User Rating: 9.5 | Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 GC
I used to play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (THPS3) on the computer. A few years ago, a friend told me it was excellent and lent me his disc. It stayed on my desk for many months before I bothered trying it. At first, it was hard and I didn't really get the point. But after a few hours, I really got into it and I was totally hooked, even though I never was interested in skateboarding in any way. A few weeks ago I bought the same game for the Gamecube and I was able to play it with a better controller. Even today, THPS3 still had the same appeal.

Why is it so great?
It's not so much about skateboarding: it's more about the points. The addictive part of the game is to achieve the different goals in each level to either get to the next one or to unlock new material. Some goals need you to perform long combos to be able to score high enough to gain some speed or to get the points you need.

The combos
That really is the challenge of the game. When you start to understand how to score using combos, your relation to the game will change. After a while, you add new tricks to your combos to make them even bigger and get higher scores.

Besides that?
Besides the incredible gameplay mechanics, the environment is well made. The graphics are good, the sound effects are right and the licensed music sets the atmosphere. I like the way the team put a lot of humoristic details into the game.

Bottom line
THPS3 will most likely hook you up for a long time. It has a great replay value, and you can always tweak your own personal skills at the game. Play it for a while and go on youtube to see the amazing moves some people can pull in the game. This game is all about the points, the technique, the humour and, most importantly, the fun.
