Like nothing you'll ever play.

1998 was a great year for action gamers, SiN, Half-Life, and Rainbow Six had been released to the public. While Half-Life was generally regarded as the best game of that year, you must take a step back. We are going to look at the REAL best game of 1998.

Unreal.

You've crash landed on a foreign planet, you find the peaceful inhabitants enslaved by a ruthless race or warriors.

Unreal is too date, the most immersive first person shooter ever made. You can go on about Half-Life and Deus Ex until the cows come home, but nothing compares to Unreal. The first level sets the mood for the game, isolation. Your in a prison ship, bodies scattered everywhere and the place is falling apart. You begin thinking this will be the everyday corridor shooter, but you are proven painstakingly wrong when you leave the ship, you emerge into a giant field with rabbits, waterfalls, a beautiful river, and a gargantuan mountain. It becomes apparent, you are in for something completely different.
Unreal works like other shooters yet manages to be different for it's blend of immersive enviorments, strange and innovative weapons, and beautiful art style. Unreal shines with a sleek perfection of Art and direction, boasting a great story told through enviorments.
The level design is another thing to inspire awe, you'll find yourself in a varying degree of locations, from temples, caves, castles, ships, and hidden bases. The game manages to make every level different.
The A.I is the best I've seen in a game to date, my jaw nearly hit the floor the first time an enemy dodged my rocket.
The soundtrack is the most atmospheric soundtrack I've ever heard in a game, the music for each level fits so well it's almost scary.
If I were to make a complaint it would be that there are a few great puzzles scattered throughout, but I feel that more of them would benefit the game greatly.
Unreal is an amazing experience that all FPS fans should feel shame for not playing.
