Decent but frustrating old-school platformer

User Rating: 5 | Thundercats DS

"Thundercats" for the Nintendo DS is a video-game based on the recently cancelled cartoon of the same name, itself a reboot of the 1980's series.

The game is surprisingly obsolete in every way : released on a dying system during the 2012 Christmas season, right after the show's demise, it is a surprisingly old school plat-former / beat'em all reminiscent of early 90's efforts like you could play on the SNES or Sega Genesis.

That in itself wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing ; the problem is, it is very average in its execution and would have already been considered average 20 years ago.

The graphics and overall presentation are OK if unspectacular ; the gameplay is decent but a bit rigid, with a limited amount of moves. So far so good ; but the game's biggest shortcoming is its maddeningly frustrating checkpoint system, which often forces you to replay whole sections of the game again and again, because you missed a jump or were killed by a boss. And you will die a lot playing "Thundercats".

Because the game itself is very short, with little replay value save for a few unlockable pictures, it is likely that this broken checkpoint system is just a way to artificially boost the length of the game.

As a result, "Thundercats" is not a game I would recommend, as there are better options on the market for the SNES/Genesis lovers - "Thor" for the Nintendo DS springs to mind. You should especially avoid this game if you want to buy it for children, as the constant dying is sure to get them mad with rage.

Still, it's not an aggressively bad game and could probably be worth getting (at a cheap price) for the "ThunderCats" superfan, as it is very faithful to the show and sporadically entertaining when you're not dying.
