are well... crap, but at least give this game a chance.
@liam72 I'd still rather see any war movie or war documentary than play this, I stand by what I say. This series is just a rip of Rainbow 6 and Delta Force and done very badly I might add.
@zipperflipper I meant the original games, they came out at around the same time the first 2 Rainbow 6 games came out.
God I hope this turns out to be good. It has so much potential to give players a more rewarding if not simply a thought provoking experience that almost all modern video games lack, especially on the FPS market.
I'm really looking forward to it. This, The Darkness 2, Syndicate, and Binary Domain are the ones to watch. I know they're all shooters, but they all have one thing in common: an interesting premise. Can't wait.
This video just got me interested, I'm look for something new in the shooter genre, its time for someone to shake up the genre again like cod4 or halo 1. I know those are 1st person shooters but shooters period and I think that 3rd person shooters are kind of underrated for what they are but they are just as good as any first person shooter.
This is kind of reminding me of Rainbow Six: Patriot's approach. I really like it. It's certainly more interesting than the boring as hell, generic, Michael Bay approach most third person shooters take now (*Cough*Gears of War*Cough*), as well as shooters in general (*Cough*Modern Warfare*Cough*). Sorry, about that, I was just clearing out the garbage from my throat. This game looks good, I might just have to make a purchase.
Hey, give it a break. They are at least TRYING to be different from other shooters. Call of Duty can't say that much.
@MJ12-Conspiracy Not to seem rude but this is nothing like rainbow 6 if anything its more like Graw (and not the older ghost games) but what you said was cool too i guess
like the same story mechanics "The Witcher 2" used but as an FPS? it's either sink or swim but sounds so cool so far
Colonel John Conrad. Great Nod to the Author of Heart of Darkness. Im so glad they taught me that book inside out in high school. Fantastic Novella
@MJ12-Conspiracy "Blurring the lines of morality is better done in a film" Cinema is a more mature medium. It has done pretty much everything better in terms of content VS form. Is that a good reason to ask games to do the least possible? Because better has been done before? Video games are rapidly changing and maybe Spec Ops: The Line will participate in changing the expectations for video games.
this sounds amazing. All games should have choice in the narrative and actually take advantage of the medium. I hope it turns out well.
The original Spec Ops games were kinda labeled the poor man's Rainbow 6 but that's really being nice, they weren't good games just budget priced games to cash in on the success of Rainbow 6 and Delta Force. Blurring the lines of morality is better done in a film, I've never seen it done well in a shooter... No, I think this game will live up to it's expectations....A wannabe Rainbow 6 game that pales in comparison.
@realguitarhero5 Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, games that try and make "tough choices" the focal point, rather than just... Having them, and doing them well. I guess this could turn out well, but despite what this guy says in the video, it looks very much like it's all for shock value.
@parrot_of_adun Nowadays, I almost expect an RPG or single player focused game to have blurred morals or force the player to make tough choices. As for shooters, they don't seem to do this well. It seems to be "press A for ______"; press B for ______". But it should no longer be on the back of the box. LAME
I really want this game to succeed in terms of its narrative, but I'm still worried that something will get in the way of this game living up to its hype. Well, we won't know for sure until the game's reviews are in and its available for purchase..
I remember seeing videos of this years ago and was wondering if it got canceled. It's good to see that it's still coming out.
