Not a Heli lot of fun

User Rating: 6.5 | Tiger-Heli NES
Tiger-Heli is one of those games that it seems like every had as a kid except for me. Maybe it was really cheap, maybe it was a lot of fun to some people. Who knows?

Here is the plot. You are a helicopter, and you have to blow stuff up in an old school shooter kind of way. Your heli can pull of some strange feats too! It can pick up mini-helis, drop bombs that blow up massive areas, and it's the only helicopter ever that can fly backwards. For me, the best part of Tiger Heli is that it's a man's kind of a game! What I mean here is that you aren't just blowing up tanks, planes, and boats. You see houses? BOOM! You see someone's poorly drawn car parked in the driveway? BOOM! You see the exact same car driving down the street? BOOM! That was the most enjoyable part of Tiger-Heli. Unfortunetly that excitement wore off in about two minutes.

Graphically Tiger-Heli looks pretty bad, even for the NES days. The cars look slightly worse than in Ghostbusters, which is bad in itself. Houses look like red squares that you might see if your NES started glitching on you. The enemies and water look fair enough though.

The official Tiger-Heli soundtrack is also poor. The short theme music gets old fast, but if you pick up a "mini-heli" you get a somewhat better, faster paced song.

Control wise everything is fine. Playing these old style shooters on an analog really ruins you for using the d-pad on the old games though. So if you are used to playing shooters on a newer platform you may find this rather daunting at first.

It should be noted that Tiger-Heli is a two player game, though not suprisingly, it is not a co-op game.

Basically, Tiger-Heli is not an awful game, but you are not going to spend that much time with it either. I would recommend spending $3-$7 on this game. Two player games are somewhat desired on the NES, so if you could find this for $3 or under I doubt that you would be disappointed. For a collector, if you could find this for $7 or under in good condition I think it would be worth it also. Tiger-Heli is a nice part of a collection since there aren't that many games that revolve around helicopters. The two player aspect makes it s a little more favorable, and it is a somewhat well known NES title.
