old school boring and pretentious "RPG"

User Rating: 3 | Venetica PC
Ok, pluses are:

- Sexy female character.
- Action. You deliver melee combos with a small variety of weapons with ease. Feel good stuff.
- Funny story.

Now for the rest.
By topic:

Gameplay mechanics:
- Someone in other reviews mentioned the skill tree works. Really? I built my character for magic, spent all skill points there and what not. Still had to kill the final boss with just the help of the sword. And mind you, you can build however you want, but spells are only usable after you find an optional hard to work for item that actually pumps your mana regeneration, otherwise you can cast maybe a couple of spells, then you're dry. and you haven't even killed one enemy yet.

- So melee combat should be good? Well... Dodging and comboing. That's it. Defense is most of the times useless. See, there's a balance between the weapons. Swords can't block hammers, but are faster. Which means, if you're the one holding the hammer, they can't attack you from the front if you hold a block. But you'll never get a hit.
You'll end up doing the same slash and roll for every enemy. Each and everyone of them.

- Items, the typical ignorable system. Loads of gold and items that you won't ever use, much less need.

On to another topic: Story and whatnot.
I can see how people like the "mood" wheel for Mass Effect and this new superficial trend followers; it saves you from making decisions such as this dialogue system, where every choice is clichéd and corny. 2D characters that you could find anywhere else find a way to get together in the same game.

The most complex character would be Scarlett. I actually got enthusiastic at first at the sheer idiocy of a beautiful woman in a torn-up dress defeating an army of assassins with a fireplace tool, only to have her fully armored boyfriend die in her arms.
But then, shower her with even more ridiculous notions, alternate her persona from the naive little village girl, to the merciless daughter of Death or even the master diplomat, and it's over. I can't even find it funny anymore.

A topic I would never think of approaching on games would be the cinematography, which probably has another name. However, in this game, it's on par with the story. So pretentious it's funny.
Every scenario change is a queue for a whole epic entrance. God, when she finally manages to paddle her way to Venice. The glory in her eyes. The wind on her hair. Precious.
And meeting her dead lover in the twilight world? Make a 360 degree camera rotation on them hugging, on the exact same five or six cutscenes for it. I swear I was hoping for them to realize they'd been doing the same thing and just wish one of them truly died.

Anyway, if you've read this far, I congratulate you.
Only felt the need to write it as there were too many positive reviews. And seriously, if you like this game that much, I should either envy you 'cause you still have to play all the other ones that are better than this, or pity your inability to appreciate a complex story and gameplay system.

In the end: 3/10 goes for the whole "indie" company effort.
