"Twisted Metal" starts to come into its own in this sequel.

User Rating: 8 | Twisted Metal 2 PS5

Positives:

  • Just as much dumb fun packed in here as the first one.
  • Action feels even more compelling than before.
  • Characters feel even more distinctive and interesting this time around.
  • Presentation is much improved with fully voice-acted motion comics.
  • Overall gameplay has been smoothed out exponentially and feels so much better.
  • Level design feels so much more interesting than the first game.
  • Campaign adds a bit of length, but still feels like it begs to be replayed.
  • Multiplayer provides just as many pulpy thrills as before.

Negatives:

  • The controls can still take a bit to get used to.
  • Visually, it's not that much better looking than the first.

Consensus: "Twisted Metal 2" is exactly what a good sequel should be: a game that takes what the first one did and smooths it out, going bigger but also remembering to be better. It polished up many issues of the first game to make for something even more fun to play. In a way, it feels like this is where the series really started to come into its own. No, that doesn't mean it's an absolute masterpiece, but it's a strong step forward that showed how Sony and SingleTrac had plenty of tricks up their sleeves. I'd love for this series to make a comeback.
