An Interesting Concept, destroyed by horrible controls and horrible gameplay

Back in the early 90s, fighting games were beginning to phase out the beat um up as the premire genre for multiplayer games. Eventually this period would produce such classic games as Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, and Mortal Kombat. While some of the fighting games from the 90s would go on to bigger and better things, there were a few that stand out as the epitome of what not to do when making a fighting game, and one of them is the SNES verson of the game Ultraman.

On the surface the concept is fairly solid, during the course of the game the player assumes the role of Ultraman, and fight many of the enemies from the Ultraman TV show. The enemies themselves have a decent amount of variety when it come to their apppearence and the graphics of the game are actually fairly decent for the SNES, especally the opening. However the concept, character design, and graphics are the only positive things to be said about this game.

While the concept, graphics, and character design are executed fairly well, the game suffers from two fatal flaws: crippled controls and horrible, repetive game play. The controls are just down right horrible, making it nealry impossible to pull off special movies, and extremely difficult to execute simple moves like punches and kicks. However the worst aspect of this game is it's gameplay. Many of the enemies you fight rarely fight back, and most of the offensive attacks do very little damage to your oponent.

By far the worst aspect of Ultraman's game play is that your oponent doesn't die when his energy bar is drained. Even in a game as poorly made as Shaq Fu, the enemy is defeated when his/her life bar is drained, however with Ultraman, the only way to kill your oponent is to use a special attack when his energy meter reaches a certain level, however your oponent can kill you when your life bar reaches zero.

This is a very rare game, and not in a good way, it's with out adoubt one of the worst fighters ever produced. While it does have some qualities that save it from getting zeroes, the poor controls and horrible gameplay have ruined what could have been a very entertaining fighting game. Unless your a die hard collecter, this game should be avoided at all costs.
