Vampires vs. Zombies

Once again the zombie sub genre hasn't ran out of steam. I'll admit I can be a sucker for both the shmup (shoot em up) and even the run and gun subgenres sometimes, what can I say I crave shooting things most of the time (in video games mind you). This is an under the radar gem that I had a lot of fun with and is another soild and bizzare entry for a under practiced run and gun subgenre for the Wiiware.

There really isn't much to say, just like in "Little Red Riding Hood Zombie BBQ" (game I reviewed) your fantasy world in invaded by the undead and you have to save it by just shooting the heck out of whatever comes your way. That's all you need to know and that's fine by me these games were never really in it for the story were in it for the action.

The graphics are good nothing mindblowing but good enough to create a bizzare cartoonish fantasy world along with it's characters. The vampire characters you play are nice looking, and the undead characters are threatening and comical. Music is decent, not a soundtrack to listen over and over again but does it's job in moving things.

However it's the gameplay that makes it stand out. The format is similar to "Smash TV" which I'm fine with since that's one of my favorate types run and guns; it's just always so much fun and gratifying trying to overcome the overwhelming odds. There are a decent amount of sub enimies, but I mainly like the bosses their gigantic (they always are), different and their slightly chalanging to beat. I like how the enviorments are designed they are always you best tool for games like this as space runs out real fast. You have a soild variety of weapons, like the typical spread shot, flamethrower, rockets, but my faovorate is the all direction shot which is extreamly useful.

I really love the use of the Wii remote it really works well with this type of game, and is a shame we didn't have any more run and guns for the Wiiware. You can play this game with four people which makes it even more fun, solo is still fun but makes the game just a bit more chalanging though not unbeatable.

What makes the game slightly unique is in it's time and collection system. In the game you not just have to shoot a certain amount of baddies but you also have to collect an amount of crystals at the same time. This I feel gives you a little more to do but also ramps up the suspense as you have to do both things in a certain amount of time, that is if you can survive long enough which makes the game a game of endurance. These things cause you to constantly move, you really can't afford to waste time, sure there are hour glasses that appear every once in a while to buy you time, like I said every once in a while, so don't waste time.

But the game has the same problem as "Little Red Riding Hood Zombie BBQ" it can be a little repetatitve sometimes. Some levels as well as the decent amount of enimies feel just a bit the same, which there could of been a little more variation in both factors. But this is just a minor misfire hardly noticeable and I enough fun to really care.

Overall it's a fun game that like any nice looking crystal is worth a look.
