User Rating: 6.5 | True Crime: Streets of LA GC
Well, after a long wait, I picked up True Crime and began playing it this afternoon. After about 5 hours of play, I can say... While I enjoy playing the game, It's got a LOT of problems that become frustrating when piled up. The good: I do like the variety in play. doing missions, running around the city (I live in LA so it's interesting) doing general cop stuff, powering up. The bad: 1) The graphics are pretty terrible. If this game had come out on PC, I would have gotten it, but instead I picked up the Gamecube version, and frankly... the characters look alright, but the buildings and streets look like they were programmed for the Playstation 1. Terrible pixellation and low resolution graphics. (for a current system) 2) This is a gripe more than something "bad", but... If they're going to map out Los Angeles, they should at least make some attempt to figure out where things are. The street grid is alright, but... while I don't expect them to get every building correct (that would be impossible), they should at least know where famous commercial districts are (such as in Los Feliz) and have restaurants or shops there instead of row after row of homes. Also, they should be aware of where things are. There are buildings that are blocks away from their Real-life counterparts. 3) The controls are very confusing. There are a lot of them, and I think it shows they tried to do too much at once. Many times I found myself doing something unexpected, even to the point of accidentally shooting civilians when a perp was right in front of me. The targetting system should have been tweaked. 4) TERRIBLE clipping bugs. This is inexcusable for a console game, where you can't patch (like on the PC). Many times I found my character clipping through walls to see generic scenery tiles fill the screen, and twice I ran up to a wall only to go into a limbo where the character was invisible and it stated "Welcome to " Whoops. Overall, a nice attempt. Too bad it needed another 6 months or more to bake.
